Apparently it's not that uncommon. Does anyone have any experience of this? What about the baby?

Still waiting to hear more news. Not a huge stroke, but not a tiny one either. Her speech has been affected, and some muscle weakness, particularly in her arm.

She's only 31.

So sorry to hear this roisin. Lots of love to you and your sister. Hope she makes a good recovery soon.

Tinker · 31/03/2004 23:15

This sounds terrible, hope she makes a full recovery.

FairyMum · 01/04/2004 07:26

How awful. I hope both your sister and her baby will be fine. Big hugs to you all.

Marina · 01/04/2004 10:15

Roisin, I am so sorry to hear this. Very best wishes to all of your family and hoping for the best of outcomes for your sister and her baby.

WSM · 01/04/2004 10:27

Oh Roisin, how awful. It does sound positive though and so keep thinking good thoughts for her. Hopefully a course of speech therapy and physio will sort out her speech and mobility problems quickly and the prognosis for her should be very good

roisin,

Again I'm sorry I have no experience of this, but just wanted to say that I'm thinking of you all, and I hope everything turns out well. Thankfully she is responding well, so good luck to her and the baby..xxx

Really sorry to hear this roisin - how awful. I hope she recovers soon XXX

so sorry to hear this.

Just to let you know, I have a friend who had a big stroke in her late 30s. She totally lost the power of speech and was paralysed. Within a couple of months she recovered her movement and over a year got back 90% of her speech. She had a high powered job in advertising and was back in work a six months or after her stroke - part time at first.

She lived abroad so we communicated by email only - she didn't like talking on the phone - but from what I hear she has pretty much recovered now speechwise, though still self conscious about it. A non malignant tumour caused the stroke. It was removed and, 5 years on, she has never had another stroke.

sibble · 01/04/2004 19:58

likewise, hope your sister recovers well. Thinking of you and your family.

My sis has been discharged from hospital, and the baby is OK

Frustratingly little information available on possible causes of it, or likelihood of it happening again Apparently there is no preventative treatment they can give her whilst she's pregnant, without risking the baby.

Really pleased your sis and her baby are OK. Moniker x

mears · 02/04/2004 09:40

What awful news roisin - glad to hear she is recovering. I have never come across this so early in pregnancy.

Can she not be started on low dose aspirin? That is used safely in pregnancy for other conditions.

roisin · 02/04/2004 09:49

My bro asked why she wasn't on low dose aspirin ... he's a surgeon and my mum is a bit miffed that they've discharged her before he's had chance to go in and find out 'the full story'. sis and bil seem to know nothing about what she should or shouldn't be doing (other than a bit of physio for her arm). Bil didn't even get to speak to a doctor.

Roisin, how are things going now ?

(formerly WSM)

roisin · 23/06/2004 23:45

Thanks for asking WSM! She's doing really well, and has mostly recovered from the effects of the stroke. She had 20 wk scan today and baby is doing fine. The Drs don't anticipate any probs, or repeat of the stroke.
