Borderline liver function test

Why the test?

It usually means your liver enzymes are raised- this can be due to a virus, medication or long term liver condition.

From right side under rib pain, going through to the back.

I don't understand your post- why did you have the test- assume you mean a blood test?

Do you mean you have had a blood test, are going to have one or have had a scan?

The pain sounds like gallbladder pain to me, and if you have gallbladder problems they can often lead to raised liver enzymes. I'm not medical though, so I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

I've had an ultrasound for gallstones which came back clear.

Any ideas what else it could be?

It does sound gallbladder related.

I had borderline LFTs. My first scan showed no definitive gallstones but the possibility of what they called 'sludge' not sure that's a technical term though.

Eventually turned to full gallstones and I had my gallbladder out but it took a year to get to that.

Did you have your cholesterol checked?

My lft's were raised for almost a yr. dangerously high at some points. Had a hida scan and showed no gallstones but non functioning GB so that was a possibility so even tho you don't have gallstones it might not rule out its GB related. Pain where your describing does sound like it could be GB x

Yes, mine was always within normal ranges.

A friend of mine had inflammation of the gallbladder but never any stones. It just used to swell up and be very painful but was hard to catch on the scans.

how consistent is the pain? Try keeping a food diary and seeing if you have any triggers.

High fat foods - especially cheese were a nightmare for me.

Its pretty much all of the time.

I've got acid reflux too.

Another thing is gurgling, bloating and hiccups.

Have they given you an acid suppressant?

They have but it doesn't make a great deal of difference to the acid.

The other pain isn't affected at all by it.

Have got another ultrasound next week.

My mum has an OP date to remove gallstones. They never showed up in any ultrasound. She had keyhole surgery to find the root cause of her ongoing pain (years) and found the stones that way.

The pain might indicate a problem with your pancreas. Ask about the possibility next time you see your GP.

Will any issue with the pancreas show up on the ultrasound?

Yes, if there's anything out of ordinary it will show up on the CT. I mention it because it's so very often overlooked by GPs.

Its an ultrasound not a CT scan. Don't think those have reached around here!

GP seems determined to diagnose gallstones.

Sorry, goodness knows why I wrote CT! Yes, it should show any alterations (if they're there).

It's today for an abdominal scan..assuming they look everywhere?

an ultrasound will show up gallbladder, gall stones, bile ducts etc. and can show issues with kidneys(kidney stones)/liver etc. however they are quite basic when it comes to scans and they would possibly struggle to see a pancreas with an ultrasound scan due to its position in the body - CT scans will show more and then there are specialist scans like MRCP/HIDA which show organs in detail and if used with contrast can show the organ functioning.

Well there are no gallstones, so back to the drawing board/GP.
