horrific birth story

A friend of mine's just told me that her sister just gave birth and pushed so hard that her eyeball popped out of its socket and now she's facially quite disfigured and no-one knows if it will ever go back to normal. I've NEVER heard of this happening before, has anyone else? And if so, what's the outlook?

omg willow2, what is popping a lung?

spacemonkey · 08/03/2004 10:06

sounds like a myth to me too. You wouldn't need cosmetic surgery if your eyeball popped out!

Twinkie · 08/03/2004 10:20

Sorry this is physically impossible!!

StripyMouse · 08/03/2004 10:34

This thread should come with a warning to all pregnant m2bs not to read it - although I guess that would prob. lead to more actually bothering with it.

If this is not an urban myth, I just don?t believe for a single minute that it could lead to any kind of permanant disfigurement. It just doesn?t ring true - unless she had some kind of weird eye problem she hasn?t toldanyone about. If there was any kind of possibility that this might happen (even if reasonably rare), they would tell us about it - after all the medical proffession tell us about all sorts of very rare possible complications. If anyone out there is really bothered by it, just plan to keep your eyes shut during the last final few pushes (that?s if you are even remembering all this nonsense at such a moment in time anyway).

I know someone who burst a blood vessel in their eye whilst giving birth.

handlemecarefully · 08/03/2004 11:52

Yes I must say Evita, that I am very sceptical too....

dinosaur · 08/03/2004 11:53

Bursting a blood vessel in your eye I can understand, you can do that through coughing. That's not too scary.

MancMum · 08/03/2004 13:04

this is completely impossible - I asked my sister about it - she used to be an opthalmic nurse and it is just not possible for anyone to pop an eye out - there is a series of ligaments etc keeping the eye in place.. sounds like she had a bad time and blew some vessels maybe....

Evita · 08/03/2004 21:12

Really Mancmum? I saw my friend at the weekend and she swears it's true. I'm not saying the eye completely came out, I mean it was obviously still attached by something but I think it did come out of the socket. Unless they're all exagerrating.

Can I say I have never heard of a woman's eyes popping out when pushing during labour. Eyes can get bloodshot but i doubt if they would pop out.

Bozza · 09/03/2004 12:37

Given the pushing I had to put in to get DS out, I doubt I will damage anything this time that wasn't done last time. Piles were pretty bad though.

gold123 · 09/03/2004 13:11

I burst alot of blood vessels in my eyes when having my dd. I held my breath and pushed instead of breathing, that's what did it. Second labour I was fine. Remember Breathe !

bundle · 09/03/2004 17:54

eye surgeon who I spoke to last week said this myth about taking your eye out & putting it on your cheek to operate on it (we were talking about cataracts) was just that: a myth. you would have to cut the optic nerve to do that, and then it obviously would never work as an eye again...

Evita · 09/03/2004 20:46

Ok, so do you think it's a bit of a scam? Or an exagerration? Feel a bit foolish for believing it now ...

Evita,

Don't feel embarassed for believing it! - I would probably have believed it too if it was a friend telling me.
