horrific birth story

A friend of mine's just told me that her sister just gave birth and pushed so hard that her eyeball popped out of its socket and now she's facially quite disfigured and no-one knows if it will ever go back to normal. I've NEVER heard of this happening before, has anyone else? And if so, what's the outlook?

No, I've never heard of it either! How well do you know this friend? It sounds like an urban myth!

Lisa78 · 05/03/2004 21:39

I've heard of eyeballs coming out of the socket - though not thru giving birth. As far as I know, it should be a simple matter to put it back in with no permanent disfigurement but I am no expert

squirmyworm · 05/03/2004 21:41

bluuugh
she said in a mature kind of way

I did hear of someone who broke blood vessels in their eye

Azure · 05/03/2004 21:58

I really wish I hadn't read this. I've got a phobia about eyes. I shall never give birth again.

Evita · 05/03/2004 21:59

I don't know the person that well but she's very straight. And she seems genuinly quite freaked out by what happened to her sister. Apparently she's going to have to have some cosmetic surgery. I told dp about it in bed last night and he told me today he couldn't sleep for thinking about it. When I told him he just repeated 'urg urg urg' over and over while clutching his own eye.

Evita, it does sound like a bit of a myth! When i first read your post though, i wasn't sure if it was a joke with "what's the outlook" at the end!!!

Sorry!

suedonim · 05/03/2004 22:22

Eeeeuw! I've no idea if that can happen or not but someone recently told me that my dog's eyes might pop out! She's a Cavalier KC spaniel, with big round eyes. This person told me that if CKC's pull too hard on their lead it can make their eyes come out of the socket and then they'll have to be removed and she'll be blind.

Seeing as this is our second CKC (she's nearly 10) and there's been no indication ever of any eyeball popping, I don't know why I decided it was worth my while worrying about it, but I did. I'm pathetic......

hercules · 05/03/2004 22:38

I am never ever having another baby.

Lisa78 · 05/03/2004 22:42

Okay, okay, everyone calm down!!!! The eye is very firmly attached by quite thick vessels, it can be popped out of the socket by an eye doctor to about your cheek bone, in order to treat behind it and replaced with no harm done
Its impossible to sneeze with your eyes open to prevent them popping out then, otherwise, I don't think anyone has anything to worry about - and if you are, just close your eyes when you push!
As for your dog, no, her eyes won't pop out, thats a load of old tosh, lots of animals have eyes like that eg birds, horses, to give them enhanced vision
Stern teacher head off now!

Lisa78 · 05/03/2004 22:43

But you shouldn't let her pull too hard on the lead anyway, she'll bruise her neck! If she tugs, stop and say a firm "NO" and stand still until she sits down - do that a few times and she'll soon learn she progresses more slowly if she pulls

suedonim · 05/03/2004 23:44

Thanks, Lisa. In fact, she's rarely on a lead nowadays as she walks (more-or-less) to heel. Any bruising would have to penetrate the fat first! She's overweight and I've bought this bl%dy expensive prescription diet food that the vet recommended but she's lost not an ounce, even though she gets no other food whatsoever. What with that and specialist cat food - honestly, I'm surprised dogs and cats didn't become extinct years ago!

Lisa78 · 05/03/2004 23:53

Thats really annoying! Try another one!

suedonim · 06/03/2004 00:13

I can't - I've got a huge sack of the stuff!! I suppose I could put milk on it and give it to the kids, telling them it's a new cereal.

Ghosty · 06/03/2004 02:48

Well that's another argument pro c/sections then

zebra · 06/03/2004 07:42

It's not the worst story I've heard... the worst one I've heard was 4 epidurals that didn't work, one of which knicked the nerve column and left the poor woman with permanent back tingling, and then doctors wouldn't believe none of the Epis were working so started the C-section while the poor woman could still feel everything.
She was given a General when she started screaming too much.
I think she got hefty compensation afterwards.
Everything is relative...

Evita · 06/03/2004 08:29

Nightmare ...

But seriously I wasn't joking about it, my friend's really concerned about her sister.

Suedonim aaah! I don't like dogs at all but I do like Cavaliers, we had them as children. They're really sweet docile dogs aren't they? (sorry, very off topic everyone!)

WideWebWitch · 06/03/2004 09:33

Sorry about your friend's sister too Evita.

willow2 · 06/03/2004 11:18

Suppose it's possible - my sister pushed so hard she popped a lung.

jac34 · 06/03/2004 12:14

I had my retinas reattached about 12 years ago, when I was pregnant with my DS's, I was told I would not be allowed to push during labour, as there was too much risk of damage to my eyes.
I was given the choice of a viginal birth with suction and foceps, or a c section.
As I was having twins, they also thought there may be a chance, of one being born viginally and still needing a section for the second.
So in effect 2 lots of stitches !!!

suedonim · 06/03/2004 12:25

WWW, yes, they are sweet and very gentle but I find this one too simpering and fawning. She's begging for approval all the time, it gets on my nerves to be adored this much. She's positively embarrassing when it comes to men, throwing herself at them like a hussy of the first order, legs akimbo!

handlemecarefully · 06/03/2004 20:45

Oh now in a quandry....do I ask my obstetrician about eye popping during labour at my appointment on Monday and risk his incredulity...or do I have bad dreams about this between now and due date?

dinosaur · 06/03/2004 21:23

God, I wish I hadn't read this thread...another thing to worry about...

miggy · 06/03/2004 21:48

Suedonim-probably shouldnt tell you this but Lisa78 is wrong cavaliers eyes can pop out-our last cavalier-both hers popped out, one went back in ok but was useless then the other one came out and wouldnt go back in and was removed. She was blind for last 5yrs of her life-but v.happy, most people didnt even notice. Good news is its not pulling on the lead that does it, its being picked up by scruff of neck. In our case by another dog. Quite unusual though and unlikely to happen at your dogs age-unless she gives birth of course

suedonim · 06/03/2004 22:07

Gaaaargh, Miggy!!! Think I'll have her put to sleep when the vet reopens on Monday.

I'd get a hernia if I tried to pick her up by the scruff, heehee, and she can't give birth cos I had her spayed when I found out I was expecting my fourth baby.
