Help ... bit worried about my baby ...

Hello ...
I posted earlier on the feeding thread about DD being a bit under the weather - bit pukey, windy etc today and not particularly happy but I am now a bit worried.

She has been asleep since 7pm (NZ time now 9.50pm) but it has not been her usual 'out cold' sleep. She has been whimpering in her sleep quite a lot. Anyway, I just went to check on her and she had thrown up a bit in her sleep ... not that unusual I know, but the thing is that is isn't milk and is slimey, see through and is streaked with what I can only guess is blood. It was in a patch on the muslin under her cheek ... and dribbling down her cheek.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be ... it seems very strange to me and I am quite worried. She doesn't a temperature ...
What should I do? Is this normal??!!??

If it's slimey could it be phlegm? Has she got a cold. Ds used to be sick with phleg alot especially at night as he was ling down and it collects iyswim. I'm sure you'll get some good advice.

Northerner · 02/04/2004 11:06

How old is your baby ghosty? Are you BF?

toddlerbob · 02/04/2004 11:06

Ring the Healthline Ghosty, Auckland number will be in the phonebook, or ring the Plunket Line. I have no idea, but hope she is okay. Could it be a little nose bleed and some snot coming back up?

Ghosty · 02/04/2004 11:06

Thanks herc ...
She could have a cold as DS is just recovering from one but she has shown no signs ... no runny nose etc ...
But yes, it is slimey ... it is more the blood that I am worried about ....

She's 8 weeks old and fully breast fed ...
I kind of thought that she would be safe from DS' cold but I may be wrong ...

Both my bf babies got colds at a few weeks old although very mildly.

hercules · 02/04/2004 11:09

Sorry, dont know about the blood.

kiwisbird · 02/04/2004 11:10

Ring the docs after hours number for advice, I am long time ago away from NZ but we had after hours number for either A+E (speak to nurse type) or for after hours clinic..
Hope she's ok, most babies will vomit up mucous as it upsets their tummy, but blood isn't usually there... I think I would worry too,

hercules · 02/04/2004 11:10

What tb (omg better say toddlerbob) said about blood sounds likely but iiwy i'd speak to someone for your own peace of mind.

toddlerbob · 02/04/2004 11:12

My brother had this when he was a toddler, but far better to get a doc to confirm this. My dad drove through every red light to get to the hospital.

Ghosty · 02/04/2004 11:14

Thing is, she hasn't had a runny nose or anything and hasn't had any trouble breathing ... which is why I thought she didn't have a cold.

hope you have got to the bottom of this Ghosty. My baby brought up blood when breast fed and it turned out to be due to my cracked nipple and she had been literally sucking up my blood - horrible to think about but better than some medical problem with her. Will be thinking of you and hope that it resolves itself really soon - if you haven?t already done so, please speak to a professional soon and let us know how you get on. Hugs.

Northerner · 02/04/2004 11:17

My ds vomited with bits of blood in at this age, that's why I asked if your dd is breastfed. My nipples were really cracked and sore and he was taking in blood from my nipples, they can't digest it so they bring it up. Not harmful at all to baby but very alarming for Mother. If you are sore it could be this.

Ghosty · 02/04/2004 11:19

I have just spoken to a Plunket Nurse (equivalent of HVs here) and she said that it could be reflux ...
Which I think is a bit weird as DD has had no signs of any reflux at all since she was born and I didn't know that reflux babies brought up blood too ... do they??
Anyway, the nurse didn't really reassure me to be honest ... she said to take DD to the doctor tomorrow if I was still worried ...
I can here DD now, from where I am typing and she is sort of groaning in her sleep ... I went to look at her and there is literally a stream of slime coming out of her mouth ...
No sign of any more blood though ....

toddlerbob · 02/04/2004 11:23

Bloody Plunket nurses and their bloody reflux. The combined wisdom of MN has come up with 2 much more plausible scenarios. Sounds like she is totally guessing. Ring the Healthline, or 24 hour surgery. If they say the same, ask them where the blood is coming from.

StripyMouse · 02/04/2004 11:26

Go to a doctor Ghosty - don?t leave it - so what if they think you are over reacting if it comes to nothing, at least you will have peace of mind. Please go.

kiwisbird · 02/04/2004 11:34

crap answers !!!! Ring a doctor, pays to be sure for your peace of mind
Hugs for the worry
xx

Helsbels · 02/04/2004 11:43

call a doctor or go to childrens a&e room if you are worried - always follow your own instinct where your childs health is concerned and DO NOT be fobbed off with answers that you do not agree with {{{{{}}}}}

Ghosty · 02/04/2004 11:44

Definitely no cracked nipples ... so I know it can't be that ...
She is awake now ... I have fed her a bit but she is not happy, not comfy ... she has obviously got wind as she is farting like a trooper. DH is changing her nappy now and she has just had a coughing fit ... sounds a bit mucousy ... so I reckon it is DS' cold ...
No more blood ... thank goodness ...
Thanks for the advice everyone ... not sure about taking her to the doctor's just yet as she doesn't have a temp ...
I will keep you posted ...

Ghosty, Ds3 had this when a few weeks old(6 months now) and MW/HV/GP, sorry can't remember which, said it was prob left over from birth and as it was his first cold it came up with coughing and running noses. Very scary though. It only happened a few times and his cold contiued as a cold does........i.e, horribly in a baby!

Hope she's okay.

marthamoo · 02/04/2004 12:04

Ghosty, no advice to add but I hope she's OK soon. Oh and sod her not having a temperature, if you are worried, get her to the doctors. (((hugs))) it's horrible when weeny ones are poorly.

CountessDracula · 02/04/2004 12:12

Oh no ghosty, I hope you've managed to sort this out by now - was the blood def streaked in with the vomit - I ask because I found a blood stain on my dd's sheet next to her mouth when she was little and totally freaked, finally I noticed that she had a little spot in her ear and she must have scratched it and it bled (quite a lot!) Knew was that as it had freshish blood caked round it.

Just a suggestion - hope the poor little thing is feeling better soon, nothing worse than a sick tiny baby for driving you out of your mind with worry is there?

hi ghosty hope little one is a little more comfortable, just wanted to add that it may be a good idea to raise the head end of her cot to hopefully ensure that anything that comes up or needs too doesnt settle on her chest or back in her mouth.

Just a couple of books under the head legs are a good idea that i followed religiously with mine.

Hope your feeling more relaxed and little one is better too!

toddlerbob · 02/04/2004 20:37

How is she this morning, Ghosty?
