Mouth ulcers - TMI

KatyMac · 02/10/2013 09:30

I have 3 largish mouth ulcers on the side of my tongue (2 visible & 1 further back)

I can't talk or swallow; as it is so painful

I can't even swallow my saliva & I can't spit it out either

I am so, so miserable; the GP would laugh though wouldn't they? The dentist has told me there is nothing that can be prescribed Sad

I have an infection (apparently) & Doxycycline and I'm supposed to rinse with Corsadyl (despite saying I've been previously told not to use it)

Haven't read all responses so sorry of its already been suggested
Soluble aspirin - gargle it & it will help take them down
If go to docs too

valiumredhead · 07/10/2013 19:12

OP I've just seen an ad on the Telly and thought of you,Bonjela have a mouth ulcer liquid you paint on and it acts like a plaster and it lasts up to 4 hours.

If be wary of aspirin, wouldn't it make them bleed?

KatyMac · 07/10/2013 20:48

Thanks everyone

Still feeling very miserable

Another vote for l lysine which you can get from holland and Barrett. Generally two days of taking them and they go.

EdwiniasRevenge · 08/10/2013 09:13

Can I hijack and ask why cosodyl isn't recommended? If I get ulcers or sore gums I find it clears them up a treat. I either use corsodyl or oraldine whichever I have in. Am I doing the wrong thing?

HaveAGoodDay · 08/10/2013 09:28

I use to get these mouth ulcers (touching wood as got severe sore strep throat at moment!) that were absolutely horrendous. They were all along the side of my tongue ( which woukd look like it had been grated) and spread to the corner of my mouth, along my lip & it would turn white, the ulcers would turn white too. I couldn't talk or open my mouth & would be I'll for around a week. I could only drink through a straw.

It would get so bad I had to call a doctor out, who explained the next lever of pain relief would be morphine. She diagnoised is a 'gingivitis - something'' I forget now, but although it was too late to do give me anything then, the next time, as soon as, the very very second, I felt the slightest tingle of a cold sore, I needed aciclovir tablets. They only work if you take them within 48 hours of the virus entering your system.

So that's what I've done for the last 5 years. As soon as I've felt as much as the slightest little tingle on the corner of my mouth, I've rung the drs up & demanded the tablets explaining that if I don't have them what happens to me! It's kept those nasty mouth users at bay, might be same for you? Worth asking your GP next time you see yours.

Because we have to give advice based on what clinical trials and studies show, not just anecdotal evidence. For example here:
www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0030422087903100

KatyMac · 08/10/2013 22:18

Thanks Akiss -I always wondered

The GP insisted on giving me corsadyl (I couldn't speak) & my DH is objecting as I won't use it....I'll show him that Wink

I'm getting a private referral

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 10/10/2013 12:08

Personally I'd try anything once to see if it would help.

Gengtian (sp?) Violet used to be prescribed, it was soooooooo good but a terrible colourGrin

KatyMac · 10/10/2013 18:05

I have steroids, Difflam & she wants to know why I've never been referred before because I've always been told to "get on with it"

& please don't mess with my diet anymore until they have time to look at my blood tests & results

Years ago my mum suffered from terrible mouth ulcers and in the end she was diagnosed with pernicious anaemia. She had lost loads of weight and got really ill with it. Just a thought. Take care.

KatyMac · 11/10/2013 11:24

My mum has pernicious anaemia & I have been tested for it

Further developments in my mouth ulcer saga

1)My big tongue mouth ulcer has healed but there is still a crater
2)The tip of my tongue is covered in tiny little sores/ulcers less than the size of a pinhead
3)More ulcers have turned up on my cheeks - but they aren't too bad and don't interfere with eating

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 20/10/2013 12:40

God you poor thing, you're really having a dreadful time of itSad Thanks

KatyMac · 20/10/2013 13:40

Thanks - I am still feeling sorry for myself

OP posts:
greenhill · 20/10/2013 14:08

I'm not surprised you're feeling sorry for yourself, is feel sorry for you too. Flowers.

greenhill · 20/10/2013 14:09

That should read 'I feel sorry for you too'. Hope the blood test results give some answers Flowers

AmberLeaf · 20/10/2013 14:17

This may be useless as you have other health issues that may be causing this;

My son used to get really nasty painful ulcers that took ages to heal, he was prescribed [by GP] a thick paste that formed a seal, I wish I could remember the name? it was thick and grainy and you had to apply it to a dried tongue/gum. It really helped with eating as it stopped things stinging it.

It was in a small yellow tube [maybe someone else knows what it is and can put a name to it?]

Hope you find a solution soon.

Catinthebed · 20/10/2013 14:21

Amber that was Adcortyl in Orabase unfortunately no longer made but I would support a campaign to bring it back.

Katymac any GP worth thier salt won't laugh as they could be infected or a symptom of something else. I do fear tough you would be better before you got an appointment.

KatyMac · 20/10/2013 15:05

The GP wasn't much good tbh - when my friend phoned to say I was spitting out blood clots he said 'well I'm sure she will get better soon'

I saw the dentist & less than 6 hours later was being treated in the hospital - I was very impressed (I have bought him a bottle of nice wine)

The specialist was so kind & very gentle - she was lovely & I get to see her again on Thursday; apparently now she has me she is keeping me in the system!! Grin

Adcortyl was great but they stopped making it
