agalch - I'm in west lothian too and I was told by HV that new babies are to get it with their other vaccinations at 12 weeks (or whenever they do the others, can't remember) and that older babies (eg my ds who is 10 months) will get his at 13 months at the same time as his MMR. How's your wee one doing btw?

FillyjonktheFluffy · 07/09/2006 09:05

I've never done anything medical privately.

how do i get a private jab?

dd is 14 months and I suspect they won't roll it out here in time.

Do you know, I've been away for 3 months, but had a bloody dream last night that my 3 yo died of pneumona . (knew MN was the place to look)

Janbo25 · 07/09/2006 09:10

is it possible to find out which areas are rolling the vaccination out??

expatinscotland · 07/09/2006 09:13

Agalch
It's b/c my daughter is 9 months old now. So they didn't have it out when she got her baby vaccines.

Therefore, she's considered a 'catch up'.

Well, I think that's b*llocks. They should make it a priority to get all under 2s done by winter.

So I made a fuss and she's getting it next week.

Over 2s are just left out entirely. Nice. Believe it or not, they, too, can get pneumoccocal disease - and die from it.

You can get Pneumovax privately, however.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 07/09/2006 09:15

ok am clueless fool.

how do i get it privately?

will gp do it and i pay them?

are there special clinics?

expatinscotland · 07/09/2006 09:16

Either your GP will source it for you and you can pay, which is cheaper, but I've never found a GP willing to do this. Or you look up private GPs in your area. Edinburgh has several clinics and BUPA as well.

It ain't cheap, but my child's life is priceless.

littleducks · 07/09/2006 09:18

My dd just finished her 2/3/4 month course of injections with DTaP/IPV/Hib in one leg each time and men C in the other leg each time is sje covered or is this pneumococcal meningitis another type of meningitus? I couldnt find it on nhs immunisation website.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2006 09:19

Little
She will NOT have gotten Prevenar, the vaccine for pneumoccocal disease. She will get it on the 'catch up' programme, probably when she has her MMR.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 07/09/2006 09:20

ta expat.

dd also had the mrg c thing.~

she has mmr today.

will ask clueless fecker of a nurse

(most nurses v nice, this one eegit)

FillyjonktheFluffy · 07/09/2006 09:20

or just listen to wise expat, who does not appear clueless.

littleducks · 07/09/2006 09:30

Thanks expat, i thought she had finished with jabs for a while after 4 months baby ones yesterday so glad i know about this now.

agalch · 07/09/2006 11:53

Hi Mawbroon

Dd is doing great.HV says she will get a jab at 8 12 and 16 weeks along with her other immunisations.

Bloody rubbish that the over 2's won't get it tho.I think i'll look into getting dd1 the jab too.

Expat, good for you making a fuss!! Awful that being concerned means having to make a fuss tho.

chocolatekimmy · 07/09/2006 13:20

You can look all the info up on immunisation.nhs.uk

My 8wk old daughter just had her's yesterday along with tetanus, polio, hib ect and she was fine with no side affects or fever.

I am more worried about the 12 week jabs where they have the MenC as well meaning two jabs in one leg and one in the other!

wheelybug · 07/09/2006 13:24

I think the '2' cut off is based on them being under 2 at the beginning of this september IYSWIM so they will vaccinate any child who was under 2 at 1 September. So if they turn 2 after that and it hasn't been rolled out yet they should still get it on the nhs.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 07/09/2006 15:42

Well dd did NOT get her MMR.

She had possibly a tiny bit of a cold. We are talking fecking snuffling here, bloody nothing, probably just dust.

The nurse said "I can't give her the MMR if she has a temperature.".
I said "Well I don't think she has."
She said "well I need to be sure,"
"Well,", I said, "Why don't you take her termpaerture using that thermometer on your desk and find out."
"Oh, I can't do THAT,", she said. "Oh no. You'd better come back in a few weeks."

Am fecking fuming. Lots of kids we know are unvaccinated and I do not want her catching measles.

She did confirm that a. over 2s are not getting it in Wales because they do not have enough vaccine (ffs, make some more) and b. the MMR now includes the pneumothingy.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2006 15:52

I told them I was taking the bairn back to the US for a couple of months and needed to put her in daycare there.

The jab is mandatory for enrollment in most private daycares and schools in the US, where they've been giving it out for about 5 years.

geogteach · 07/09/2006 16:07

DS is 23 months and had his yestaday

nailpolish · 07/09/2006 16:16

lupo · 07/09/2006 22:47

carolina moon

the link is www.jabs.org.uk please visit this before you give you children the new jabs, my son def wont be having it

morocco · 07/09/2006 22:59

over 2's can have prevenar as well, ds1 had his prevenar shots (2 not 3) aged almost 4 and at 5 will get a booster pneumovax. In France they do the pneumovax at 2 though.
ds1 had quite a red mark on his arm afterwards, I gave him calpol for a couple of days. its supposed to be quite a painful one.
I was falling over myself in gratitude that ds1 was finally able to get his shots but we've had several false alarms over pneumoccocal infections - not nice

CarolinaMoon · 08/09/2006 00:32

Thanks Lupo.

I found this a bit worrying, esp given that my ds already has a theoretical 9 per cent risk of developing type 1 diabetes (dp has it):

'Dr. J. Bart Classen told the FDA that Prevnar "may be seven times as toxic as the hemophilus vaccine, possibly causing an estimated 400 to 700 children to develop insulin dependent diabetes per 100,000 children immunized. These cases of diabetes may not occur until 3.5 to 10 years following immunization."'

FillyjonktheFluffy · 08/09/2006 07:43

ok, well if it helps anyone, I have, after much ringing round, found somewhere in Cardiff that does the pneumovax. it is the independent gps practice in cyncoed (yellow pages) and its costs £40.

izzybiz · 08/09/2006 09:48

Lupo,

I dont wish to start a jabs row, but please have a look at the meningitis research website, under case studies.
There you will se the story of Amyjades daughter,(my niece) Freya.
She died because this jab wasnt available.

My daughter and all her cousins have had this jab, it is a life saver. End of.
