Thread worms, what to do

DettaJnr · 14/09/2006 10:39

I treated DS, DD1 and DH for thread worms last year when DD2 was about 1mth old. As I was BF I couldn't take any medicine. I appear to still have them . Does anybody know what I can do to get rid of them bearing in mind that I am still BF.

Not sure, but I think they love a sweet diet so maybe stopping all sugary stuff for a few days. Could you call your local herbalist for an alternative (say its for your DS but ask if it covers adults too in case it spread.....just to spare the blushes).

Thanks for the advice, I shall follow it through. I was told by a friend to wash with tea tree oil as that kills the eggs and it seems to help for a while and then they come back... Also, eating garlic is supposed to help but it doesn't agree with my stomach (IBS).

Bumping for you

3littlefrogs · 14/09/2006 14:05

How old is DD2, are you breast feeding exclusively or just a morning and evening feed? If you really need the strong stuff to get rid of the thread worms, could you express and save, then express and discard IYSWIM? You could check with the pharmacist how long the stuff stays in your system and whether that would be feasible. It would be a hassle I know, but if it could be done safely, it might be the solution.

frumpygrumpy · 14/09/2006 20:58

And an evening bump for you!

Blandmum · 14/09/2006 21:03

Make sure that you cut your nails as short as possible.

Everyone in the house wears underpants under their night clothes, changed first thing in the am and immediatly have a shower and wash ano-genital area.

If you can, get your dh/p to change the bed linen...this is because you can inhale the eggs, the microvilli in your respitratory get the eggs out of the respiratory tract and into the digestive tract, where they re-infect you

the tee tree stuff is a load of old toffee, any wash producct will do

DettaJnr · 14/09/2006 21:59

Thanks fumpygrumpy for the bump. Been off line since this morning, DD2 has chest and ear infection and is very 'needy' at present.
3littlefrogs DD2 is just 1yr and with not being well at the moment seems to have gone back to 5 feeds and she'd take more if I let her. She has a dairy problem, not yet confirmed by tests, but has same, but worse, symptoms as DS who has dairy sensitivity... Hence feeding her myself for so long (was only planning 6mnths).
Martianbishop, I didn't realise about inhaling the eggs . Thanks for the advice. I shall get DH to do the bedlinen (only changed at w/end, more washing)and blast the family with some meds! Interesting about tea tree oil. I use it for lots of cleaning (bit of an eco fan).

dettajnr I have taken a med here in denmark called Vanquin that is safe for preg and bf... so maybe check with the pharmacist that there isn't an alternative??

DettaJnr · 14/09/2006 22:29

Thanks for that Vanquin, I shall check it out tomorrow. V grateful for all the support with such an embarrassing issue. I think I'd prefer to have head lice!!!

DettaJnr · 14/09/2006 22:30

Did I say Vanquin? I meant to say Tickle! Oops, it must be the wine...

strict hygiene for 6 weeks will ger rid of them
Much the same dilemma here as I'm pregnant
dd had them really badly itch wise, so have treated dp, ds and dd
But I'm pregnant, I'm not sure I have them ie: no symptoms but am following the heinous hygiene routine including face mask to avoid inhalation, changing all bedding daily. washing hands like no tomorrow.

Tickle · 14/09/2006 22:47

Fraid to say we have had them enough times in this house that I could change my name, lol!

CJinSussex · 14/09/2006 22:48

See your GP - you can have Pripsen on prescription for b/feeding but can't feed milk for 8 hours after taking it so you'll need to stock the fridge with express.

Piffle - you may also be able to use Pripsen after 1st trimester but check with GP. He may have something even better.

Do a spring clean, particularly bedrooms, bathrooms and play areas, after taking the pills, And wash your towels, bedlinen and anything else that's likely to have picked up eggs on the hottest wash possible. It's boring but worth it!

Piffle · 15/09/2006 10:16

I am doing daily sheet washing of all beds, changing pj's underwear 2 x day
washing at 60 and ironing
Hoovering all rooms daily plus damp dusting all surfaces.
Changing towels every day and using clean flannels each time
I've never been so busy!
I'm not bothered about drugs, I'm not suffering any symptoms so it's no bones to me.
DD is shedloads better already, the itching has stopped and she is sleeping well. Phew!

orangeblosson59 · 15/09/2006 15:24

hi in the same boat dd had them on mon night treated tues been boil washing every day bedding, underwear and given everyone separate towels. anti bac wipes, handwash and spray will try anything to get rid of the little wigglers.informed the schoolnext treatment 11 days and countinghot water and a drop of bleach on floors and carpets and damp dusting

DettaJnr · 15/09/2006 21:36

Thanks guys. I assume that I could take the Pripsen once DD2 has had her last feed in the evening as there would be about a 9hr gap before her next feed and therefore no need to express. She is 1yr now so maybe she needs to be dosed as well.

My GP is less than helpful. When we had them last year he just said that I would have to give it up BF for a month! But DD2 was a new baby at the time so I wasn't prepared to do that so I followed a strict hygiene regime instead. This seemed to work, up until now.

When you talk about bedding, I assume that means everything including mattress covers?
