"The paediatric radiologist has looked at Sebastian's X-Rays and although he cannot give a precise diagnosis, does not feel that he has achondroplasia, nor Asphyxiating Thoracic Dystrophy. He thinks that the thorax is probably normal, although the films are not perfect in their technical quality. He suggests some more X-Rays, which I will order when I see you again, together with a repeat chest X-Ray. He does think that Sebastian has some sort of dysplasia, but from his comments, it would not appear to be one of the major types.

I hope that this sets your mind more at rest, although I know how difficult it can be not having a specific diagnosis."

Don't know what to feel now. Sort of good news, I suppose!?

Sounds cautiously encouraging . How soon do you see the consultant again ?

LadyTophamHatt · 07/07/2006 16:45

Yes, Em I'd take that a good news.....

Glad you've finally had an answer from him.

Cautiously optimistic in tone!

What does dysplasia mean exactly, emkana?

tallmummy · 07/07/2006 16:47

It sounds sort of positive. Waiting for results is so frustrating - especially when you they can't give you a proper diagnosis.
Thinking of you a lot emkana - hope all gets sorted soon. How is your little Sebastian doing?

Alan · 07/07/2006 16:47

so its not the worse case scenario, so that is really good emkana Hopefully you will hear about the other x-rays soon

YellowFeathers · 07/07/2006 16:48

Thats sounds like great news Emkana.

(I posted on your BA thread today)

Furball · 07/07/2006 16:48

Does sound very positive, hopefully the
next x-rays won't be long.

emkana · 07/07/2006 16:49

Will go and see the consultant on the 24th.

Dysplasia means a disorder of the growth of the bones.

OP posts:
emkana · 07/07/2006 16:51

Phoned dh and he sort of poo-pooed it and said that the radiologist probably didn't even know what he was talking about - I was quite taken aback because normally dh is so positive!

The radiologist wouldn't rule out something he had never heard of, would he? If he hadn't heard of Asphyxiating Thoracic Dysplasia (aka Jeune Syndrome) he would look it up before ruling it out, wouldn't he?

OP posts:
LeahE · 07/07/2006 16:52

Is Asphyxiating Thoracic Dystrophy the same as Jeune's (I know Jeune's affects the thorax and is asphyxiating)?

It does sound encouraging, and if his thorax is fine that will rule out a lot of the nastier possibilities, won't it?

emkana · 07/07/2006 16:53

yes, asphyxiating thoracic dysplasia is the other name for Jeune's syndrome

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 07/07/2006 16:58

Ooooh, I think that's good news. As Lizs says, cautiously encouraging.

LeahE · 07/07/2006 17:00

Ah, cross-posted. So it is the same thing. Yes, I can't see a paediatric radiologist saying that he doesn't feel someone has Asphyxiating Thoracic Dystrophy if he didn't know what it was.

LeahE · 07/07/2006 17:00

Cross-posted again!

edam · 07/07/2006 17:15

I agree it's good news.

WellKnownMemorablePeachyClair · 07/07/2006 17:17

In Consultant language, that's pretty positive Emkana!

I'll be away when you see Consultant next, but sending you lots of good vibes early- fingers crossed and hugs to you all XXXXX

CristinaTheAstonishing · 07/07/2006 17:45

Emkana, that sounds like really good news, none of the major types, maybe something minor, so minor that they can't quite say what it is. How is Sebastian otherwise?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/07/2006 17:58

Em - I think that's positive in consultant's language. IME they are invariably pessimistic and to say 'does not feel that he has achondroplasia, nor Asphyxiating Thoracic Dystrophy' is probably as close as you'll get to 'he's in the clear' at this point.

How's the little chap doing?

emkana · 07/07/2006 19:04

He's doing well, sleeps a lot which in my current warped state of mind worries me when I should actually be pleased, shouldn't I?

Am now also worrying what all these x-rays will do to him.
God it never stops...

em just quickly, sounds like good news I think too. (so quickly that my grammar has dissolved...)
I had dislocated hip as a baby and a lot of X-rays (and in those days they were more 'toxic' iyswim) and I seem fine . Of course you're going to worry about your lovely little Sebastian but try not to worry too much about the X-rays. xxx

emkana · 07/07/2006 20:15

Thanks for reassuring me fit

Sounds like pretty good news Emkana . Surely each thing crossed off the list of possibles is good?

Hope you're enjoying having him safely in your arms at last.
