had the first put in under GA almost five years ago (couple of months to go to 5yr mark) - a bit Hmm that a replacement will be thrust upon me, as it were. Don't need or want another GA, but tell me the truth please....

I've had three and never had more than a neurofen and I am not at all brave. One became embedded a little and was tricky to get out and even that wasn't much of a problem, to my surprise and relief. Don't worry.

MrsShrek3 · 26/01/2014 00:07

thank you Thanks
eeek at embedded (I had a very weird dream along those lines last night, hence the threadBlush )

I had mine replaced under sedation, i didn't want sedation but have a bit of a prolapse going on and the dr couldnt see my cervix properly.Blush They wanted me to have it done under GA, i told them to feck off and if that was the case to leave it where it was! I didn't want the sedation but they insisted, i had it done, it was a bit uncomfortable, but i must have enjoyed some of it because i told the doctor "oooh, that felt good" because i was off my face on whateer they sedated me with Blush Thankfully it was in a private hospital (even thouh NHS patient) that i shall never go back to so will never have to see those people again!

Slipshodsibyl · 26/01/2014 00:14

I am a bit surprised to hear about sedation and ga. Mine have been put in/ out in four different countries ( living overseas) and I've only ever been told to take a neurofen / paracetamol before the appointment.

I've got one now to last through the menopause as they are supposed to help and I've had no symptoms at all so far.

LEMmingaround · 26/01/2014 00:16

Slipshod - i only had to do that because of the um, slackness tht i have down there Blush otherwise it would be popped in at the health centre. When i had mine put in, i didn't even realise the Dr had done it, didnt feel a thing

MrsShrek3 · 26/01/2014 00:17

great... quite happy with the notion that it can be done with no more than nurofen Smile is there, umm, much fiddling about?

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 26/01/2014 00:18

Yup 4 or 5 replacements here and just some paracetamol if that.

Slipshod - my latest is part of my hrt therapy, I did get some flushes and cystitis with the Mirena alone eventually.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 26/01/2014 00:19

A little more fiddling than a smear. But not much more.

MrsShrek3 · 26/01/2014 10:48

how near the 5yr mark does it need to be?

OP posts:
Slipshodsibyl · 26/01/2014 12:11

It can go on longer. I have been told 7 years informally by more than one gynae but it is licensed officially for 5. I was told they were likely to extend the time but as far as I know they haven't.

But check this for yourself . I'd hate my information to be responsible for any unplanned baby Shreks..

LIZS · 26/01/2014 12:18

On 3rd , uncomfy and crampy for a day or so afterwards. Ibruprofen is ok and you can ask for a relaxant if insertion is an issue (cervix can react and spasm a bit). I went over 5 years and it didn't seem to eb a problem , just has not been tested and licensed for longer.

LordEmsworth · 26/01/2014 12:21

I had mine put in 6 months ago - no painkillers, nothing. I felt awful afterwards for about an hour, then I threw up and suddenly no longer wanted to die Grin. It was fine, but I am in NO RUSH to do it again...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/01/2014 12:27

Mine is due to be replaced, I had an appt booked at the sexual health clinic before Christmas but the doctor was ill and they cancelled. I need to re-book but I've lost the phone number. Mine went in absolutely fine (with a prolapse) - I've since had the prolapse repaired (it was a rectocele, not a prolapsed uterus) and developed another one (cystocele) so not sure how easy it's going to be. I really should have asked for it to be replaced while they were doing the prolapse repair. I'm about 6 months over the 5 year mark and in my mid 40s, really don't want any accidents, so ought to get it seen to. Thank you for reminding me!

HamletsSister · 26/01/2014 13:02

On my 3rd. Just took ibruprofen and paracetamol. Uncomfortable but not much worse than a smear and no issues afterwards. Had it replaced and was back at work 20 mins later.

Interested in how it helps with menopause. Anyone know any more about this. Am 45 but feeling the signs and taking Menopace (.placebo?) Have had Mirena since I was 32.

Slipshodsibyl · 26/01/2014 14:27

It contains a progestin hormone which replaces some of the lost hormones I think. No oestrogen though. However it seems to be enough to support some women though others might add oestrogen if they wanted to try hrt.

CMOTDibbler · 26/01/2014 14:44

I'm on my third Mirena, and the replacement didn't hurt at all. Very quick and easy

I also have it to put off - or possibly avoid - a hysterectomy. Before it I had endometriosis, polyps and quite an assorment of ishoos. Cue hysteroscopy and massive clearout, and mirena in. so I want a replacement as the last 5 yrs has been like heaven Smile I'm 42.

I had my 1st replacement and it was a total mare. Removing the 1st was not a big deal at all, but getting the 2nd in made me feel really bad. I had had a bad time getting the 1st in, and had asked for something to help with the 2nd, but was told I couldn't and should take paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand. Wish I could have had sedation! But I recovered within 24h and it was wirthwhile.

The menopause thing is that the Mirena provides progesterone so you can take oestrogen-only HRT and do not have to have a bleed to prevent endometrial overgrowth or cancer.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/01/2014 21:09

I've been wondering how you would know you were menopausal with a Mirena in place and no periods?

HamletsSister · 26/01/2014 21:10

Me too, WhoKnows.

Slipshodsibyl · 26/01/2014 21:50

There are secondary signs - chin hairsSad and Dennis Healey eyebrows. But hair thins in other places. I don't really have others except I am of an age when it simply must be happening.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 26/01/2014 22:28

Whoknows hot flushes are often an early sign, followed by 'senior moments', bad sleep, mood swings and palpitations.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/01/2014 22:31

I had mine replaced by the GP, at our surgery, and it was absolutely fine - I don't think I even needed a neurofen afterwards.

MrsShrek3 · 26/01/2014 22:32

hmmm. at the last check, around six months ago, I wasn't even perimenopausal Confused was quite looking forward to starting to feel warm for the first time in my life Grin
