Absolute best sore throat relief?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/04/2014 08:16

I've got a horrible sore throat (and now a stupid little constant cough to go with it). Had it a few days. I'm maxed out on paracetamol and anti-inflammatory. Don't want to take co-codamol as I need my brain to work properly - well as well as it can do after being mostly awake since 3am.

It's been a long time since I've had a proper sore throat and Im sure over the counter stuff must have moved on. What can I take to make things more comfy?

Difflam Spray is great, it numbs your throat :-)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/04/2014 10:31

thank you, I've not tried that one before. Will be sending dh out on a mercy mission I think!

I always gargle with Peroxyl mouthwash as soon as start with sore throat. Within hours the pain goes. I have been using this technique for years and it works every time.
Peroxyl is hydrogen peroxide based and generates litttle oxygen bubbles. We always have a bottle in the cupboard since it is also a good first aid treatment for mouth ulcers and burns ( tend to drink coffee and tea too quickly!).
One of my dental nurses discovered it as a sore throat cure accidently at work when we had a load of samples and she was desperate to ease the pain.

Gargle with soluble aspirin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/04/2014 22:05

That sounds scary willdo!

Is aspirin ok with NSAIDs and paracetamol? It's such an old fashioned thing that I don't tend to think of it nowadays!

I use a local anaesthetic spray. Can't remember the name but most chemists sell it. It tastes foul but numbs the pain.

KatoPotato · 28/04/2014 22:10

Tyrozets lozenges! Anesthetic and antibiotic

Weegiemum · 28/04/2014 22:12

The spray is Chloroseptic, by Vicks. its brilliant, but does make you smell like you've downed a bottle of Brandy (that went down well at the Christmas Eve Crib Service!!)

Merocaine I find good too/

CuntyBunty · 28/04/2014 22:14

I second Tyrozettez.

Cadastre · 28/04/2014 22:18

Manuka honey washed down with a ginger tea. iced if hot is too sore. Never fails!

Longdistance · 28/04/2014 22:21

I second Vicks Chloroseptic. Worked wonders when I had a throat infection.

Ememem84 · 28/04/2014 22:26

Rest. If you can. Hot steamy bath bed hot water bottle hot toddy ( my personal recipe is hot water whiskey ginger lemon honey brown sugar and Ribena tastes foul. But makes me sleep).

Petitgrain · 28/04/2014 22:35

Please don't take aspirin and NSAIDS together!

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2014 22:38

I third Tyrozets - great pain relief from local anaesthetic. They are not antibiotic thought (don't kill bacteria), simply an antiseptic.
You can gargle with a dissolvable anti-inflammatory as long as you then spit the solution out if you've already taken the max dose.
Ice chips/ice lollies to suck on.

Hope you feel better soon we need you to make the weather

thenightsky · 28/04/2014 22:38

Chloraseptic spray is amazing.

magso · 29/04/2014 00:01

Diff ram spray is brilliant! Gargling with soluble painkillers INSTEAD of conventional tablets before swallowing is helpful too. Obviously can't do that yet as you have already taken max doses.
Hope you are on the mend.

Blondieminx · 29/04/2014 00:37

Merocaine have been discontinued Sad

Difflam spray is good.

Weegiemum · 29/04/2014 00:38

phoebeflangey · 29/04/2014 00:43

Had to go to the gp for arthritis. Came out with a shit load of different meds, none of which for my stupid throat (now really really annoying cough) So the pharmacist was very Hmm at my request and gave me bloody linctus. Thought about short circuiting the system and trying a different one for difflam but I didn't have the energy.

I now need something for bad temper. Any recommendations?

I gave in with the cocodamol and it has sorted my sore throat, slowed my cough, helped my arthritic bits and mellowed my grumpiness Grin shame I'm now a bit hopeless for doing anything useful.

My throat is killing me. Jakemans lozenges help quite a lot, especially the black ones. I'd love a codyramol or two if I wasn't pregnant.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/04/2014 14:48

It's really mean when you are pregnant and you can't take proper stuff. I feel for you :(

When I was hospitalised with about 30 throat ulcers, the best pain relief was definitely Votarol - as opposed to any of the codeine based stuff.

But the best short term relief of all, especially before meals, was gargling with soluble aspirin. You don't have to swallow it, just spit it out - but the local relief is immense. It works for about half an hour, so you can actually eat/drink.

Sympathies to all with sore throats - a nurse told me throat pain is especially ouchy because there are a lot of nerves there!
