I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis yesterday as it happens. I'm 44
I haven't been offered any treatment. Only anti inflammatories when its really bad....except, as they full know, I'm not allowed to take anti inflammatories .....

babyjane67 · 12/09/2013 11:19

Thamks qod for yr reply
Why cant u take ant inflams if u dont mind me askimg?
Where did yr oa start&how did u get diagmosed?
Do u think its worth mentionimg my elbow&knee pain too.?

I had a gastric bypass in 2010 and its dangerous to take anti inflammatories post op, my little stomach is hyper delicate, just irritates me that the Dr surgery is so clueless.
Sometime last year, one of them said to me "why are you going to an obesity clinic? You're not obese" I said well no, not now, but I was .... He asked how I lost weight ... I kind of tapped the screen infront of him to point it out. I dunno.
I came away feeling quite miffed, but then looking on the nhs website, it implies that steroid injections can help.
I might go back and see a different one and try that.

It's "just" my right big toe joint but it hurts! A lot!

Deffo mention other joints.

I had a blood test that ruled out gout and then X-ray. Interestingly the radiographer technician "told" me it was a bunion, but its not. Diagnosis was made by x,ray

babyjane67 · 14/09/2013 07:51

Thanks again qod
Wow youve had alot going on!
Gps are bit hit&miss arent they?theyve got yr records so they should know whats going on!
Yea think i will memtion the other joint pains
Ive got an almost5yr old dd so need to be100% fit if i can!
What do you think of the link with oa&osteoporosis?
Ive googled it&its not that unusual to be diagnosed with it im yr40s or even younger!
Did you have to ask for the blood tests&xays or were they just done as a matter of course?
I might also mention that they tjknk i may be premeno too as that apparently is limked to getting oa too!

Im 29 and have osteoarthritis in my left knee. This is due to complications with my amputation, I have had to put a lot of extra pressure on that joint as have had years on and off crutches and with chronic pain.
I had an arthroscopy as my knee was giving me problems and the arthritis was diagnosed then.
I am waiting on an x ray on my hip as it hurts and I suspect possible arthritis in one of my wrists.

Sympathies! just wanted you to know there are lots of us about. Plus I have a five yr old too.

Some days are very difficult :(

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 14/09/2013 09:01

My mum was diagnosed with oa in her late 40s in her knees and drs will only give her anti inflammatories too. She's in agony quite often and has found that citrus fruits and white wine make it worse. Luckily she prefers red.Wine

babyjane67 · 14/09/2013 09:20

Thankyou both for yr replies
sorry to hear anout yr amputation frownyface.must be doubly difficult for you
Ive had trouble with my left knee for quite a while&not really dome owt about it but lately the paims got worse&a few times its felt like its sort of slipped over out of joint&also given way couple of times!

I had to ask for investigations, I am on calcium supplements and have had low calcium levels before but not osteoporotic or anything yet.
I think I might be permimenopausal too as they are getting closer together!

babyjane67 · 15/09/2013 07:54

Qod ive beem getting bleeding between periods so have had smear test&pelvic&transvaginal ultrasounds.im waiting for app to see a gyny now.
Ive also got a form of restless legs syndrome whicj was diagmosed after having nerve tests done.the toes on my left foot also flick&jump about as part of it!they hurt sometimes.
I feel like im going off as its been one thing after another the last couple of yrs!lol
So u just asked yr gp for the tests?i asked mine bout doing blood tests for this between bleeding im getting but she just said she didnt think it was worth it!

My right toe joint is enlarged and red on and off and the pain was also on and off and stabbing, and keeps going red

I should add that I started running in January and now do up to 7 miles at a go, and its got worse the further I've run, I also have a history of 3 separate incidents of kidney stones which can have a link with gout.

So he offered blood test, if it was gout, there's a special medication that isn't an anti inflammatory so would have worked with my bypass. Test negative so he arranged X-ray

As I say, technician said oh that's a bunion. But it's not

It was a different GP I saw for the results, and I think I will make sure its the original one when I go back!

I did suffer an injury to that joint about 20 yr ago, stupid giant horse stood on it, and had manipulation under anaesthetic and a load of physio, as the joint was broken and had gone bit splintery and had kind of repaired in a lump. So I guess it's just the passage of time too!

Interestingly, my dad and my sister both have problems with their right big toe :D

QOD · 16/09/2013 19:44

I've spoken to a pharmacist today and have started cod liver oil wee today, she reckons it'll help

babyjane67 · 17/09/2013 10:59

Ah right yes might try that myself!
Its a long time til my physio app!

OP posts:
QOD · 17/09/2013 15:39

Wef today :D

originalpiratematerial · 17/09/2013 15:45

Am reading with interest as my husband was dx'd with advanced osteoarthritis yesterday - he's 47. This came as a real shock to him.

I bought him some of that Jointace stuff - is cod liver oil a better bet?

babyjane67 · 17/09/2013 20:52

Hi original
I think jointace has got cod liver oil in it along with other stuff
I havent actually got owt for it apart from lloyds cream to rub into affected joints
Has yr husband got it in lots of joints?how was he diagnosed?
Qod lol!

OP posts:
QOD · 17/09/2013 20:56

I'm already on calcium and prescription multivitamin and minerals etc so just went for the cod liver oil as extra

originalpiratematerial · 17/09/2013 22:05

He had an MRI scan. He's been in a lot of pain and limping for quite a long time, but thought it was just a lingering football injury. He was seeing a sports physio who prescribed various exercises etc. It's been going on for quite a long time now - about 3.5 years - but he wouldn't go to the GP Hmm

babyjane67 · 18/09/2013 13:51

Have the exercises been helping?
was mri done as a matter of course or did he ask for it?
have they given him any treatment?

OP posts:
originalpiratematerial · 18/09/2013 16:03

I'm not sure about the exercises, as they were prescribed before anyone knew he had osteo-arthritis. He says that some days he feels ok but other days he really feels like his leg might give way completely on the stairs Sad.

I told him to ask the GP to refer him for an MRI scan, I thought he might have something that needed surgery. He's not been offered any treatment as yet and the health centre have apparently lost the physio referral letter Hmm

QOD · 18/09/2013 16:05

I.can.not.stop.farting.

Bloody stupid cod liver oil

Thumbwitch · 18/09/2013 16:12

try some of this stuff. The guy who owns it started off with inflamed big toes through running, martial arts and possible gout - it fixed him up. Read some of the customer reviews - it's very good for joint inflammation and also for muscle recovery after exercise.

It's not cheap but there are places you can get it cheaper (amazon etc.) It does work well though if you take it daily.

babyjane67 · 19/09/2013 11:20

Qod dont think i'll bother with them then!lol
Original they havent offered him a knee replacement yet?i do wonder if im gonna need that myself at some point.my sister whos16yrs older than me had to have a hip replacement at the age of52!dont think theyve ever said if its due to oa or not though they did ask her if she'd been a dancer as there waa alot of wear&tear of the joint for her age!(she never has been by the way!lol)
Thumbwitch thanks for the link.dont think itll do much for me as i dont do sports or exercise!lol
