HELP!!! Nappy rash that looks like its burnt!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 24/08/2006 19:00

Becky is 10 months and has the worst nappy rash i have ever seen. Took her to docs on monday with it, prescribed Timodene.

Today it is 10 times worse than it has ever been, she is screaming and crabby and we can hardly settle her. This is not my baby - she is usually so happy and chilled out!

Anything I can do before I tear my hair out and go mad at the docs again tomorrow?!

yes deffo go back to the doctors sounds rather nasty

Papillon · 24/08/2006 19:42

My doctor advised I use Sage when I took my dd. This doctor looks to have diagnosed for a fungal infection (Timodene)

Tee tree is also good

drosophila · 24/08/2006 19:44

DS is allergic to Bannanas and it gives him the runs so it is possible. I would take it out of her diet just to see.

MagicGenie · 24/08/2006 19:46

My DS had fungal nappy infection recently. I asked the pharmasist's advice who recommended Canestan.

I was a bit surprised as I associate Canestan with (ahem!) 'feminine' thrush, but it does say it can be used for fungal nappy rash on the tube.

It worked a treat.

I tried to keep DS's nappy off but he just kept scratching/fiddling and making it worse.

Try to change her as often as poss, as others have said.

Not sure if anyones mentioned this as have not read whole thread, but could it be her teeth? This is a commen indication fo the timely appearence of a tooth!

mimi1uk · 24/08/2006 20:10

yeah sometimes teeth do affect babies bums but this sounds really really sore

??

lilymolly · 24/08/2006 20:14

Just a couple of friends where telling me today their ds bum had blisters on it and was very sore just a few days before they cut a tooth- just a thought, dd has none yet so no personal experience!

another vote for metanium wonder cream ! have used on all mine at one time. All mine had very bad bum rash when they cut a new tooth, and it worked really quickly on clearing it up.

novadandypowder · 25/08/2006 08:53

Make sure you clean with only water and cotton wool, no scented wipes, even Johnsons sensitive are full of rubbish.

Dry with a tissue to make sure all moisture is off the skin.

Then I swear by Neals Yard baby balm to moisturise and protect (is very good for excema too). I use it every nappy change.

Then I put on Neals Yard baby barrier, but don't use too much barrier cream as this can rub off on the nappy preventing it from absorbing moisture and keeping it next to the skin.

I must say, I'm more of a fan of natural methods than strong medicated/steroid creams.

Hope she gets better soon x

yourlittleswampduck · 25/08/2006 09:28

DD had this. She even had open sores on her bottom - it was awful. One night we phoned the NHS Help Line and the Health Care Consultant told me to apply Metanium (from Boots or a Pharmacy. You apply it sparingly so that you can still almost see the colour of the skin through the applied cream to allow the skin to breathe. It worked a treat. A friend of mine also recommended Shea Butter, but we didn't try that as Metanium worked so well. Good luck.

ruty · 25/08/2006 09:46

ds had vicious nappy rash a few months ago and only canestan cleared it up.

Littlemissbusy · 25/08/2006 11:03

Metanium has always worked an absolute treat when my three have had bad nappy rash. It's the best thing ever!

ellasmum1 · 25/08/2006 12:07

Metanium didn't work for my little girl, she used to get a very moist type nappy rash and i always used morhulin cream, its for wounds and nappy rash you can get it at chemists, it has fish oil in and always worked a treat for my dd.
Hope it clears up soon x

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 25/08/2006 12:43

Ive been given canesten from the docs. Says the timodene, because of the steroids etc may have reacted with her skin and to leave it well alone.

She has said to apply the canesten and see how it goes, if no improvement by tuesday to take her back.... again.

Metanium - what is it?

We had one rash to end all rashes with ds. Doc gave us a prescription for something generally called "Happy Hiney". It's something they have to mix up for you at the pharmacy. I believe the proper name is Kirschner's Cream. It is yellowish and kind of gritty. Works like magic!

yourlittleswampduck · 25/08/2006 13:42

Yellow and gariny - sounds liek Metanium too. It's an ointment, in a yellow tube and is an off the shelf product. Check it out on NetDoctor...

Astrophe · 25/08/2006 14:29

we use bepanthen at every change - its very good.
If he gets a rash - fresh air on the bum as he lies on a rug in the garden.
Will try the chamomile tea next time though!

Mirage · 25/08/2006 17:31

chamomile tea worked for use when everything else failed.DD2 had nappy rash so badly that it was bleeding, but after 2 days of using chamomile to wash her with,it vanished.

bubblepop · 25/08/2006 20:27

hiya, i bet theres a tooth on the way! my baby (8 months) has just cut her 1st tooth, we had two weeks of sloppy rancid nappies before it made an appearance!

kooky · 25/08/2006 21:17

my daughter gets a horrible rash every time she cuts a tooth, I use a tiny layer of timodene cream that the GP prescribed at the first sign of it and it disappears really quickly. I also try to avoid it by leaving her nappy off for a couple of hours every day where poss.

PinkTulips · 25/08/2006 22:49

double check it's nothing in her diet as my dd got severe blistered nappy rash that NOTHING could shift at 6 months when cows milk was introduced and it only went away when we realised and stopped using it in her cereal adn stopped trying to wean her onto formula.

when she got it badly a few months back i found tonnes of nappy free time and using a tiny bit of talc to thoroughly dry her skin out at nappy changes before using a good thick layer of vaseline to protect her skin cleared it up when none of the stronger creams or ointments would

DarrellRivers · 26/08/2006 09:30

I swear by metanium cream

first sign of trouble, apply liberally, it's yellow and smells very medicinal.
V V good barrier cream

good luck

muminamini · 26/08/2006 10:30

I have been lucky and my sons nappy rash has always cleared well with a liberal application of sudocreme. I remember one time it was particularly bad my Mum told me to put egg white on it and allow it to dry before putting the nappy back on. It formed like a seal over his bottom and the next day the rash was gone. So would recommend that if nothing else is working.

Hope the bot is better soon - it's such a shame when they are in pain with it.
x

dylansluckymum · 26/08/2006 14:03

truly the best advice i ever got was from an hv to make sure the baby's bum is completely dry before you put a nappy on, especially between the cheeks iykwim. i use the fresh nappy as a fan! if it starts to get a bit red put on loads of vaseline. my ds is 5 months and has only had 1 mild rash... it really works!
