I gave up for 3.75 years while breeding then was an occasional (2-5 a week and more on the rare occasions a I was on the lash). And I finally stood up and said " I have been smoking again and I want to admit it and stop" 6 weeks ago. Wasn't difficult at all, not since I had a dream that I had lung cancer and had to tell the Fragrant Boys why. I woke up in a cold sweat.

So good luck to everyone else.

willow2 · 16/07/2006 11:30

Still off them and am absolutely certain it is for good this time. Bar a two week blip around Christmas, it's been about nine months or so. Feel so much better - and, like Charlie and Tooticky say, you do feel free, like you've escaped from this horrible, invisible jailer. And yes, you do feel smug for finally having outwitted them! Anyhow, good luck to everyone who is still trying.

southeastastra · 16/07/2006 11:57

Good luck rickman.

Posey · 18/07/2006 20:34

Still off them here, 11 months down the line. Know I'll never ever do it again, but funnily enough I'm not anti-smoking as such. Yes I encourage my odd friends who still do, but a not all waving smoke away and getting all holier-than.

charliecat · 18/07/2006 20:37

I probably put you off all that Posey
I hate seeing smokers even when I dont know them, what a waste of good life.
Cannot believe I was ever so dumb.

Posey · 18/07/2006 20:41

I think I know if I'd been preached at, I wouln't have given up. Dh is an ex-smoker and I knew he wanted me to stop (of course) but he never nagged or moaned at me. He just let me do it in my own time, when I was in the right frame of mind. I think because I was psychologically prepared thats why I never craved a fag or thought I was being deprived of something.
CC - you've given a brilliant service over the past year or 2, well done!

mummyplonk · 18/07/2006 20:49

I gave up 6 months ago after 14 yrs of smoking and I am struggling a bit. I must admit I think about having one every time I get a seconds peace when the baby sleeps, I think right, it's my time now to relax and "it" pops into my head. So to stop it I throw myself into housework which isnt at all relaxing (obviously). Doh! I feel really weak but I honestly didnt think I was addicted as I only used to smoke about 5 a day, but obviously was. Can anyone else recomment a relaxing trigger that works the same to indicate it's "me" time now! I am breatfeeding as well, can I use patches?

willow2 · 18/07/2006 21:08

Rickman "patches seem to be working fine... but I am seeing double"

Posey · 18/07/2006 21:16

mummyplonk - I used to have the reward of a minute or 2 me-time on the balcony with a fag, coffee and magazine.
Carried on doing it, just without the fag which I used to smoke unconsciously anyway. Still got a few minutes peace and the kids always knew they weren't to follow me.

mummyplonk · 18/07/2006 21:27

aaah, balcony, fag, magazine my 3 favourite things....no no no no am going to throw myself into a fitness routine. I used to be really fit and run for county etc, can I get it back after 10 yrs I wonder. I Saw race for life this weekend and those women were brilliant, and the underlying thing is how I would feel if my sons started smoking...heartbroken. As I miss the taste maybe I should try some of that chewing gum, has anyone tried that?

Posey · 18/07/2006 21:30

I did the moonwalk as a smoker. Did it this year as a non smoker. The difference was huge.
Also really wanted to take up running, to do a marathon the year I'm 40 (long standing dream0.
No way I could do that smoking. And the rate at which I've improved. Couldn't even run around park with the kids before, and NOW I CAN

charliecat · 18/07/2006 21:31

Dont go near nicotine chewing gum. Its really addictive...and if youve been off the fags 6 months stay clear of the patches. Your is a mental thing....they didnt REALLY relax you...you just took 5 mins out of life to smoke one, so they give that illusion.
Deep breaths and rub your temples. Take a coffee or water and a mag and go out of sight of everyone for 5 and just chill.
Many mums go back to smoking after having babies...dont do it...your toddler will go to nursery stinking of smoke Its awful.

mummyplonk · 18/07/2006 21:44

Well done Posey, Go for the next London Marathon!. Thanks Chariecat I think you know I am at that transition stage where I've had the baby, am breastfeeding but thinking (I could get my life back)would the baby/partner be happier with a less stressed out mummy. I dont have any in the house but every time I go shopping I think about buying some.
