When I do a search on here I come up with a million bad experiences, for the sake of balance I would really like to hear from anyone who has good experiences.
I am planning on getting one, have an appointment next week to go through it all, it is to manage heavy painful periods. I dont need it for contraception as dh has had a vasectomy.

Someone else asked this question on here not long ago - loads of positive experiences were described.
My top tip is make sure they give you a local anaestetic (sp) when fitting.

CMOTDibbler · 12/03/2013 12:38

I've had one since 2000, with a break from 2004-2006 while TTC/pg. Has been brilliant for me, and I know several other people for whom it has been positive.

Mosschops30 · 12/03/2013 12:40

I'm on my second
Had it put in under general anaesthetic the second time GrinGrin which was fab!!

I also had very heavy periods, now I don't have any, I love it, bit like being a manWink
No weight gain, no pmt, no mood swings, no periods

janek · 12/03/2013 12:58

Positive for me too, very little by way of menstruation and i didn't find any need for any kind of anaesthetic during insertion, which is lucky as it wasn't offered!

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 12/03/2013 13:05

Mine is great, stopped my periods which is fantastic.

I wasn't offered anaesthetic either, I find the indignity of the fitting worse than the discomfort...it's on a par with a smear test.

thistlelicker · 12/03/2013 13:20

Did any of u ladies experience ando/uterine pain afterwards? Like contractions?

clicheboredhousewife · 12/03/2013 13:26

Its taken ages for mine to settle down but now it has, I love it. It hasnt stopped my periods completely, but made them super super light; so that tampons are pretty redundant :)
I experienced some vague cramping after it was fitted, and an issue with the 'threads' which are stiff dental floss things until they soften... once they soften they were no problem at all.
I wouldnt give my mirena up!

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 12/03/2013 13:53

Yeah pain after fitting but not the whole time it's in - better than years of period pains, I'd say!

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 12/03/2013 16:09

No Thistle, I didn't suffer from any uterine pain, a bit of discomfort for an hour or so after fitting, but not like a contraction.

LIZS · 12/03/2013 16:19

I'm on my 3rd . A few hours of cramping and spotting afterwards but no serious pain - enough to remind me of the benefits!

TheBriefestNameChange · 12/03/2013 16:24

Six months in and I am loving mine. I caught an infection when it was put in and bled horrendously and was in agony for 3 days until the antibiotics kicked in. Since then I have had no pain, no bleeding, no symptoms or anything!

thistlelicker · 12/03/2013 21:34

My friend had one yesterday! Today she's had severe abdo pain and her tummy is hard! Any ideas?

anniepanniepears · 12/03/2013 21:50

I am 55 and just had mine removed after 5 years, got it for heavy periods and never had any problems in fact stopped bleeding altogether.Have had it out now for 2 months and I hope to have seen the back of bleeding .I must admit it was sore getting it removed but only for a few seconds.

Slavetothechild · 13/03/2013 09:27

I had one at 45 due to heavy periods ( so Bad I needed blood transfusions ) it took about 5 months to settle down and I was a bit like a looney with pmt !!! Now 2 years later it is brilliant . Hardly any periods feel human again sex drives back fantastic. They tried putting it in at the hospital and it was so bloody painful that I ended up going to our gps. They put it in it wasn't pleasant but they got the job done ! Good luck

MirandaWest · 13/03/2013 09:29

Mine is great - hated having it put in and had cramps for about 48 hours but since then hardly any bleeding and will be having another one when this one runs out in October.

SimoneDeBeaver · 13/03/2013 09:32

I've had mine 4.5 months and it's just settled down. No bleeding except for a tiny amount for maybe 48 hrs - only need the thinnest pad. I had really heavy periods and was anaemic, and now I've got all my energy back it's great.

Samvet · 13/03/2013 09:32

They are awesome. No periods after severely heavy ones before. Putting in is not nice but not awful. Remember people with negative experiences may be more likely to talk about it!

daffsarecomingup · 13/03/2013 09:36

no problems with mine, i still bleed monthly, but it's light.

ThisIsMummyPig · 13/03/2013 09:43

I love mine. I would describe it as spotting rather than bleeding. It's been in for about 2 years, and I don't have a bad thing to say. I actually had mine put in at the same time as a smear, and one wasn't worse than the other.

If I couldn't have another on the NHS, I would pay for it. It's that good.

mrsshackleton · 13/03/2013 09:46

Fab for me. I bled pretty much non-stop for two months after it was fitted, now occasional (every 3 months) breakthrough bledding. No side effects except I'm permanently grumpy, but I suspect that isn't just to do with the coil Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/03/2013 09:51

Fab for me too, had it for nearly five years, I had it for heavy periods and contraception, it was inserted without problems (I went to the family planning clinic rather than my GP as they are more experienced in doing them and it was similar to a smear test, ie uncomfortable but not painful). Bleeding was erratic (but lighter) for about 6 months afterwards, then virtually nothing, just a bit of occasional spotting really.

ditavonteesed · 13/03/2013 20:03

thanks :)

Has anyone gone bald and grown a beard yet? My friend had one fitted and apparently her doctor had, jokingly I hope mentioned to watch out for the above, eer, symptoms.

RipleyIsMyHero · 14/03/2013 21:14

I'm having mine removed next week. I had it fitted last September to help with very heavy painful periods. I'm so disappointed as it hasn't worked. The senior nurse at my gps has prescribed me the mini pill and made an appointment for next week to get it removed. I'm hoping it doesn't hurt! To be honest I just wish they'd give me a hysterectomy now. I've suffered with painful periods most of my adult life.

Also, the mini pill that i've been prescribed came with a note of the pharmacist saying it's being discontinued, please see my gp. I've had enough of all this farting around. Wondering if I could demand a hysterectomy Smile

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 14/03/2013 21:21

Had one six months ago, not exactly lovely having it put in but not that bad. Felt weird for a couple of days but no probs since. Feel normal, no weight gain, one 'period' but nothing since. Works for me.
