2 wks ago dd had a temp for 6 days, rash over body, glands in the back of her neck were up (still are in fact) and she had (and still has) a chesty cough with a few white spots on her tongue. I took her to the doctors twice, both times (different doctors) said nothing to worry about they checked her over and both said its a viral inf, and that the rash could last for 2-3 weeks....

3 days ago, her hands started to peel, starting at the finger tips and now they are peeling all over her hands, tonight i decide to google and up comes \link{http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/heart/kawasaki.html\Kawasaki Syndrome} and now i am really worried....can anyone offer any advice about her peeling hands which can set our minds at rest.

tia

What a worry greyriver. Can't give any advice. Definitely worth taking her back to GP.

robinpud · 14/06/2006 20:39

greyriver- I would take child to hospital striaght away and ask them to rule out kawaskai syndrome and whilst they decide to give her the does of aspirin that they would give a chil with Ks. A friend of mine has this and the finger peeling is a clear sign. Your child need aspirin and a medical expert now.

robinpud · 14/06/2006 20:42

I don't want to panic you, but really think it is worth going to hospital please, tonight if you can get. The sooner that you get the right treatment the better.
Please let me know how you get on.
Kawaski is very rare, GPs often misdiagnose and symptoms go unnoticed.

foxinsocks · 14/06/2006 20:43

have you looked at scarlet fever? ds supposedly had this and had peeling on his fingers (and a red rash)

jstbcs · 14/06/2006 20:44

Streph throat can cause this, u need swab asap!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/06/2006 22:14

Scarlet fever which is a complication of strep throat can make the hands and feet peel. Ds1 had it at about age 5. Was the rash sandpapery?

robinpud · 14/06/2006 22:24

Ok, so now I look like a panic merchant. My experience is confined to a friend whose dd now has kawasaki syndrome because it was not picked up,Sad and a Paedeatrician ( terrible sp I know!) friend who says it is often mistaken for scarletina. I just know that as soon as the peeling was metioned to the Gp, they did take it seriously. Good luck.. I am sure I am just being over cautious.

greyriver · 15/06/2006 16:32

thankyou robinpud

Just back from Hospital about 30 mins ago, DD was admitted last night after we took her to A&E as the emergency doc that saw her thought her symtpoms looked like KS, spent the night on the childrens ward and by 4am this morning DD had been fully tested....she must be a strong little thing because she has an ear inf, strep (cockle??? cant remeber how he pronounced it) throat inf and Water infection Sad which have all develepod since last taking her to the doctors Sad a week ago. They have taken the peeling very seriously and she is booked in for an Echo vision scan on monday, the pead said all the symtoms point to KS exccept she hasnt suffered from the red eyes and usually KS sufferers are very very unhappy and irritable (at which point DD was smiling at him as though he was the best thing she had ever seen....) her blood tests were clear from lots of white cells, but apparanlty this can happen if a KS patient is in the recovery stages, still quite ambigous but they are going to double check DD's heart and arteries for damage and inflammation.....all seems so surreal one minute i was googling 'toddlers peeling hands' & the next i am at a&e.....

just wanted to thank you robinpud, you werent over reacting, if anyting i feel really crap that i didnt take DD"s peeling hands more seriuosly, i guess i always worry gp's etc think i am an overreacting mother etc etc...
thank goodness for the internet and sites like this.

greyriver- I have just rushed home from work to watch football and see to kids, but have come straight up here to see how she was. I am so glad that she is getting good care and my fingers are crossed that there is no residual damage to her heart and arteries. I did lie in bed thinknig I might have put the wind up you unnecessarily and that you would be mad as hell. I am not one to over react but know sadly what ks can mean.
Please keep me posted about her progress. I hope you are ok, I know I feel grim when the kids aren't well.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/06/2006 17:32

Greyriver - glad the docs took you seriously. And well done robinpud - it's always a fine line between scaring the hell out of someone or quietly worrying but saying nothing.

Hope all the tests come back clear. Let us know won't you?

LIZS · 15/06/2006 17:34

Hopefully it is just a side effect of the strep throat, although all those things together must be very miserable.Sad

Marina · 15/06/2006 17:35

Yes, keep us posted Greyriver and hoping for the best of outcomes for you :).
You were absolutely right to suggest Kawasaki robinpud and if I had seen the thread I'd have mentioned it too (although without what I fear is your personal knowledge of it robin).

sparklemagic · 15/06/2006 18:15

errr, I shouldn't do this I know as am a bit of a mad worrier about health, but my DS had slightly peeling fingers a few weeks ago which have now cleared up completely.

He had a mild virus which was put down as a reaction to his booster jabs, had a rash which the dr said can be a common side effect of the whooping cough vaccine....but he was not feverish, didn't have red eyes...the peeling was on his fingers only and was not bad, only small amounts....

as I say it is now gone and he is recovered...but the peeling hands thing worries me, what do you think?

robinpud · 15/06/2006 18:24

sparkle, I am sure NHS direct will be quiet at the moment so if you are concerned why not speak to them and let them run it through their screens and see what their advice is. My only knowledge of peeling hands is in connection with the high temperatures and general unwellness which is indicative of kawasaki syndrome. As you can see from the thread there are other people whose chidren have peeling hands with no other issues. Get some expert advice to allay your fears and let us know how you get on.

greyriver · 15/06/2006 22:13

thanks everyone for your advice and concern, I will let you all know how we get on at the scan on monday, fingers and everything else possible will be crossed.... tonight however has been the worst of our life, DD collapsed on the floor (she's 16mo btw) and had a ferible convulsion, it was the scariest thing i have ever seen, DH is still crying on and off about it because he can't get her limp and blue little face out of his head, what a day. We called an ambulance and they said it was due to her ear infection and throat inf etc and a sudden spike in temp, we have also called the childrens ward we were on today and last night and they too have said the same thing..,....what a day my god, still seems like some bad dream at the moment...Sad

sparklemagic i have seen around 9 docs's in the past 24hrs and all have stressed the importance of a high temp lasting for more than 6/7 days consistantly when KS is present, but as robin says do whatever you need to do to put your mind at rest hth xx
Going to take my tired self and swollen crying eyes off to bed now, thanks again everyone xx

greyriver- poor poor you and poor poor dd. What a horrible thing it is to happen, but they are common in small children and many of them only have 1 so let's hope that she gets better as the infection clears up. Sleep as well as you can and lots of hugs to you. Keep us posted.

hub2dee · 15/06/2006 22:44

Hi grey, sorry to read about your very very scary day, and dd's illness. Hope the infections respond really well and that she bounces back very quickly. Both you and dh must have been petrified, especially with the prior hossie visit etc. Take care and hope things improve a lot tomorrow.

sparklemagic · 19/06/2006 09:35

greyriver, thinking of you today, hope all is well and that you can all forget about this horrible time as soon as possible.

and thanks for your thoughts, also robinpud - I have recovered from my bout of hypochondria-by-proxy!!!!! Sure DS is fine, he had no temperature to speak of at all and the nurse at our surgery said his rash was typical of a reaction to the jab....I think I am one of those people who invents things to worry about Blush

Let us know how things are greyriver. x

robinpud · 19/06/2006 09:48

greyriver- thinking of you and will check in later and see what the news is. Everything crossed for you.

sparklemagic- I am so glad it was nothing too serious and that ds is fine. All parents worry, we all know how easy it is to get too worried.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 19/06/2006 10:11

Hope it's all good news today greyriver.

greyriver · 19/06/2006 13:17

Well a big sigh of relief!! DD's heart was fine Smile Smile Smile The echo cardiogram which she had done this morning showed nothing, just a healthy beating heart. She laid there as good as gold bless her,Doc also checked over her ear/throat inf and said they are on the mend too and no more sign of infection. yesterday DD had an allergic reaction to Penecillin, so we have had to stop giving her that. Doc said we will never know for sure whether it was Kawasake she had or not (as she was tested too late and she was already in the recovery stages) but eitherway if it was Kawasake it hasn't damaged her heart which of course is the main thing.

Thanks everyone for your support and help Smile And Robinpud thanks again for posting, a thank you doesnt even come close when its our lo's health on the line...your words of wisdom are what prompted us to go to A&E in the 1st place Smile

Don't know who you are and where you are but have really thought a lot about you so am just really really glad you can enjoy your little one- hope she continues to get better and not be grouchy.Smile

sparklemagic · 19/06/2006 18:04

hurray, so glad she's all clear, just what I was hoping to hear and bless her for being so good at the hosp.!

claireh11 · 19/06/2006 21:02

Hi my son had this few weeks ago and it was scarlett fever. Look it up on NHS website. It states that once rash has cleared up hands and feet will peel which his did do for quite a while. He has also now developed eczema from it drying out his skin.
