Fish Oil: Oh great..I've just spent £7.55 on some Tesco orange flavour chewy omega 3 capsules...

..And they all hate them. They do look a bit like tough old baked beans actually.

Dd says the liquid middle isn't too bad but she can't stand the 'chewy' outside which looks like a piece of rubber (I don't blame her) Littlest dd wouldn't touch it at all.

Does anyone know if any of the vitamin value is held in the chewy coating? I was thinking maybe I could just squirt the middles out.

No solution to offer here. I always hear how great fish oils are for kids, but I've yet to find a way of getting it down them. And must admit, I've tried many of the various capsules myself, and they taste foul!

TinyGang · 18/06/2006 09:14

Oh dear I didn't anticipate this. They were all sealed up when I bought them - I thought they'd be like little orange jellies or something.

I must admit they don't smell too good. I can't bring myself to chew one either. I might swallow one if pushed, but they're not for me - I bet I wouldn't be able to get them to swallow a capsule, they're too young.

Think they do these in liquid form - might be easier. Quick spoonful then a drink of juice.

threebob · 18/06/2006 09:20

They are from Tesco - take them back, tell them they are inedible and not what you expected and you can have your money back.

TinyGang · 18/06/2006 09:22

Do you reckon they would take them back? I'd be happy to get a different thing instead. Might be worth a try.

Remember Maureen Lipman taking back a fish because she didn't like the look on it's face?

My mum takes back all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons. Just say you want to change it - and it should be fine.

trinityrhino · 18/06/2006 09:37

take it back, they will have to

we had the same from tesc and dd1 thought they were vile
There is some liquid that my dd thinks is yummy so keep trying

TinyGang · 18/06/2006 09:48

Nope..I've just phoned them and they've told me I cannot return them as they have been opened.

The thing is there was a seal over the top, so I couldn't see or smell how un-appetising they were until I opened them up. Letter to head office perhaps? I'm not looking forward to this -I'm still a bit bruised from a recent dust up with Asda over some trainers, which I finally won. I'm starting to look like a serial 'taker-backer'Grin

Trinityrhino - just out of interest, which is the liquid your dd likes? Maybe I could look out for it.

Gawd I wish I'd never started on this. I keep hearing how good these oils are - dh would be in shock if I told him how much they cost, so I haven't! Mind you my children seem to fire on 10 cylinders each as it is - I wonder whether fish oils would send them into orbit.

Haliborange

High DHA Concentration
Omega-3 Fish Oil

DeliciousOrange Flavour syrup for kids

vitomum · 18/06/2006 09:52

ds won't chew these either so i use liquid flaxseed oil - full of all the omegas too. It has a very slightly nutty taste so is easier to slip into foods - can drizel a bit into most savory stuff, i even put it in his porridge.

BagelBird · 18/06/2006 09:53

Don’t try the EyeQ capsules either then - they have a tough rubbery coating with liquid in - mine hate them. It was also a massive waste of cash.
Have you tried Boots vitamin gummy bears? They are fab. They come in a box full of little packets of 5 gummy bears, packed full of vitamins. Mine love them, only prob is trying to convince them they only have one packet a day. Kept well out of reach and worth every penny :)

TinyGang · 18/06/2006 09:53

Ooh thanks to you bothSmile - they sound much better. I wish I'd asked on here first before I'd bought these.

I bought similar capsules for ds2 - he also hated the plastic coating. I've since bought the liquid and he is taking that every morning without complaining. Just ran downstairs to check and it is the Haliborange make.

BagelBird · 18/06/2006 09:56

Blush - of course, those don’t contain the fish oils but at least deals with the vitamins side of it all! I use mixed seeds in salads/couscous etc and flaxseed oil for the omega 3 stuff. Mine hate oily fish so resort to other measures. I belive that EyeQ have done a jelly bean red sweetie version of the capsule but haven’t tried it yet

Gloworm · 18/06/2006 10:11

I own a health shop and we have found that Eskimo kids has proven to be the most popular taste wise, its tutti frutti, smells like bubblegum to me, but no sugar or artifical sweetners.
you only need to take 1 teaspoon per day.

eyeQ vanilla liquid gets good feedback too. they do squeezy fruity sachets too but we havent sold many yet, so no feedback on them yet.

I also like the Smartfish ones, thay come in individual sachets, paste/butter-like consistency and orange flavour. we have given out quite a few free samples of these and most kids seem to like it as it doesnt have the oily feel of the liquid.

we dont sell any of the chewy capsules, although we had been thinking about getting some in...will have to have a rethink after some of your experiences with them.

By the way I wouldnt recommend the haliborange ones, to the best of my knowledge they are full of aspartame, which is proven to lower concentration levels (isnt it banned by the american airforce for this reason?)

hope that helps Smile

TinyGang · 18/06/2006 10:34

Thank you Gloworm - very useful post. Thank you all for your help.

Aaargh! Why oh why didn't I tap into this before I went and bought them?! Never mind, you live and learn I guessSmile

You don't phone - of course they'll say no.

You go and make them smell them and tell them you want your money back.

Enid · 18/06/2006 10:52

the eye q vanilla liquid is vile

we don't bother and settle for duffer children

works out much cheaper that way Wink

Love the idea of making them smell them. I have this vision of me getting the customer service woman in a headlock and making her eat oneGrin

I buy Boots fish oils for mine....'smart omega 3 fish oils'. found in the kiddies pharmacy bit, has a cerise pink label on a brown bottle.
Tis liquid, and tastes like creamy orange chewits:)...all kiddies like and it is suitable for 2+yrs. There is an older kiddies one that is strawberry flavour (5+yrs I think).

did wonders for my boys and never had a complaint from them (or the girlsWink). also, boots sometimes do a two for three deal on their kiddies medicines (not the one behind the counter tho I think), which is when I stock up.

HTH:)

LIZS · 18/06/2006 11:44

ds was liek that over the Efalex ones to begin with but he eventually got the hang of them. he did crack the outer and suck the liquid out but think it is the contents not the outer which counts.

threebob · 18/06/2006 20:06

if the customer service lady says no then ask to see the manager. that always works for my mum.

mummysandy · 20/06/2006 14:05

Hi TinyGang

The chewy outside is just something to keep the oil in according to the label on the ones i use so if they really won't take them back I guess you could pierce them - although that would be rather messy!

I know which ones you mean when you say they look like 'tough old baked beans' and I think they may be the ones that Gloworm refers to as containing aspartame.
