Lactose intolerence?

Does any one have a baby who is lactose intolerent and if so how did you know?

my ds was and had excema when he was a baby. He was bf and I cut out milk and diary from my diet and it went. Dont know for sure of course if this is why. When we were weaning him and if any milk product touched his skin he would get a rash with read raised lumps although it never bothered him.
We were told that because he had a bottle of formula in teh hospital this may have triggered off a milk allergy although he has no problems now at 8. I bfed him for a long time as we have lots of allergies including milk in the family just in case.

charlieplus3 · 21/02/2004 13:22

ok. I had no problems when i was feeding him but now mainly formula he has constant green poo, as per my previous thread.

His cheek keeps getting bright red and blotchy too, thought may be teeth but could it be where the milk dribbles down his cheek.

Obviously dont want him to have an allergy, just ans to why this is happening. His dad has milk allergy ao is possible i supose

Sounds similar with the red things on the face.
The British allergy foundation have a help line and were really good when we were going through this with ds. I'll try to find the link.
my db is now in his 30's and still has bad excema and was bottlefed. There is no way of knowing if my dm had bf it would have been any different as I am fine and was bottlefed (although have bad rhinitis). I was advised to bf as long as possibelcos of allergies although its no guarantee of course.
I'll search for the number for you.

Same thing with ds re the wheeziness, he also had lots of phlegm and was sick alot with this which can apparently be caused by milk intolerance. i am not a doctor though.

I don't have any experience of this myself, but I'll just butt in if I may . Lactose intolerance isn't actually an allergy, it's caused by a defect in an enzyme called lactase, which is needed to metabolise lactose and break it down. An allergy is really quite different. There's some good reliable information here .

hercules · 21/02/2004 13:49

Looking at that link from tamum i would say that my ds had a milk allergy then not lactose intolerance.

stace · 21/02/2004 13:54

firstly there is a really long thread on lactose intolerance under health- milk allergy i think. From my experience read between the lines and dont get too worked up about it. My little one was almost immediately diagnosed with projectile vomit when he went on the bottle at about 4 weeks old he was prescribed ranitadine and gaviscon and we religiously kept a diary to try to work out why he vomitted his milk fairly constantly. Got used to carrying at least 3-4 changes of clothing with me all the time and was just told to live with it/ he has a small windpipe/eventually he'll grow out of it!!! (All quite mad now that i look back!!) Anyhow at age 1 put him on cows milk and the vomitted got much much much worst within a week i changed him to soya milk and it all stopped over night. Then he started to develop rashes and eczma so switched him to rice milk with added vitamins (and i add more Biocare kids liquid vitamins)at about age 2, hes 4 next week and still loves his rice dream original with added vitamins so i would suggest that you do some research and speak to the doctors about your concerns etc, good luck

stace · 21/02/2004 13:58

Also you havent said how old your baby is but this can have some bearings and also makes some differemces to food etc. My DS has no problem with any other dairy products Yoghurt Cheese etc but just cant tolerate milk. Something to do with the protein in milk which is broken down differently in other products i think!!! But also there are special baby formulas available for milk intolerant babes.

tamum · 21/02/2004 14:00

It sounds more like allergy, doesn't it hercules? It's confusing, because intolerance and allergy are often used fairly interchangeably, but lactose intolerance is very well understood at the molecular level, and is therefore a very specific term. It's just worth knowing what you are dealing with, as the advice might be different in each case.

Poor you stace, glad you've got it under control!

stace · 21/02/2004 14:05

thanks for the sympathy yes i have had it under control for 3 years now just cant believe how obvious the problem was and how NO ONE helped me or advised me to try something else. Now pregnant again and wondering how the health care professionals with let me down this time!!! Sorry to any of you that are good kind and dedicated!!!

charlieplus3 · 21/02/2004 14:07

Sorry i was saying allergy and intolerence as the same thing as im renound for mixing up my words. Will go and read the thread now.

I did start weaning onto solids but stopped as he wasnt really ready and after reading weaning threads new it was ok to leave him another month.

OP posts:
charlieplus3 · 21/02/2004 14:08

OP posts:
stace · 21/02/2004 14:18

cp3 (hope you dont mind the abbreviation!) What makes you think he is Lactose intolerant/allergic whatever?

charlieplus3 · 21/02/2004 14:54

just that he has had green poo since started giving formula plus the wheezing ang cheek rash. hope not thats why asking for advice

OP posts:
hercules · 21/02/2004 15:01

Sounds like he has a milk allergy so i guess it depends on how you want to tackle it. There are special formulas you can use or follow mears advice re breastfeeding.

charlieplus3 · 21/02/2004 15:14

What would you do hercs?

OP posts:
stace · 21/02/2004 15:29

how long ago did you start the formula and have you tried different brands?

hercules · 21/02/2004 15:32

Well I carried on breastfeeding and am going to do the same for dd. i was happy to do so but if you dont want to then there is no point doing it and beating yourself up about it as there are alternatives.
There's no quarantees with the breastfeeding but imo it was the best thing for ds.
However if I hadnt want to continue i would have ised other formula quite happily.
There is no harm done to try the breastfeeding again and cut out the formula and put off solids until around six months if you are happy to do so but I cant think of anything worse than breastfeeding if you are not 100 % happy with it.
my dd is nearly 5 months and I am going to wait for the solids.

BTW ds was breastfed until he was four years old (shock, horror) for various reasons such as allergies as lots of these in immediate family although I will only aim for 2 years with dd as i think that would be enough for me this time round.

hercules · 21/02/2004 15:33

btw i am no earth mother

charlieplus3 · 21/02/2004 16:16
