Does anyone take a daily vitamin or supplement?

I'm thinking of trying a daily vitamin tablet or several.

I really struggle keeping my iron and vitB12 levels within normal range, the drs just give me iron anyway when it bottoms out.

I was thinking about evening primrose for PMT and something for my joints, I have Hyper Mobility Syndrome so they'll always be bad but I thought there might be something out there that could make them a bit healthier.

So I was wondering if anyone uses daily soup limners and which ones and if they work?

I take vit d, magnesium, flaxseed oil. I'm going to get some vit B complex as well.

Mini05 · 24/05/2014 23:24

I take feraglobin, evening primrose(though have read starflower oil is better,so that next) vit d ( when no sun) b vit complex, zinc, magnesium.

I'd look for a good brand, like solgar, vitabiotics, quest, narrow formulas,
H & B stay away from.

Mini05 · 24/05/2014 23:25

Jarrow formulas

Imnotaslimjim · 24/05/2014 23:28

I take vit D, kelp and evening primrose. I'm looking into something that helps with muscle pain (side effect of low vit D) but haven't got very far yet

MiniTheMinx · 24/05/2014 23:34

My iron and vitB12 levels are always low despite taking ferrous sulphate and Bvits. I also take 1000mg of VitC to help with absorption. I take zinc and some other tablet with sea kelp in it.

TheFarSide · 24/05/2014 23:34

I take a daily multivitamin+mineral supplement - if I miss it for a few days, I start feeling under the weather.

I have also started taking daily cod liver oil tablets which really seems to help with age-related/menopausal aching joints (I am 52).

AnythingNotEverything · 24/05/2014 23:35

Prepregnabcy I took evening primrose oil to balance my hormones and glucosamine to oil my joints. Loved them. EPO may actually have saved my relationship.

butterfliesinmytummy · 24/05/2014 23:36

I take a multivitamin and mineral for women over 40, high potency fish oil and a high dose probiotic.

Cocolepew · 25/05/2014 00:17

Imnotaslimjim, magnesium and calcium will help with muscle pain.

I take vitamin D, vit B6 or complex, magnesium and omega 3 oil capsules daily. I also take glucosamine now and then. Part of this was a way of weaning myself off my ADs about two years ago. I read a lot about anti-inflammatories. I think the VitD helps in the winter and it may be a placebo effect but since taking these tablets in conjunction with running, I feel healthier.

BuzzardBird · 25/05/2014 09:39

What is vit d good for?

OverAndAbove · 25/05/2014 09:48

I take a high-dose EPO (or sometimes starflower) and Feraglobin. Occasionally I take Berocca instead, and echinacea when it's the cold and flu season.

I'm not sure if it's a placebo effect but I've definitely felt less tired since regularly taking Feraglobin. My iron levels have always been on the low side

Cocolepew · 25/05/2014 10:22

Vit d helps, absorbtion of magnesium calcium and iron.
I have Lupus, so need to wear sunblock and stay outfof the sun, therefore don't get vit d from the sun, that's the only reason I take it.

I think it's more important to take minerals and oils. I think a lot of women can be deficient in them.

BuzzardBird · 25/05/2014 10:24

Thank you, that is very helpful.

specialsubject · 25/05/2014 10:36

as you have health problems, go back to the doctor and ask for recommendations for the correct diet and supplements. You may also be able to get the supplements on prescription which could work out cheaper even if you have to pay - a prescription season ticket saves a lot.

don't self-prescribe; at best you are just wasting money.

LadySybilLikesCake · 25/05/2014 10:43

Vitamin D, Magnesium, Calcium and Zinc. I give a little Vitamin D to my nocturnal teenage son and that seems to help as he's no longer sleeping until 1pm, more like 9:30-10am. I have MS so take higher dosages of Vit D than ds (he takes the recommended daily amount).

Mamab33 · 25/05/2014 11:19

Food state supplements are worth looking into. No point taking something if your body can't use it. Magnesium citrate is the most easily absorbed form of Magnesium as I understand it. Good luck finding the right things for you. It can make a huge difference.

I take Pharmanord vit d3 and a Nature's own multivit.

Imnotaslimjim · 25/05/2014 17:00

cocolepew thank you I'll look into them

Titsalinabumsquash · 25/05/2014 17:23

Thanks for so a many replies. I need to see the dr next week so I'll ask then, although I won't get them on prescription because I I have to pay for mine and I imagine it will be more expensive! Smile

Try Boots. The 3 for 2 offer seems to be on a lot. Most people are vitamin D deficient but don't know it, so it's a good one for them to check as it will make loads of difference to how you're feeling.

Titsalinabumsquash · 25/05/2014 17:41

I wouldn't be surprised, I don't get a lot of sun because I get sunstroke stupidly quickly in even shady garden spots so I avoid it like the plague with my factor 50 sunblock and giant floppy hat. Blush

Could be. You can get it from oily fish too. I'm pretty sure that it can help to lighten periods. Mine have been behaving wonderfully since I started taking them (could be a coincidence).

weatherall · 25/05/2014 18:11

I have a drawerful next to my bed!

I take an 'everyday energy' tablet that has b vits, c & d & co enzyme q10.
When menstruating I take iron.
When premenstrual I take epo.
I'm obese so take xls medical (lipobind) and adios.
St. John's wort because I've been feeling low the past few weeks.
An anti acne herbal remedy because my skins a mess recently .
Odourless garlic I've just started for the first time as I know my weight isn't good for my heart.

Selenium and magnesium - tbh I can't remember why but they were recommended to me! (Something to do with energy release/hormone stability??)

meditrina · 25/05/2014 18:25

I take Floradix most days (since my HB reading was once too low to donate). I take a bogstandard multivitamin in winter, and sometimes glucosamine.
