Fasting to Cure Diarrhea - Help!

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 07:09

Ok, I have had diarrhea since Sundayish. It has gotten worse and worse. I haven't eaten anything since yesterday morning. (Before that, I was mostly having v simple foods, anyway, and not much.)

I haven't even had juice or tea, just water. Nothing else.

I still have diarrhea. Not loads of it, but certainly some.

Do I eat now? Do I keep fasting until the diarrhea stops? Do I have some diluted apple juice?

I feel pretty wobbly (shocker) and my abdomen is pretty tender, but the GP checked me yesterday, and thinks this is just a viral thing.

I am just teasing you - you are a poor old thing today, that's for sure.

I'm glad he has been able to help with the boys today, at least.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 08:35

Oh, I have grubby UHT type juice, not nice juice.

But will maybe try dioralyte later in the day, we have some in the medicine cabinet.

Oh, great, there's a neighbour shouting at the builders at the moment. They've been good about not starting before 8am. It's not someone I know, and I'm staying well away.

he has spent the last 2 day asking plaintively why he has got chickenpox (actually yesterday he seemed a bit better). It is pretty difficult persuading him to let me comb his hair though because he has spots there too. Am ignoring the lice for the moment just making sure the rest of us don't have them. Actually I got them from snuggling up with him for couple of hours on Sunday - we drove through the night to get home - but seem clear now - Monday was not a good day - stomach bug, chickenpox and headlice - and twins off playgroup in case they had chickenpox as well (have decided that joy comes in about 2 weeks time !). It was supposed to be a day off work recovering from the holiday and the journey with kids at school and playgroup Sad.

DumbledoresGirl · 08/06/2006 08:40

Oh just come back to this. Sorry, NQC, with your symptoms, no I wouldn't eat either. Your situation sounds very much like mine (well your dh's I mean) and if I felt like you, I would have dh at home, no matter how high powered his job is. But then I am phobic about it all. You are doing very well, managing, by the sounds of it.

Bugsy2 · 08/06/2006 09:21

I had gastro enteritus around Easter time & it took 3 weeks for me to shift it (I did lose a whole stone though!!!! Grin
I fasted but I also took dioralyte relief. Don't take any of the evil immodium type things as that just keeps all the evil poison inside you.
I ate minute quantities of rich tea & boiled rice. I also sucked sweets for a bit of sugar & drank ribena.
I had such awful cramps that I was advised to take buscopan, that people with IBS take and that really seemed to help.
Hope you feel better soon. Be patient though & don't rush the food.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 09:31

I am feeling a bit better now, but have decided not to consider eating until noon, just in case. (And when I do eat, it will be a few spoonsful of applesauce, or maybe half a slice of toast.)

The builders are all over the place, I'm thinking about trying to sleep in DS1's room as it's higher up, and further away from the flat roof.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 11:41

I now have less nausea, but more abdominal pain.

I think I will try to eat 1/2 a slice of white toast with honey, and wait an hour or two to see what happens.

I really cannot wait to feel better.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 08/06/2006 11:47

glad you're feeling a bit better - is there anything you can do to distract yourself? MN obviously, but I find a good book (that I can take to loo if neccesary) is good.
Or weren't you one oo the ones writing the Great 21stC novel? Wink

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 11:50

I'm having a hard time focussing. Should probably just put telly on.

Builders everywhere aren't helping, either.

OP posts:
throckenholt · 08/06/2006 12:29

have you got any chocolate ? I started with a couple of chunks with that last night - figured it would give me a sugar boost but would not be too much volume if it reactivated the bug.

I am feeling much better now - so hopefully you will be too soon.

Bugsy2 · 08/06/2006 12:44

Glad the chocolate appeared to work for you Throckenholt but generally if you have a very upset stomach you shouldn't touch anything fatty as it is much harder to digest.
If you need a sugar hit, eat sweets or drink diluted apple juice or fruit squashes.
Coffee has a bowel stimulating effect to, so you should avoid that as well.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 13:26

Yeah, I'm avoiding fat, caffeine, spices, and fibre.

The slice of toast with honey hasn't made me feel worse, and hasn't provoked any explosions (it's been more than an hour now) so I am now going to work my way through a v. large banana.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 08/06/2006 13:31

are you still taking the codiene, honestly it cured me!!!

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 14:17

Only taking codeine to help me sleep. Not taking much meds now, anyway, as the fever has mostly stopped.

Anyway, the banana and the toast went down fine. I'll continue eating small quantities of v. safe foods (BRAT, basically), for how long? 24 hours? 48?

OP posts:
chapsmum · 08/06/2006 14:23

24 hours and then gradula introductin of opther things. Once you have been squit free for 24 hours you should definatly be over the worst of it. Poor soul!

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 14:33

I'm only a few hours squit-free, really, but at least food has gone in and not exited quickly.

Ok, 24 hours of BRAT, and then real food. Sounds survivable. I'm cheating by adding honey, might add salt, too. But no fat, dairy, fibre, spice or booze.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 14:35

Is it reasonable for me to expect to lead a normal life tomorrow? School run etc? I'm trying to let DH off the hook. DS1 will be at school, DS2 will be at the co-op, so it's just a fair bit of walking, nothing more onerous.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 08/06/2006 14:39

you will be knackred. your body has used up alot of its energy reserves and so you may be able to do it but you would feel really drained and unwell after. give yourself as much rest as you can.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 14:42

Maybe I'll try to opt out of the morning run, and just do the later two.

I'm not short of reserves, anyway, at least, so I'm not exactly wasting away. And I can try to take it really easy this weekend.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 17:03

Hmm, have had a few bouts of somewhat-squittishness, but I think it's mostly just gas. The difficult bit is, my abdomen really hurts. It's a bit tender, too. Coughing hurts etc. I guess I'll be taking drugs to help me sleep, again.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 17:14

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. I still have bad diarrhea. Do I have to do 24 hours again? I think I will get lemonade, at least, to boost my energy a bit.

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 08/06/2006 17:36

NQC you still filling the drains? You poor thing. But it does sound better if you managed to eat something without it coming out the other end straightaway. I would say at this stage, if you are still wanting to eat, do so, but keep to the BRAT things.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 19:21

Not sure I do feel like eating. Well, ok, the pizza that everyone else had for dinner smells great, but given it has fat + dairy, not actually an option.

I don't know what to do. I'm really really really fucked off. I have somewhat bad abdominal pain.

On the good side, though, I have the house mostly to myself tomorrow, other than builders. I have sorted out everything for the kids tomorrow except for DS1's trip home. DS2 didn't hate the Evil Nursery, and anyway, DH said the ratio was like 4 carers to 5 kids, so maybe it's fine when it's not the holidays. (I lie, they gave him quavers, but whatever.) He's going back there tomorrow, anyway, as it is free (paid for by DH's work) and right next to DH's work.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 08/06/2006 20:12

I'm really getting down, which always happens when I'm this ill. I was so sure I was getting better!

I've had a big glass of dioralyte, which hasn't made me feel worse. I do want real food, damnit, but don't think it would be wise.

Actually, I want (tinned) cream of tomato soup. I want a grilled cheese sandwich. I want crappy pudding cups. I want tapioca crappy pudding cups. I want hot dogs.

Luckly, I can't get any of those here, so there's no risk of me eating them. (And DH would disapprove, shockingly. Annoying sensible person that he is.)

I did actually get through a (milder) tummy bug, last time in Canada, living on crappy pudding cups.

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 08/06/2006 20:38

Enlighten me, what are pudding cups?
