i changed by dd's (19 months) nappy at the weekend and i honestly thought she had sat in a pile of sugar. her nappy was full of what looked like large granulated sugar crystals. anyone know reason. i did give her honey on toast the day before, but am i being daft to make a connection? it looked pretty weird and i was a bit alarmed

Its just when the nappy gets really wet (like an over night one) its part of the inside leaking out :)

Kelly1978 · 23/05/2006 11:36

if it is a well known brand you can complain and you might get sent vouchers.

lucykate · 23/05/2006 11:37

used to get taht happen alot with huggies, swapped to tesco own now.

Orlando · 23/05/2006 11:37

It's silica gel. It's the stuff they put inside the nappy to absorb all the wee. I bet it was a reeeeally wet nappy when you took it off!

PinkTulips · 23/05/2006 11:39

yup, eveytime i need to put a disposable on dd overnight it does this. if you'd looked closely you'd have seen a tear in the lining if the nappy that thye were all spilling out off. thye stick like glue too! makes me even more of a cotton nappy fan

AllieBongo · 23/05/2006 11:40

huggies do this!

mommie · 23/05/2006 11:48

ah..so that is what it was. how gross. they were huggies, yes, tho haven't had a problem before now. might switch to asda or tesco's as suggested.

Papmpers baby dry and active fit also do this so I reckon it is all nappies.

lucykate · 23/05/2006 11:50

tesco's own are brill, cheaper than huggies or pampers. go for the super fit ones. i've never used asda's own personally but there are other mnetters who have. you can buy even cheaper ones from lidl or aldi, they both do own brands too which are also supposed to be quite good quality.

Tatties · 23/05/2006 12:10

Before converting to cloth I found Pampers and Huggies terrible for this. Huggies especially, the crystals would be there at every nappy change, not just in the morning Shock Tesco's own brand were fine but cloth is even better Smile

katiebl · 23/05/2006 12:20

I found pampers active fit the only ones that don't do this with my lo. Tescos just exploded within about 1/2 hour of us putting them on him and we took them back and complained. Huggies are a bit better but not as good as the pampers. Mind you my ds does drink up to 3 litres a day! Sometimes I wish they'd just leak rather than burst cos those crystals are a bugger to clear up - even our hoover doesn't pick them up. Takes me ages on my hands and knees - I'd prefer the washing.

mommie · 23/05/2006 13:14

and there i was thinking it was the honey on toast and thinking it must have created a little honeycomb in her tummy Blush. that's first time mums for you. Smile

I think it's called sodium polyacrylate but don't quote me. It's not good for babies and has on rare occasions caused bleeding just by being in contact with the skin. God help anyone who ingests it as it absorbs all moisture. Do consider cloth nappies - better and safer for all concerned. It makes me so Angry that these awful nappy companies care so little about what they produce - environmental issues aside, they're not even safe! It is possible to get gel-free disposables if you really can't face using the washable ones - Tushies are good. Available from Borndirect, and maybe Spirit of Nature.

YellowFeathers · 23/05/2006 13:29

I have bought Asdas own nappies for dd as shes only wearing them when she goes to bed. She wore one on Sunday night and when she got up her bum was covered in these crystals. The nappy did have a tear in the lining too.

I was quite suprised as I've never seen it before. Did actually wonder if she had some sort of infection at first.

Rowlers · 23/05/2006 13:32

\link{http://www.ecodyfi.org.uk/waste/nappiesproj.htm\Info at the bottom of this site} if you are interested in disposables which don't contain the crystals.

kate100 · 23/05/2006 13:43

I use the Nature Boy and Girl and I've never had any leaks and not any of those crystals on my LO's bottoms. Same price as any other disposable nappy too.

moondog · 23/05/2006 13:45

Very very creepy stuff, and next to the most delicate skin on the body.
Gawd knows what these chemicals are doing to our kids, would never touch nappies like this for this very reason.

My "what to expect.." book has something on this that might give another explanation. It talks about nappies that "seem to be filled with grains of sand". The book puts it down to the fact that "certain foods, particularly oats, cereals and pears - often appear sandy once they've passed through the digestive tract". My dd had this once and I put it down to that, but after so many people have mentioned the crystals I wonder if that was the real reason... Are the nappy crystals tiny - i.e. sand/sugar grain sized?

Rowlers · 23/05/2006 13:54

\link{http://www.naty.se/eng/index.html\Nature Boy and Girl} nappies do but much less than the main brands.
Think Tushies may the only ones which are completely free of it.

Rowlers · 23/05/2006 13:55

Yes CMac, they are.

fairyfly · 23/05/2006 13:56

It's the stuff that absorbs the wee, if they have a big big big load of wee and you don't change the nappy, the nappy busrsts.

Once my x was having a peice of cake at my house and this happened, I put them on his plate as the looked like cake crumbs.
