thyroxine and ferrous sulfate.

hashtagwhatever · 08/04/2014 13:18

I have been prescribed thyroxine for hashimoto thyroiditis and am taking ferrous sulfate for chronic low iron, which is still under investigation.

The GP told me to carry on with the iron tablets but I've read a lot of contradictory stuff about taking both.

Will I be okay to do this? And if so are the tablets best spaced out by a few hours.

Tia

Hi, I take thyroxine and iron, but you should take them far apart, I take thyroxine before breakfast, and the iron before bed. Hope that helps.

mummytime · 08/04/2014 14:46

I am on both, as I need quite a lot of iron its complex. I take the Thyroxine first thing, then 1 to 2 hours later I take my first iron, next iron at lunch time and final one with dinner.

Needing iron as well as thyroxine is pretty common.

Quangle · 08/04/2014 14:50

OK I didn't know this and am on both iron supplementation and thyroxine. My doctors are useless. I keep having repeat appointments to find out why my treatments aren't working...perhaps this is why.

hashtagwhatever · 08/04/2014 15:10

Thank you. So as long as the two tablets are spaced it will be fine. I read the leaflet in the thyroxine box and then looked online. Confused me

Can I ask are you all low on iron due to the thyroid problems that you have?

Thanks for starting this thread hashtag. I had no idea thyroid and low iron went together.

mummytime · 08/04/2014 15:22

I think I am mainly, I had a whole range of tests but nothing too wrong (I was offered a hysterectomy if I wanted).

RockinD · 08/04/2014 18:41

Oh yes. Because thyroid causes low stomach acid, which affects absorption, it goes with low iron, vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D and being low in any of those will mean that your thyroxine doesn't work.

Minifingers · 08/04/2014 20:17

I have very very low ferritin levels to go with being hypothyroid. I took ferrous sulphate for months and all it did was give me diarrhoea.

As of 10 days ago my regime is thus: up at six, take thyroxine and drink hot water - no tea or coffee for an hour.

Midday I take a slow release ferroglobin capsule with a slow release vitamin c (for absorption) and again at night. I'm already feeling better and hoping to improve more. The slow release iron also contains vitamin B6 and 12 I think.

Minifingers · 08/04/2014 20:23

these

I know the iron content is a fraction of what you get with ferrous sulphate tabs from the doctor but I'm convinced you absorb more (at least I do because ferrous sulphate gives me a horrible upset stomach.

hashtagwhatever · 08/04/2014 20:41

So it's definitely a thyroid issue.

I was told I tested borderline celiac? Today is my first day of thyroxine and hoping some symptoms go away.

How quickly would you notice an improvement with symptoms. Its been such a slow process as it were already.

OP posts:
ghostinthecanvas · 08/04/2014 20:50

I have the rage. I have been trying for years to get thyroxine because of borderline results. I have been told repeatedly that they want to treat my low iron levels first. So I go on courses of ferrous. .tablets. constant problem with my iron levels. Nothing changes. My quality of life has been seriously impacted. I can sleep 14 and a half hours a day. When I am up and about I cannot complete a task due to lack of concentration. DH has been affected, he is stressed. Very. Worrying about me and running the house. I am now on thyroxine but have been told to take a generic multivitamin with added iron too. Any cheap brand will do. Apparently. Minifingers I will research your combination and maybe try that.

ghostinthecanvas · 08/04/2014 20:52

hashtag apparently thyroxine takes a while to get into your system. Gp doesn't want me back for 3 months.

hashtagwhatever · 08/04/2014 21:09

I feel your pain ghost. I feel so tired that I feel like a zombie on autopilot. Am in pain all of the time.

I also have a awful inner tremor type thing like I can feell the blood travelling around my body (not actually sure that's thyroid related) gets a nod of the head from the drs but nothing else said and actually its a bad description. I find it hard too articulate it.

Flowers Weirdly nice to know I am not alone. I don't know anything about what could cause your tremor. Hopefully someone will listen to you at the gp.

Thank you ghost

hashtag do you feel cold all the time? I only started my thyroxine on the 5th and I don't know if its my imagination but I feel warmer. DH has noticed my feet are not longer instruments of torture (#nevertooldtochaseDHwithcoldfeet!!). Don't know if it's wishful thinking on my part.
Also, never finished yesterdays rant. I meant to say gp never told me to take iron separately from thyroxine. I was planning to take them together.

RockinD · 09/04/2014 10:43

Internal tremor is often a symptom of adrenal fatigue (qv).

Thyroxine does take a while to settl, but when you're looking for the right dose, you should test and re-assess every six weeks. Three months is too long if you're on the wrong dose!

Quangle · 09/04/2014 10:57

ooh internal tremor - can you say more about this? I occasionally get an odd feeling in my throat, like my heart is beating in my throat. I can feel vibrations internally - but in my case just in my throat. Is yours that feeling but all over?

For me it's not nice but it doesn't last long.

ghostinthecanvas · 09/04/2014 11:27

RockinD I did wonder. Things I have read, people taking thyroxine have said 6 weeks. I will call the surgery after 6 weeks for a blood test and appt and just say my test is due. I know others lurk on threads like these, I hope they find it as helpful as this one. Apologies hashtag, I feel I have taken your thread over a bit.

mummytime · 09/04/2014 11:34

I think I was first told about not taking the Iron and Thyroxine together by the Pharmacist, and then read more about it on the internet.

hashtagwhatever · 09/04/2014 12:30

Yes it is similar to my heart beat but to wide spread to be my heart (if that makes sense)

I was told too come back in two weeks one to see whats changed due to thyroxine and two because I think the gp wants to do some more test RE the iron.

Which maybe isn't necessary given you all have low iron too. I am constantly freezing and was told I have raynauds phenomenon. I'm really pale and often mottled too. Get pins and needles in legs and hands.

Its hard to tell what's thyroid related and whats not.

hashtagwhatever · 10/04/2014 13:43

I have another question if anyone is still reading lol.

It's day three only of being on levothyroxine and oddly I feel more tired than ever. Is this usual or actually just me and unrelated.

RockinD · 10/04/2014 18:52
