Anyone else had the virus from hell?

I've had it for about a week now. Started off with sore throat, coughing, heavy cold. Now (a week on) it's added fever, lethargy and vomiting & diarrorhea to its repertoire. I feel utterly depleted and was wondering when it's going to end!

Musical, hope you're alright. Waiting is horrible!

musicalfamily · 02/10/2013 14:37

EduCated, hope you feel better soon.

I know what you mean about waiting, I can't help but have the worse scenarios in my head, but DH keeps telling me I am being silly and I'll be ok.

EduCated · 02/10/2013 14:42

Thanks, I feel a bit of a wimp but I really do feel ill, I just can't really explain how. It's getting to the point that even my skin feels sore to the touch. I always feel such a fraud taking time off work, but there's no way if have done anything useful if I'd gone in today. Just convinced everyone thinks I'm skiving Sad Blush

Have you been told when to expect the results?

musicalfamily · 02/10/2013 14:56

2 weeks, but I suspect if it is anything sinister they would let me know earlier...

EduCated · 02/10/2013 15:01

Yeah, surely if it was something truly ominous they'd need to let you know sooner!

InMySpareTime · 02/10/2013 15:14

I keep thinking I'm over it, then starting things I can't finish.
I abandoned a few errands in the local town as I was flagging considerably after a 1-mile bike ride and 20 minutes walking round shops.
Usually I could do that much before breakfast! It's starting to get me down a bit now, the tiredness is just so relentless, like my energy is totally sapped.
At least none of the rest of the family have it, I'm not up to nursing the family!

Clairemum123 · 02/10/2013 19:52

This tiredness is overwhelming, and the dizziness is still there, I just keep drinking lots of water, it seems pro help,I was even thinking I was pregnant at one stage.

Hope you hear some good news soon musicalfamily, waiting is just horrible.
Hope everybody get over this horrid thing soon x

musicalfamily · 03/10/2013 08:33

Thanks Clairemum and hope everyone else feels better soon too!! x

hillbilly · 03/10/2013 10:43

I had it since 10th September. Not sure whether it is viral or bacterial but I'm on antibiotics now. I have terrible phlegm and if it have not cleared by next week I'm going to request a chest x ray.

musicalfamily · 03/10/2013 11:14

Hillbilly, I know how you feel, I have been the same. How long have you been on antibiotics for? I have been on amoxicillin for 9 days now and the phlegm is starting to clear but it's taken that long. I also had a chest X ray yesterday and I am really worried about the results! Still feel unwell and have a cold and my left side doesn't feel right....

Clairemum123 · 03/10/2013 11:34

Hi hillbilly, I had terrible congestion too, my chest is now clear after 4-5 weeks, 2 lots of steroids and antibiotics, but I'm still full of a cold which is all in my sinus's, and still dizzy, but today i forced my self To do my big tesco shop, stocked up on manuka honey and vitamin c, and I bumped into a friend who made me laugh, so feeling better for all of that, no more wallowing in it! Just hope I'm not back to square one tomorrow.
Musical family, I'm sure your X-ray will be fine, sending you positive thoughts

musicalfamily · 03/10/2013 11:39

Thanks Clairemum. Do you know I actually have very similar symptoms to yours and same length of time too. I wonder whether it is something doing the rounds? Seems a few of us on here with the same symptoms. Were the steroids nasal? I have those now and they help me to sleep...

orangina · 03/10/2013 11:45

Hello All.... I also have a vile cough/cold/sinus etc and am a bit fed up of it after 2+ weeks.....

musicalfamily, I had pneumonia a number of years ago and they initially put me on amoxycillin, which did sweet FA in terms of shifting the problem. I think I ended up on 5 consecutive courses of (various) ABs before they finally knocked it on the head. For what it's worth, if the amoxy isn't working, I think you need to insist on something a little more hard core in the ABs dept.....

Good luck!

orangina · 03/10/2013 11:46

PS: Am off to buy more vit c and manuka at lunchtime in an effort to knock this thing on the head before I see the GP next week (am trying to avoid ABs if I can help it).

AllDirections · 03/10/2013 11:47

I had the virus from hell in January 2008.

I've never recovered Sad

musicalfamily · 03/10/2013 12:11

Oh no, alldirections....did they ever find out what was wrong?

orangina I think you're right, I am going to see how it goes in the next day or two and if it doesn't get better I will be back!!! The X ray should reveal if there is still something lurking or not.....I am hoping not obviously!!

orangina · 03/10/2013 12:15

alldirections, sorry to hear that. After I was ill a few years ago, I finally got rid of most of the infection, but felt like hell. I went to see my acupuncturist, who set about "supporting" my recovery, and I felt like a milloioin dollars within a few weeks. Would HIGHLY recommend.

(Realise this all sounds just a little woo woo, but really it was amazing)

Smile
Clairemum123 · 03/10/2013 12:28

Oh no all directions, I'm sorry to hear that too, what was it?

Orangina, I think anything is worth a try, just to be better, I definitely think the manuka has helped, but now I'm afraid to stop having it! It's a lot cheaper in aldi.

Musical family don't be afraid to pester the doctor, that's their job, if anything it's nice to have some reassurance. My steroids were tablets ,6 a day in one go, but I think they gave me palpitations, I've never had them before, have not had to have antibiotics for 20 years! Try the menthol Chrystal's and manuka honey and sudafed and I've had Kalms as I've been anxious about it all! And 2 but c tablets a day. Take care

AllDirections · 03/10/2013 14:26

I've got fibromyalgia. There's no definite proof that it was the viral infection that caused it but it was like nothing that I'd experienced before! Definitely the viral infection from hell.

I would advise anyone who is ill to rest, rest and rest some more. I couldn't rest enough to fight off the infection, 3 DC, youngest only 12 months at the time, single parent, no help Sad

I believe that if I could have had time to be ill and to rest until I'd recovered then I probably wouldn't have fibromyalgia now. My immune system just couldn't cope!

MinesAPintOfTea · 03/10/2013 14:52

Sad AllDirections

I was suddenly struck by a nasty virus yesterday (DH had a milder version of the same bug 4 days ago) where I was suddenly faint and ad to call DH home from work to look after DS, who I kept in bed with me by putting postman pat on my smartphone until he got home.

Every joint is aching still and I'm still light-headed, although I've not actually vomited (my body's standard response to a fever) since yesterday evening.

brettgirl2 · 03/10/2013 19:55

I'm still not better either. It has been in my sinuses and then this week have developed an annoying tickly cough. Couldn't sleep last night for coughing and have felt ropey today. It's all been low grade but I'm just so ground down by it.

Next week may have to start action gp maybe and acupuncture (not least because she won't treat me unless I've been). I don't think I need ABs though, I don't think they'll do anything so visiting a doctor seems pointless.

I don't think it helps that I've been under loads of stress, I hate my job and my uncle has been in and out of intensive care (it doesn't look good) Sad

musicalfamily · 03/10/2013 20:04

brettgirl2 sorry to hear about your uncle and you feeling under the weather! I think I got so ill because I had been under severe stress too. I think it does make a difference to our immune systems!

I would go to the doc because I made the mistake of NOT going for ages (3 weeks) and by the 4th week I had a sinus infection and pneumonia!!
They might say it's just a virus but worth getting it checked out. Lots of feel better vibes to everyone. Hope tomorrow is a better day!!

Misspixietrix · 03/10/2013 20:07

Yep. Awful. Still fighting it now and trying to not let Dd (Low Immune System) get too close to me. All I want to do is sleep. Get well soon all.

musicalfamily · 04/10/2013 08:41

How's everyone this morning?

My chest seems to have eased a little, although I was up at 4:45am stressing out about my X ray results, which aren't due for ages yet. I am ridiculously anxious about things like that.

My cold is being kept at bay by the steroid spray....but it's still there. I think I am starting to feel a bit better though. Had moments of feeling nearly normal yesterday but feeling a bit rough today, because I didn't sleep much, I think. Also stopped coughing up horrible gunk now.

Hope everyone else is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

InMySpareTime · 04/10/2013 09:53

I'm still feeling tired. My aim today is to go to the butchers and greengrocers. It's a 5 minute walk, I'm psyching myself up to it.
On the plus side, I've got lots of writing done while I've been stuck at home.
Every cloud...
