3 yr old with blood in her knickers.

Anyone know why this may be?

Have been out for the afternoon with her, when we first arrived and i lifted her out of carseat, she squirmed and said her bottom hurt.
Then an hour and a half went by where she was absolutely fine.
Then i took her to the toilet and she cried when she weed, and continued looking in pain for couple of minutes after. She wouldn't let me look or touch her bottom to see prob - so i assumed she had perhaps cystitis. There was a little discharge in her knickers which she never normally has.
Pulled knickers up but she cried so i pulled them back down, and that is when this very thin line of red blood appeared.

That was about 1 hour ago, she hasn't shown any sign of pain since - won't let me look but i'm planning on bathing her soon.

I am hoping she just cut herself down below - although i don't understand how - hadn't even wiped with tissue until after the pain.

Just thought i'd ask wise mumsnetters if there could be any more serious reason for this?

Thanks in advance, and apologies for the length of post!

perhaps a little fissure after a straining poo?

lacrimosa · 13/04/2006 16:04

really bad cystitis? I hope she feels better soon x

Piffle · 13/04/2006 16:05

cystits is painful all the time, backache and it the blood is only evident when wiping the wee or with the wee. It's not bright red - bright red really sounds like botty probs...

fairyfly · 13/04/2006 16:06

I've heard about this but forgotten all of the facts, it's something to do with hormones taken from the mother in preganancy and is a period.

Twiglett · 13/04/2006 16:07

um you can have bright red blood with cystitis .. I did Sad

but I would say that she would need to be urinating a lot .. every 5 mins or so .. and it would burn ... lots of water and cranberry juice

I would take her to the doctor .. its probably some kind of infection

Twiglett · 13/04/2006 16:07

FF .. isn't that with a newborn?

fairyfly · 13/04/2006 16:09

I've read it can happen all through childhood.

Just a theory.

Probably not though.

suzywong · 13/04/2006 16:11

you've been with her all the time all day, right?

Hattie05 · 13/04/2006 16:11

Yes i remember her getting that when she was a newborn ff.

Its definitely from the front, not the bottom. It didn't even wipe on the tissue, it was when i pulled her knickers up and back down again it was there.

She is drinking plenty, and isn't in any pain now.

Thanks you guys, i think i will ring my docs before they shut for the easter weekend!

Oh really ff i didn't know that!

Yes suzywong, she's been playing on a bouncy castle - and she's a gentle little thing that gets off when other children get too boisteroous so i know that she hasn't been kicked there or anything. At the most there were about 3 children on at the same time as her. And i was watching the whole time because she won't let me leave her side!

Def check it out with the doc, just in case!

jampots · 13/04/2006 16:22

I wonder whether she may have had her hand down her knickers and accidentally scratched herself ?

Hattie05 · 13/04/2006 16:24

Again jampots - you know when you feel quite certain - we've been out in public and she hasn't been doing that and she isn't a fiddler down there anyway iykwim! Grin.

I rang nhs direct and nurse should call back in two hours, as my docs don't open until 6pm anyway. That way i thought nhsdirect can tell me whether its worth wasting the Gp's time for.

sorry hattie - wasnt insinuating she was the sort of child to publicly fiddle Blush but you know .....

Hattie05 · 13/04/2006 16:38

pmsl jampots, i didn't take offense!! i was just trying to explain you know how you just know your child hadn't been doing that?

aaawwww poor little thing, mayb a zip has caught her or something? is that possible?

Hattie05 · 13/04/2006 17:02

No zips on her trousers today! But thanks for the suggestions keep 'em coming.

I'm thinking it must be either a cut or cystitis, but would just like to be sure there is nothing more serious could be the cause.

Hattie, this happened to me when I ws about 8 or 9.

I had been running around at school, fell over and landed very hard on my bum. An hour or so later I had blood in my knickers and it hurt to wee, too. I was examined several hours later (not internally) and it was decided that the awkward and hard fall had just ruptured some capilleries (or something like that). I was fine the next day.

Hattie05 · 13/04/2006 18:04

Thanks mercy, thanks everyone!

Just spoke to Nhsdirect nurse. She decides it is definitely either a urethra or a vaginal infection, she says with either it is common to see blood loss and not too serious provided gets treated.

She advised over next 24hrs - for dd to drink plenty of fluids, wee frequently, ensure good hygiene, but bath for no longer than 15mins at a time, and give calpol every four hours.

If she still hurts or bleeds after 24 hours to ring Emergency doc, and get antibiotics.

So nothing to serious at least! thanks all x

I'd make sure she hasn't got a urine infection.
My friends little lad had spotting of blood and thats what it turned out to be. Hope she's ok

Hattie05 · 13/04/2006 20:03

Thanks childern,

i think urine infection is the same thing as urethra or vaginal isn't it? I assumed urine infection is the general description for an infection down below.

Mercy - you probably tore your hymen slightly! It's not uncommon apparently.

I did it once when I tried to leapfrog over an umbrella once.

don't ask

morningpaper · 13/04/2006 20:12

Hattie haven't you looked yet? My 3 year old lets me look if I play Doctors and nurses and say things like "Good morning Ms Morningpaper and how are you feeling today hmm?" :)

Hattie05 · 13/04/2006 20:15

Its defo an infection as she did a wee a little while ago and was in agony, and nhsdirect confirmed this.

Mercy · 13/04/2006 20:17

Morningpaper - yes when I was older I assumed that's what had happened too.

I don't even want to think about leapfrogging over umbrellas (ooooooh)
