3 yr old with blood in her knickers.

Anyone know why this may be?

Have been out for the afternoon with her, when we first arrived and i lifted her out of carseat, she squirmed and said her bottom hurt.
Then an hour and a half went by where she was absolutely fine.
Then i took her to the toilet and she cried when she weed, and continued looking in pain for couple of minutes after. She wouldn't let me look or touch her bottom to see prob - so i assumed she had perhaps cystitis. There was a little discharge in her knickers which she never normally has.
Pulled knickers up but she cried so i pulled them back down, and that is when this very thin line of red blood appeared.

That was about 1 hour ago, she hasn't shown any sign of pain since - won't let me look but i'm planning on bathing her soon.

I am hoping she just cut herself down below - although i don't understand how - hadn't even wiped with tissue until after the pain.

Just thought i'd ask wise mumsnetters if there could be any more serious reason for this?

Thanks in advance, and apologies for the length of post!

oooh Hattie I'm surprised they said to wait

We had a suspected urine infection and dd (also 3) was immediately sent to hospital to be put on a antibiotic drip

Oh, Hattie! I hope she's better soon. Poor dear!

A UTI (urinary tract infection) is a catch-all term for an infection in ANY part of the urinary tract, including the bladder and urethra - left untreated, some UTIs can spread to infect the kidneys, the origin of the urinary tract. That's why a child w/an infection present in her bladder or urethra should have anti-biotic treatment right away.

They're common in children, particularly in young girls, who have a short urethra.

A vaginal infection, of course, affects a different organ system, the reproductive system. B/c of the pH of the vagina, however, many 'vaginal infections' are caused by a build up of an organism called candida and are known as thrush. Although these can be very troublesome and require treatment, it's rare they spread beyond the vagina, unlike a UTI.

Keep us posted!

My 2 year old had a infection when he was 4wks old he has only just come off medication. You really have to becarefull

chapsmum · 13/04/2006 20:40

Yip To be honest I wouldnt wait 24 hours get her to a GP as soon as you can.

Nurofen is better for cysitus than paracetamol.
Lots to drink will nutralise the pee and cranberry jusice will stop the bus sticking to the wall of the urethra.

HTH

I seem to remember that they said if it had been a urine infection she would have to have a kidney scan because it can cause permanent damage

Thinking about it, I would probably get to a doc tonight if poss

childern · 13/04/2006 20:53

yes my son had all scans on kidneys. Thats why he was on medication till he was 2 to make sure the infection didn't come back

chapsmum · 13/04/2006 20:53

The scan thing is more likely for the under 2's. As infection before the age of 2 can lead to kidney scarring.
Infections after 2 can be caused by childen holding the toilet in and not wiping properly, they would probably not scan unless she had more than one.

But definately agree would not wait 24 hours

childern · 13/04/2006 21:02

Not to sure about that as my mates little lad is 31/2 he had to have a scan because he bleed. Sad Would hate any thing to happen knowing what we have been through and lernt.

expatinscotland · 13/04/2006 21:09

I agree w/chapsmum, don't wait. It is common in children her age and easily treated w/antibiotics.

Hope she gets some relief soon.

Cranberry juice diluted with water might help. Or just the juice straight up if she's up for it.

SomethingAboutMary · 13/04/2006 21:17

You should not wait, I had a urine infection & waited i ended up in hospital for a week because it got to my kidneys, i was seriously ill...

She will need antibiotics.

HappyMumof2 · 13/04/2006 21:18

have you actually looked at her? may not be a urine infection. If she's injured herself it will sting when she wees.
The blood is a real worry imo. I would go to A & E this evening if it was my dd.

Hattie05 · 14/04/2006 08:48

Gosh i've just got up this morning to read all this! Now i feel like a wicked mother.

Heres the update - she has had a nappy on all night, and i havn't been aware of her in any pain, it is wet and she tells me her bottom doesn't hurt anymore.

I didn't give calpol, as she was only in 'pain' when weeing, i couldn't see the point (always reluctant to give medicines unless necessary).

Yes i've had a look - can't see any 'injury'.

Can't see any blood in nappy - but then it would probably soak in with wee anyway.

She has drunk plenty of water.

Will ring emergency GP if she still is in pain when wees today - following advice from all you guys!

Thanks everyone.

She can have a urine infection with no symptoms until she suddenly gets a high fever or becomes very suddenly ill

I would get it checked out sooner rather than later - a night in the children's ward is no fun!
