Pain in the upper abdomen

Hello I'm looking for a bit of advice. A couple of nights ago I woke up (early hours of the morning) with pain in the upper abdomen, kind of just under the ribcage and going most of the way across. After 10 mins or so it was so bad I had to get up, by the time I got to the bathroom I was in extreme pain, sweating buckets. At one point very briefly I though I was going to be sick but I wasn't. On the way to the bathroom I managed to take 2 paracetamol. Lying down made the pain a lot worse so I got on my hands and knees until the pain went away. The whole thing lasted around 45 mins from waking up but severe pain was something like 15 mins to half an hour, it was a bit of a blur so cant really remember. I spent the rest of the day feeling quite out of it.

Many years ago I had my gallbladder removed. The pain was exactly the same except I also got it in my back with gallstones and didn't this time. After I had my gallbladder removed it was a few months later when I experienced the exact same pain for one night which was very scary but I had nothing similar since then. I have in the past year been getting very uncomfortable periods which are painful but I'm not sure if that's just a separate issue.

Is it possible that gallstones are forming again? I have looked up ulcers and a variety of things. I do think I have IBS but I'm not sure it was that as the pain was as intense as gallstones.

I was thinking to go for an ultrasound scan. Due to work it would be difficult to fit in but I have found a place not too far away that offers private ultrasounds for the abdomen and pelvis. I'm wondering if I should book myself in for one? I'm quite scared about the pain coming back again. Thank you for taking the time to read, any opinions would be gladly welcomed!

Could it possibly be trapped wind? It sounds trivial, but it can be incredibly painful.

Something with the bile duct? Bilary colic? Or maybe just very bad indigestion/gastroenteritis.

Yes I would get a scan booked if you can.

I agree that trapped wind can be very painful, I get it quite often but this was different. Again with indigestion it isn't something that I find as painful as what I experienced. I would have thought with gastroenteritis it would be more or a crampy feeling or like someone is squeezing your insides, like you get with food poisoning or IBS but this was a lot worse. I appreciate your quick answers!
