Apparently it's not that uncommon. Does anyone have any experience of this? What about the baby?

Still waiting to hear more news. Not a huge stroke, but not a tiny one either. Her speech has been affected, and some muscle weakness, particularly in her arm.

She's only 31.

Jimjams · 31/03/2004 20:58

A friend of a friend had one. She had a very big one- and it was touch and go for a while- it was her second pregnancy. However she made a full recovery and even went on to have twins. (with a third pregnancy- the 2nd pregnancy didn't survive).

Hope she gets better soon. Must be very scary.

Thanks for all your messages. I love mumsnet

My parents have gone in to see her this evening, so I'm waiting for them to phone with the news.

I don't know anyone who's had a stroke while pg but I do know of some younger stroke patients. Apparently, the lookout for young people is good because it tends to be a one-off event, unlike in an older person when it can be due to furred-up arteries, high BP etc. Thinking of your sis and hoping the news is good, Roisin.

bunny2 · 31/03/2004 21:11

Found it. It was in Woman magazine. A 32 yo woman was 20 wks pg when she had a stroke. It is rare to have one so young, she is recovering now - shall I send you the article? Email me your address and I'll post it tomorrow.

the URL in the mag is www.stroke.org.uk. Must be wrong.

aloha · 31/03/2004 21:12

Roisin, how awful. This sounds dreadfully upsetting. I don't know much about strokes but there's a support/info group at www.stroke.org.uk.

WideWebWitch · 31/03/2004 21:12

No experience but how awful, you must be beside yourself, I hope she's OK.

bunny2 · 31/03/2004 21:13

roisin · 31/03/2004 21:22

Thanks bunny2 - and everyone else for your messages - I'll email you my address now. Would be very grateful to read that article. Thanks.

Dh was on the phone when my mum rang and now her phone is engaged. My sister is improving - speech affected but understandable, right arm very bad.

But she didn't say anything on the message about prognosis for her or the baby.

I've spoken to my mum now, but not much more to report. She's making good progress - is walking; physio starts tomorrow on her arm, which is worst affected at present. They're not giving her any drugs (that might affect the baby).

She's had CT and MRI scans, but these apparently haven't given them anything to go on. My mum didn't know whether there's any risk of her having another one or what the prognosis is for her or the baby.

My brother is a surgeon (so speaks the language) and he's visiting her on Friday. So we may find out more then.

Thanks again everybody for your posts.
