GRRR..... AT HORRIBLE DOCTOR'S RECEPTIONIST

I've been on the phone to my g.p. asking for my ds2 (2 years and 2 months old) to see the doctor - he has a very, very bad case of chickenpox. I know this as he is my fourth child and know what normal chickenpox looks like.

Guess what the receptionist said?

"Oh, he doesn't need to see a doctor if he's just got chickenpox"...... WTF does she know, she hasn't seen my poor ds2. I told her he was my fourth child, I'd never taken the others to the doctor when they had it, but I know that my ds2 has come down very badly with it and I'd like special creams to help sooth his red raw bottom that is covered in weeping spots - he screams when he has a wee. Again she said, "everything sounds normal to me, I don't think it is necessary, you can't bring him here, I'll get a doctor to RING you"....

I just wanted to rant about receptionists, I've had many a run-in with this one and I intend to tell the g.p. when he/she rings me.

MummyDear - receptionists much hate us 'mums' - so why don't they just agree with us in the first place and do away with all the upset. Glad your ds was seen to fast and that it wasn't anything too serious!

Browny glad to hear they gave you an appointment in the end. I have changed surgeries due to 'hitler' receptionists. Yes it can be hard work etc. but surely if you are nice to the patients they respond in kind?

ds was barely 3 months old, temperature, coughing his little lungs out and unable to keep any food down. After 2 days I happened to walk past surgery to ask whether there are any appointments for the day because he's so young and not eating etc. What does that cow say? You should have calle first!?! Erhem I wasn't in there demanding to be seen now! I was being very friendly and enquiring about the possibility to be seen sometime that day. Anyways she said 'you can come back at 16:30 but no guarantee he'll be seen'. WTF??? When doc saw me I told her and the receptionist got a telling off as ds was severely dehydrated at that point.

I have to say here though that the surgery I moved to is absolutely lovely. All receptionists are angels and if I call in because one of the kids is sick I always get an appointment even if there are not really any left.

Hiya, well I took him to see a very lovely g.p., who was shocked at his appearance and the lack of compassion from his receptionist, he said he'd, "have a word with her". He prescribed more Piriton, Eurax cream (which is wonderful stuff), Ibuprofen and a special anti-biotic cream for his poor little red raw bum. He said to take him back if I was worried. So now my little ds2 has had a nap, he looks like a pink alien and is happy sitting on my knee eating yet another ice-pop!

Thanks everyone for your support.

oh, MrsBigD - where do you live? I want to live in your area and have lovely, helpful receptionists, just goes to show that we need to stand our ground when we know in our hearts that our child is not well and jump up and down until we are happy they are treated! Very shocked that your little one was dehydrated .

what a cow i hate doctors receptionists no offence they are so snotty some of them. They make you feel stupid.

BROWNY · 24/07/2006 16:07

I know!! I mentioned it to my local chemist, (he knows my family well), he said that even he had a run-in with the same receptionist this morning too!

Glad your DS is feeling a bit better.

I really like our doctors' surgery and its receptionists. There is an excellent system for seeing doctors or nurses, including a drop in every day at 3pm where you will see a doctor that day, they answer the phones happily at 8am when they open and if you have a child who needs to see a doctor you always seem to get fitted in.

chipmonkey · 24/07/2006 16:12

There were some lovely receptionists in my old GPs surgery but now we've moved, we have a right battle-axe of a receptionist. Due to her misinformation ds3 was very late having his first vaccinations but she always hints that he was so late due to my incompetence as a parent!

Pudmog · 24/07/2006 16:14

Browny really emapthise with the chickenpox and nasty receptionist. Dd2 had the worst chickenpox bum the nurse had ever seen- the only way dd2 could wee was to stick her in a cool bath laced with sodium bicarb- worked a treat. Did this 5-6 times a day. HTH

BROWNY · 24/07/2006 19:19

Pudmug - thanks

My daughter's had the chickenpox when they were both out of nappies and my ds1 had them just 2 weeks ago and he's 7, so I've never experienced (not personally ) 'chickenpox bum' before, I was so shocked as it looked red raw with oozing spots, it actually looks like a bad burn . Thanks for the tip about the bath, I'll put him in one now, he always cheers up when I say, "bath time" .

we have a receptionist who is officially a witch.
i even got my lovely ( if barely accessible ) GP to admit she was afraid of her.
this woman announced to the whole waiting room that if my fertility treatment injection was not a priority and i would have to wait til last, even though there is a 1st com 1st serve basis for seeing patients. I was made to wait 1.5 hours until i went up and asked how much longer and she said she had 'accidently' forgot to type my name into the system.

BROWNY · 24/07/2006 21:29

Cremolafoam, that's awful . Why is she allowed to behave like that? If a receptionist of a large firm acted like that towards clients, she would be sacked! In cases where the doctors' actually know their receptionists are offending their patients, surely the doctors' have the right to sack them! It's very sad to know that my experiences are not rare at all .

BROWNY · 25/07/2006 15:11

that's quite a mouthful of a new name you've got there! Yeah, you're right about it being Pat - she's a right dragon, I don't know how she's been getting away with speaking to patients like that for so long! Shall we start a petition to get rid lol?

The funny thing is I went to primary school with pats son and my mum knew her through a mutual friend, although my mum didn't really like her at all, she came to my mums funeral and bawled her eyes out I mean hysterically we all found it quite bizzarre because it's not like we saw her often. She is a complete cow of a receptionist she talks to people like they are a piece of shit , I can't believe Dr hargreaves still employs her!

mummyhill · 25/07/2006 16:11

Our surgery will try to fit you in the same day for a child under 5 but otherwise you need to go infull battle gear to get an appointment.
