Just routinely prodding around last night and found a hard small lump deep down in my left breast. I know statistically it's likely to be nothing but am panicking! Going to see gp this afternoon but handholding would be helpful :))

It appears to be kind of attached to a larger firm thing??? I am 37 btw

I found a lump last year and it did turn out to be nothing sinister. Didn't stop me having a right old worry. You're doing exactly the right thing by seeing your GP. Good luck.

Kenworthington · 28/05/2013 12:14

Thanks bookie :) stayed wake half the flipping night worrying about it then the other half bloody dreaming about it! The whole boob feels generally a whole lot firmwr and lumpier than the other one but in finding it hard to find the hard lump now (prob due to continually prodding and poking it!)

Meant to add glad to hear yours turned out to be nothing. Did you get referred to the hospital?

SacreBlue · 28/05/2013 12:15

Normal to worry, and ditto to going to GP :)

My aunt has had numerous benign lumps so not necessarily anything sinister but good on you for checking because even if it is something else you are getting it checked as soon as and that is always a good thing

Kenworthington · 28/05/2013 12:17

I think I'm just panicking cos my mum has had breast cancer (adoptive not biological mum) but its just a bit close to home!

Have a hand. I have also been to the breast clinc this year with a lump. I had a physical exam, mammogram and ultrasound and two cysts were found. Get it checked out, as you are doing, and don't spend the next couple of weeks until your clinic appointment googling.

Take care.

BookieMonster · 28/05/2013 12:18

I'm in Oz so not sure of the NHS procedure. I was referred straight away for a mammogram and an ultrasound. I can't imagine for one minute that your GP would not suggest a mammogram, but I'd insist on a referral.

Kenworthington · 28/05/2013 12:21

I have a feeling you get referred within 2 weeks. Am now weirdly fretting she might not find it and think I'm some kind of crazy hypochondriac . Stupid eh? It's def there but am now having trouble finding it myself. Did get dh to feel too. Which was not the kind of feel he was prob hoping for as I strode towards him with my banjos out lol Grin

Referral to the breast clinic is automatic I think, I don't think you'll need to fight for it.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 28/05/2013 12:23

I've been twice with lumps, referred within a week each time. Had a biopsy the first time but just a scan 2nd time. I know it's not nice but best check to be sure. Everyone I dealt with was so lovely Smile

malteserzz · 28/05/2013 12:34

You should be referred within 2 weeks, I couldn't wait and went private and got an appointment for mammogram and biopsy the same day. Mine was bad news but something like 9 out of 10 lumps are fine so I was unlucky. Good luck

AmIDoingThisRight · 28/05/2013 12:42

Could have typed your post Kenworthington word for word. Also found a lump last night when I was having a supposedly relaxing bath - appt this evening and am sick with worry. Whole breast feels tender. Just wanted to let you know I know exactly what you're going through.

Thinking of you both. Xxxxx

Kenworthington · 28/05/2013 16:10

Well I went and...... She couldn't find it Hmm. I know I should be pleased but I don't feel like it's either good or bad news . It was def there, I felt it, dh felt it. She was v lovely though and said well she couldn't do anything about it at the moment but if I felt it again I was to go straight back. Thank you for all the hand holding x

I started a similar thread this morning but then deleted. I found a lump on Friday night. It's been a long weekend but I managed to get in to the doctor's today.

Glad that you had a good experience (if you see what you mean). Were you asked to go back in a couple of weeks, at another stage in your cycle?

Hey AmI, let us know how it goes. I found the waiting hard, but the doctor's appointment easy. Hope you find it the same.

Kenworthington · 28/05/2013 17:52

Hi vivacia
She said to keep checking over my next cycle and at different times. She said cysts can sometimes appear and disappear with af, and mine came on this afternoon! So hopefully it's just that, fairly sore from all the kneading and prodding now! I just need to go straight back in if I feel it again but she won't refer unless she personally can feel anything out of the ordinary.

Poor you having to wait that long weekend I would have gone crazy! Has your doctor referred you? Or do you need to go back again? X

Well done you K for getting it seen to - just been to my doc and he thinks it's hormonal changes but has asked me to get mammogram appointment and ultrasound to rule anything sinister out.

Waiting is the definitely hardest bit though.

Good luck too Vivacia - seems we're in good company! Xx

Earnshaw · 28/05/2013 20:15

My lump started out as a whopper, appearing very suddenly. It started to decrease in size when my period started 4 days later, after I'd seen the gp, and by the time I went to the clinic, it was as you described upthread - a bit elusive and more of a lumpiness than a distinct lump. The surgeon and I could feel the difference between it and the other breast though and the ultrasound showed the cysts clearly.

Three months later, I've had no recurrence of the large lump - I'm approaching the menopause and my periods are a bit erratic in timing and symptoms; this seems to have been a random symptom.

Nip back to the gp asap if it comes back so you can get it checked out and your mind put at rest.

Vivacia · 28/05/2013 20:28

(I never come across "hand holding" on a forum before, I quite like the sentiment!).

I found the examination really okay. I was more self conscious about my tummy than my breasts. He got one of the nurses in to chaperone. It didn't take as long as I'd read it might (3 minutes), and he didn't ask me to raise my arms above or behind my head (another thing I'd read). All-in-all it was far better than I could have imagined it.

I feel less relaxed about the chance of a biopsy mind.

Schmoozer · 29/05/2013 21:30

Me too :(
Lump found last week,
Waiting for clinic appt. now.
The waiting is so, so stressful,
Best of luck to the others here waiting too x

Vivacia · 06/06/2013 08:15

Just wondering how everyone's doing. I had to delay my scans until next week as I'm away with work.

AmIDoingThisRight · 06/06/2013 21:00

Found out all is well - just hormonal imbalance and nothing to worry about.Everyone was very thorough and reassuring. I really hope you get good news Vivacia and Schmoozer. The waiting is just awful - I know what you're going through. X

smee · 07/06/2013 16:37

9 out of 10 referrals are benign and even if it's bad news, there's lots of us who've been through and out the other side. Breast Cancer's a sod and a half, but quite often these days it's treatable. Smile
