Waiting for breast core biopsy results.....

reallyreallyworried · 07/08/2013 16:24

Hi, have name changed.

I found a slight hardening on one side of my breast a couple of weeks ago. Saw GP who referred me to the breast clinic.

Had my appointment on Monday. Doctor couldn't feel anything but suggested a mammogram and ultrasound scan. Mammogram showed something, so the ultrasound lady did a core biopsy.

I was then sent back to waiting room to see the first Doctor again. This is the bit I am slightly worried about. She called me in, said we found something and have done the biopsy, results should be in by Friday! That was it? Didn't say what they had found, or how worried they were, OR not worried.

The more I think about it, the more worried I am getting. Should I assume the fact she didn't have much to say is a good thing? Or not!

Think I am probably just over thinking things, because I am starting to get really worried. Any wise words of wisdom gratefully received.

Xx

ANYONE! Confused

Bless you the waiting is the worst bit, don't forget most people who go about things like this are ok and it turns out to be nothing sinister. Try not to let your mind imagine all the worst case scenarios
Let us know how you get on

Thanks malteserzz for the kind and reassuring words.

My DD was recalled after her 1st ever mammogram and was shown the image which was a cluster of calcified cells. She had 5 biopsies on the Monday and Thursday they phoned her to say they were all benign.
There was no lump. Everything was explained to her though before the biopsies.
Good luck

jchocchip · 08/08/2013 06:11

Yes what malt said chances are its benign. But even if its not chances are that it is easily treatable. I had a lump removed two years ago. It hadn't spread anywhere, had radiotheraphy to be on safe side and now on tamoxofen for five years.

reallyreallyworried · 08/08/2013 07:02

Thankyou for sharing your experiences.

I was doing very well at carrying on as normal, and trying not to think about it. But this week seems to be going REALLY slowly. I just want to get the results, so I can move on.

I'm trying to stay positive. Have read lots about how the majority of breast lumps are benign. But then I think maybe I should also prepare myself for bad news! Although I'm not sure that is something you can prepare for.

Anyway another day begins! Just one more sleep ( or sleepless night ) before my results.

Thanks again for the supportive words. It's exactly what I needed to hear.

How did it go OP?

reallyreallyworried · 09/08/2013 23:23

So sadly I have cancer Sad

Now for the positives, it has been caught early. They want to do a lumpectomy and remove some lymph nodes. Then do a course of radiotherapy.

Breast care nurse was amazing and so kind. I feel a bit numb and not sure how I should be feeling. I wasn't upset or angry at the news, just numb. Think weirdly enough my biggest concern is I don't want to be away from work Sad

Think I just need some time for the news to sink in.

Thanks for asking.

Xxx

So sorry to hear that OP. I know it's probably so easy for me to be glib about it but it could have been so, so much worse. What a crock of shite though, so sorry. Wine and a big bubble bath for you, and I prescribe not too much time alone with your thoughts for now! Flowers

IamtheZombie · 10/08/2013 00:10

Zombie was diagnosed with breast cancer 21 months ago. It was advanced. She had just finished her treatments. Her consultant oncologist is certain that she is now cancer free. Never, ever give up hope.

MCos · 10/08/2013 00:17

Hi OP, we are in the exact same boat. I got same news today. Also caught early, and will have lump removed & corresponding lymph note removed. Hopefully in next 2 weeks. Followed up by Radiothearphy

It is genetic in my family, so not huge surprise. Not diagnosed as BRAC, but family history would indicate heavy genetic disposition towards Breast Cancer

But still, pretty shocking for me personally.

Best of luck to you. X your fingers for me too!

Calmonthesurfacebut · 10/08/2013 01:14

Hi

Read your post earlier and checked back today, sorry it wasn't better news, but thankfully it sounds like it has been caught early. Crap isn't it.

I had a routine mammogram resulting in a core biopsy three weeks ago and they think it is Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia (ADH), which is pre cancerous and probably nothing to worry about, but am going in on Tues for a general and some sort of radiation injection that show the abnormal cells with a Geiger counter!!!! so they can be removed for further testing. (anyone experience of this?).

I felt a bit numb and out of it when they told me too, and mine looks reasonably positive, so can imagine what is going through your mind.

I think once they tell you what the plan is, it feels a lot better, as you can do something about it then. I would say try to keep busy too and yes, I know lots of people who had had similar diagnosis and are clear now.

Best of luck to you too MCos.

reallyreallyworried · 10/08/2013 05:28

Thankyou for the lovely replies.

MCos sending you a huge hug. I wish you well in your journey. Hopefully we can stay in touch on our journey through this? Thanks

My parents are here at the moment, I think they are feeling as shocked as I am. I have next week off work so am going to go and spend some time with them.

Just have to wait for date for the surgery. Nothing else I can do before then. Just keep smiling and keep reminding myself that this isn't the end of the world. It's just one of lives little hiccups!! Although a fairly shit and scary one.

Sorry to hear your news really and mcos and calm. I agree, it is one of life's hiccups and you will get through treatment and be back at work sooner than you think. I'm two years down the road and definitely it was a blip. I had 4 months off work but I know some work through treatment. The lumpectomy/ sentinel node biopsy was routine and didn't take long for scars to heal. Tiring travelling to radio appointments everday but it did mean I got my Christmas shopping done early that year...
((hugs)) for you - I prescribe Wine and chocolate.

malteserzz · 10/08/2013 07:59

Sorry to hear your news
Do come over to the tamoxifen thread, I was dx in may and have had a lumpectomy and have just started chemo. It does help to talk to people who are going through or have gone through the same thing as sometimes you want to protect your family from how you feel and they don't always understand anyway !
Thinking of all of you who have had bad news x

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/08/2013 13:58

really and calm you might find the tamoxifen thread helpful and reassuring- calm the op you mention sounds like sentinel node biopsy, which is an injection of radioactive marker which the surgeon finds by mini geiger counter in the first (sentinel) nodes(s) in armpit. This saves whipping a whole load out to test for an invasion. The scar is small but can be hugely irritation because of rubbing.
As malt and jchoc have said, catching breast cancer at this stage is very good and treatment is relatively easy.
tamoxifen is here !
