Becky is 10 months and has the worst nappy rash i have ever seen. Took her to docs on monday with it, prescribed Timodene.

Today it is 10 times worse than it has ever been, she is screaming and crabby and we can hardly settle her. This is not my baby - she is usually so happy and chilled out!

Anything I can do before I tear my hair out and go mad at the docs again tomorrow?!

DS quite often comes back from his dad's with nappy rash and I find that a very liberal covering of Sudocream at night time usually works.

You could boil up some pearl barley, let the water cool and give that to her to drink. It will cleanse her system. Often the urine is so acidic that it does burn, very common when children are teething or poorly. DD had the pearl barley water and it helped her nappy rash no end. (only keep the water for 2 days, it will settle, just shake well)

Make sure that plenty of water is being drunk. Put a couple of handlefuls of oats in a pair of tights or somesuch and put it under the running hot tap when you pour a bath. It works an absolute treat and is also very good for your skin too. Also lots of nappy off time. With my first I covered the base of his travel cot with towells and let him play in there for a while. Much easier for clean ups lol. The egg white trick works a treat too. Just make sure it is dry before putting a nappy on. All cost very little and no horrible chemicals.

I'd also recommend metanium (spelling?)when DD was 10-18 months had several bouts of very bad nappy rash and this worked wonders (was recommended by my HV & DR) normally healed up within 24 hours. Have to put a liberal coat of it onto all affected areas and make sure you have wipes/flannel to wipe your hands on as its very thick and stains so be careful. Hope she feels better soon xx

kamillosan · 26/08/2006 20:10

when i used to look after children with special needs - the miracle cure was metainium mixwith vaseline

keepit cean wipe it down every wee

another thougt is she drinking/eating anything deffernt? she could well have a reaction to it x

Try caneston cream (usually for vaginal thrush ) but if its that bad it could well be thrush. If it is will work really quickly.
Have you tried cotton nappies ?

nappyaddict · 27/08/2006 00:58

have you tried drapolene?

Adorabelle · 27/08/2006 01:30

Get some Metanium, Quickly! It is wonder cream

Papillon · 27/08/2006 06:29

sage, cammomile, calendula all heal, manuka and tea tree

I washed ds in a low bath with him sitting in a mixture of herbs I had boiled. Its much gentler and safer.

Xavielli · 27/08/2006 15:49

Xavi gets the most horrific nappy rash! I have tried everything under the sun to shift it. The only thing that ever works is Oilatum lotion.

Meggymoose · 28/08/2006 09:29

I reallt sympathise. My DD1 used to get so sore that her skin would blister and it was so upsetting whan she was passing urine as she would cry out as i expect the urine was stinging the blisters.

Our GP recommended a thin layer of metanium with vaseline over the top. It worked really well for DD.

ptmum · 28/08/2006 14:35

My ds had the same type of rash last week , i tried the normally wonderous metanium but it did not shift so i took him to the hv and she said it was a fungal infection and to use canestan cream . It worked the rash has gone and my happy boy is back. I would strongly recomend it.

beatie · 29/08/2006 13:31

Metanium didn't work for dd2 who has just had the worst nappy rash I've ever seen - looked a bit like small pox . I feel like a bad mother for not taking her to the doctors as it lasted a few weeks but it didn't appear to be causing her any pain. I was putting Metanium on it, thinking that was the best/strongest stuff and it was only mildly improving.

After reading all the responses on here I realised it could be a fungal infection and I bought a tube of cream in waitrose which has shown a rapid improvement in less than 24 hours. The cream is made by Lane(s?) and it is tea tree and witch hazel. I found it in the regular medicine section but it does say on the cream box that it can be used for nappy rash.

savanna · 29/08/2006 20:23

I have a natural cure that cleared up my son's rash in a couple of days. I think it would breach Mumsnet rules if I posted details of the stuff I used here. Anyone who would like more information can email me at layor9 at yahoo dot com (written this way to foil spammers - please replace 'at' and 'dot' with the usual symbols).

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 29/08/2006 20:25

canestan has worked a treat in about 48 hours.... but now Jess has it!!! Can it be passed by sharing a bath?! I tell ya, im at my wits end with crabby babies!!!

I swear by Kamillosan. I use it at the first sign of redness and we have never had a problem with nappy rash. My american niece suffered very badly- would end up with bleeding sores- and had been prescribed all kinds of things from anti-biotics to anti-fungicides, none of which had stopped the problem. Within 3 days of using Kamillosan her nappy rash had subsided to a bit of redness and within a week had totally gone. The family now use it at the first sign of a red bottom and haven't had a problem with a rash in over 6 months now
