I am soooooooooo scared

It is right up in the gum and I am being sedated for them to remove it

I think they will be either going in from outside {by the cheek} or from inside the roof of my mouth

Has anyone had it done before?

Please can someone make me feel better about having it done

please tell me I will be ok and what it was like for them

Kanga - I've had impacted teeth removed. I was only 12 though and mine was done under general anaesthetic. They got to the tooth through the roof of my mouth and through the front of my gum above where the canine would be (it was the canine that was impacted).

How impacted is it? Mine was completed within my palate so no way it could be done in the dentist.

ComeOVeneer · 20/06/2006 19:04

You'll be fine. The route they take will depend on the exact position of the tooth but generally it is from the cheek side. With the sedation you'll be much calmer. Do take some arnica for the next few days to speed up the healing and plenty of rinses with hot salt water to keep the area nice and clean. Good luck for tomorrow.

intergalacticwalrus · 20/06/2006 19:05

I had this done to all 4 canine teeth when I was about 15. It wasn't that bad, although eating was a bit of a nightmare for a few days afterwards. To be fair though, I didn't mind too much as I got to eat nice comforting soft stuff like yummy soup and ice cream and mashed potato, although not at the smae time, that would be wrong!

Btw, they did it from inside on me, via the roof of my mouth. I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt afterwards, but it was all quite bearable

Stock up on Hagen Dazs, and you'll be fine!

GDG · 20/06/2006 19:08

Is now a good time to say my face swelled up so that I looked like a hamster too?!

It's not the best thing in the world Kanga, but it wasn't as bad as having wisdom teeth out - for me anyway.

RTKangaMummy · 20/06/2006 19:16

It is totally up there you can feel it under the gum skin if you rub your finger over the area

It doesn't hurt atm

But is having to come out because I am going to have braces fitted

And the roots of the next door teeth go in weird angles around it

I had loads of teeth out as a teenager including my other canine at the top

Crumbs I hadn't thought about swelling

I am been sedated cos it is so far up there

I am having a bottom tooth out at the front as well but am not bothered by that one coming out

On a different note I am going on holiday to Australia and south pacific in about 5 weeks time do you think I will be ok by then?

OP posts:
ComeOVeneer · 20/06/2006 19:18

The arnica will help with the swelling. You'll be fine in 5 weeks. That is the beauty of the mouth, it heals very quickly (much quicker than any other part of the body) .

RTKangaMummy · 20/06/2006 19:19

I am having it done at a dental clinic surgery place that my orthodontist has sent me to

RTKangaMummy · 20/06/2006 19:20

I know I am ignorant but where and what do I do with arnica

And where do I get it from?

Thanks for all your support

For pain relief alter Ibuprofen and paracetamol (take each every 4 hours but stagger them by 2 hours - ie 2 Ibuprofen then two hours later 2 paracetamol then 2 hours after that another 2 Ibuprofen etc - this will maintain a higher level of pain relief in your system iyswim).

ComeOVeneer · 20/06/2006 19:21

Arnica tablets, from Boots/chemist/health shop. Start taking them asap and continue for the next 5-7 days.

RTKangaMummy · 20/06/2006 19:22

I have been given 10 mg diazapam

and 400mg ibuprofen to take an hour before I am done

RTKangaMummy · 20/06/2006 19:23

ComeOVeneer · 20/06/2006 19:23

I assume you have someone to take you there and home again?

intergalacticwalrus · 20/06/2006 19:24

You'll be fine for 5 weeks time RTKM, deffo!!! Grin

intergalacticwalrus · 20/06/2006 19:24

btw, my face didn't swell, so yours might not either.

RTKangaMummy · 20/06/2006 19:25

DH has to take me and home again otherwise they won't sedate me

Then he has to stay with me for 24 hours

i had an impacted wisdom tooth taken out last year and all i can say is that the pain afterwards is nothing like the constant nagging pain i had had for ages. I wished i didn't wait for so long.
Do take mega doses of arnica - it really helps.

Good Luck & Be brave!

RTKangaMummy · 20/06/2006 22:12

Is it over yet? If so I hope it went well, if not "good luck" once again.

ComeOVeneer · 21/06/2006 20:19

Bumping for Kanga, how did it go?

RTKangaMummy · 21/06/2006 21:39

I was supposed to take 30 mins but the operation took over an hour !!!!!!! and it blooming hurt

They sadated me into my vein in my arm and then gave me gas and air through a mask on top of my nose -- it didn't work properly and I could feel it all

They were telling me to take deep breaths through my nose which I really tried to concentrate on doing

And I couldn't talk so I sort of ahhhhhhhhhhh at them

They were saying that they couldn't get hold of it or see it properly

Aparently as they explained afterwards the root was curled into a hook shape and was joined onto my bone

They had to take it out in pieces and it was sort of shattered as they drilled

They have gone very close to my sineses

They told me it was the hardest one they had ever done, it was harder than it looked on the x rays, I have got stitches that should disolve.

I was taken into recovery for another 2 hours

So I have got

500mg amoxocillin &

200mg metronidazole &

6mg dexamethasone &

co-codamol & ibuprofen

They have given me the antibiotics drugs to last for a week but the info sheet says I need them for 2 weeks {cos of the sinuses} so DH is going back tomorrow for some more

A neighbour went to get DS from school cos it had taken so long and I was very wobbly when I got home at lunchtime, she went to get me some heinz spaggetti that was lovely with grated cheese as it feels very weird and swollen inside my mouth, I have been holding frozen peas to my face.

My cheek isn't swollen but the roof of my mouth is and they told me I may be bruised tomorrow.

I have got hargen das icecream as well

Thanks for all your support

Oh you poor honey!

My dentist warned me that my last extraction (third wisdom tooth) would likely be worse than the previous ones (one done at 21 and the other at 30). Something to do with the bone becoming more brittle etc.

Anyway, it was hellish, I ended up at A&E wimpering like a puppy until a lovely nurse stuck a shot of pethidine in my rear !

Take good care of yourself Kanga and if you need stronger pain relief, make sure you get it.

RTKangaMummy · 21/06/2006 21:58

Thanks puff

DH is doing a deffo brill job with my drugs chart

Bringing me my drugs at the correct times

We are going to set the alarm for 1.40 am

cos the nurse said that to keep the pain killers topped up will be better than having a big time lapse and then taking them iyswim

He took today off work and is taking tommorrow off as well so he can look after me

DS lost one of his molar teeth this evening as well -- he is 11

I am 39 {40 in 3 weeks time so I guess that wouldn't help matters}

I am bleeding quite a bit and they have given me gauze pads to bit on

OP posts:
puff · 22/06/2006 09:18

good advice from the nurse as it maintains the pain relief rather than allowing it to dip down. I know some people might think it's only a tooth, but boy they can cause some serious pain!

How are you feeling today?

RTKangaMummy · 22/06/2006 12:05

I am feeling better today

Unfortunatley I wasn't able to have painkillers during the night cos it would have taken me over the limit

SO I had them at 6.30 this morning

I didn't go to bed until late as I was feeling very sick, I had to put a big book behind me and a pillow as I was told not to lie on my back so I was on my side all night

I have used the mouthwash that they gave me this morning and it tastes VILE!!!!!!!!

I am swollen alot inside my mouth and my cheek is swollen but not too much.

I have had some of my hargan daz this morning

I am eating yoghurt and heinz tomato spagetti as well
