Hypothyroidism question

podkin · 17/07/2006 11:56

I am currently on a v low dose of thyroxine but have started to feel a bit shitty again over the last couple of weeks. Are general aches and pains considered a symptom of hypothyroidism because I seem to be getting these recently ? Have suffered from feeling low, tiredness, brain fog etc before so I do know the signs, but not aches and pains. Anyone in a similiar situation ?

I have had hypithyroidism for about 15 years. I don't recall any aches and pains being associated with it. Maybe a virus? When is the last time they checked your levels? When first diagnosed they checked more often, then once a year after it stabilized.

jabberwocky · 17/07/2006 19:24

"hypothyroidism"

glassofwine · 17/07/2006 20:16

I have it too, but no aches and pains - perhaps something else?

podkin · 18/07/2006 07:46

Hi

thanks for your replies. I am probably just getting old ! jabber, I only started the thyroxine about 6 months ago and have just been tested again so we'll see what results I get next week.

Taken from Mayo Clinic Web Site. Hope this helps. I tend to get aches and pains and muscular weakness at the age of 30 and I take 125mcg tyroxine a dya which is apparently keeping my levels smack bang in the middle of the acceptable range. Have days when I still feel shit but am much better than I was before getting a diagnosis.

The signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism vary widely, depending on the severity of the hormone deficiency. But in general, any problems you do have tend to develop slowly, often over a number of years.

At first, you may barely notice symptoms such as fatigue and sluggishness, or you may simply attribute them to getting older. But as your metabolism continues to slow, you may develop more obvious signs and symptoms, including:

Increased sensitivity to cold
Constipation
Pale, dry skin
A puffy face
Hoarse voice
An elevated blood cholesterol level
Unexplained weight gain
Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints
Muscle weakness
Heavier than normal menstrual periods
Depression

i was feeling crappy before getting diagnosed with hypothyroidism.i had heavy achey legs and my body aches just from getting up.i cried walking to the school one day because i hurt all over!
i was also feeling so tired and forgot simple things and my speech even started to slow.
if youre feeling achey and crappy, its worth asking your gp to check your thyroid levels again.mine go up and down like a yo yo!

mummyhill · 18/07/2006 14:33

Sanp. I have been suffereing since the age of sixteen, finally got a diagnosis at 24 and am still having three monthly blood tests at thirty. Dosage varies from 100mcg to 150mcg per day.

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 14:38

im currently on 150mcg,but im feeling achey and tired again,so i think it needs checking.
the highest dose i ever had to have was when i was pregnant the last time.i was on 300mcg a day.(lost 4 stone whilst pregnant!!turned out gp had prescribed too much!!)

podkin · 18/07/2006 14:40

Aha - thanks mummyhill. So it seem to be related to the hypothyroidism after all.

I am only on a very low dose atm - 25mcg. Have just had blood tests and waiting for results. I certainly feel like I am getting symptoms again, as I have felt pretty good for the last 6 months and there is a marked difference to how I feel now.

I can't imagine what it must be like to have even lower levels like you mh and buffy - I felt bloody awful before I was diagnosed.
Crap innit ?

when i first went to gp saying i felt crap, and tired and very low,he put me on prozac fro 6 months!!
after i cried on the way to school i went to see him, told him i couldnt carry on feeling this bad.he decided to take my blood (hadnt done a blood test before when i forst went)
i got a phone call on the friday telling me to go and see him urgently,he said if i hadnt had it done when i did, within 2 weeks i would have possibly collapsed, within 6 weeks my internal organs would have slowed to the point that my kidneys would have stopped functioning and shortly after i would have died!!!
i ahd to thank my gp for his lovely bedside manner!!put the shits up me completely!!
he also said i would be infertile (went on to have another 2 babies)!!!
needless to say,i dont see him anymore!!

podkin · 18/07/2006 14:53

buffy that's awful ! Some doctors are sooo insensitive (and crap as well - hyothyroidism is relatively common - why didn't he test you routinely ?). I have had 2 children within a year of each other and think this is what contributed to my levels dropping. I felt crap after ds was born and pregnant with dd, but actually put it down to either post or antenatal depression, plus other external factors. My doc did the blood test as a routine when I went for my post natal check up and put me on thyroxine within the week.

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:09

when i first went he said i had depression as at the time i was very stressed and me and dh had split up.so he blamed it on that.told me i had to snap out of it because of the kids!!!
get this then, this shows what a good gp he is,one woman tokk her 12 year old to see him complaining of headaches.he sent him away.she went back every day as her ds was crying with the pain.he told her her ds was just trying to get off school as he was probably getting bullied!she wasnt happy and took him to a & e on that night (by this time she had been to see him every day for 5 days)
her ds was diagnosed with a brain tumour and was operated on the day after he got taken to the hospital.
gp said he was under a lot of pressure and such a thing is hard for a gp to diagnose!!

podkin · 18/07/2006 15:23

oh my god - he should be struck off ! Was he older by any chance ? I do wonder about gps sometimes. Some of them don't seem to know their arse from their elbow...
Doesn't inspire you with much faith does it ?

OP posts:
buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:27

hes in his late 50's but i think hes jsut sitting there waiting to retire tbh.you should see the sports cars he keeps buying!!he gets a new one every year.

podkin · 18/07/2006 15:30

Older male gps tend to be very old fashioned - I have found - although I am sure there are some very good ones out there as well. The ones I have come across tend to be patronising, give you little information and don't seem at all interested in what you have to say - in short a crap bedside manner.

OP posts:
buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:36

i totally agree.
we had to take dd to emergency gp on a saturday as she was having breathing probs.she has cf so any noises in her chest, usually mean infection.
there was this 300 year old gp,no joke,he had the nurse help him out of teh chair!!he listened to dd's chest and said teh noise was normal for a cf baby!!we knew it wasnt normal for her,and he told us to go to teh hospital if we werent ahppy with his diagnoses.but he said "ive been doing this job for over 40 years and i can assure you taht all cf children have noisey breathing"
we took her to teh hospital (he was a village cottage hospital and we ended up going to teh big one in bangor) and after a chest xray they said she had a severe chest infection.i was so angry and wanted to go and twat the old gp!!!dont know where they dug him up from, but luckily weve never seen him again.

suzywong · 18/07/2006 15:40

Grrrr at old m en GPS, one tried to pass of my focal migraine do to adverse reaction to the pill as just a headache.

But, I just wanted to give a squeeze on the knee to all of you who felt like Shite for so long before anyone became concernced or gave a diagnosis, been there done that for 3.5 years and 2 PGs. Big cheer for thyroxene, I bloody love it.

FWIW, watch out for tingly fingers at night on top of muscle aches as a sign you need a blood test

Yoga is very good for us too as some of the postures stimulate the 'roid naturally.

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:45

oooh suzy, didnt know taht about yoga.
i know im due another blood test, feel very sluggish at the moment.get tingling fingers but thought it was due to bad circulation, didnt associate it with thyroid!!but thinking of it logically your thyroid controls your metabolism so yes if your tingling because of circulation probs, its because you metabolism is slowing down!
does that make sense how ive put it?i know what i mean anyway!!!you can excuse me,im too blonde for my own good!!

suzywong · 18/07/2006 15:49

yes get a test love

It is starting to get my dander up, all of us who are like zombies with the brain fog and the dread of sleeping like the living dead and the various other ailments - a puffy, scaley face that frightened children in my case - and we are told to snap out of it or get our heads down for a few hours or that once the baby is sleeping through it will be better. GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

However we have the wonderful thyroxene

podkin · 18/07/2006 15:50

lol at wanting to twat the 300 year old gp buffy.

suzy - funny you should mention tingly fingers. Mine aren't so much tingly as numb when I wake up. I find that my arms, leg and fingers are a all numb/pins and needle-ish when I wake up - a bit like I have slept funny. Walking around a bit sorts it out. Do you think low levels cause poor circulation ?

sorry - crossed post with you buffy. You're right about the metabolism thing.

OP posts:
buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:52

did you put lots of weight on?
i went from 9 stone to 14 and gp said i was comfort eating,he didnt believe that i am one of the pickiest eaters around!im worse tahn my kids!!i still dont eat much, but when my thyroxine level is down i still manage to pile on the weight.i also manage to lose it incredibly quickly when im having to much thyroxine!!

suzywong · 18/07/2006 15:52

YES! that's it!
go and demand a test THIS INSTANT
