Mirena coil

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

tilba, are you in the UK??? I can't imagine a doctor agreeing to a general for the insertion of a coil. If not then I stand corrected

ks, it didn't hurt anymore than a smear or anything, though I did get a rush of blood to the head and felt dizzy for about 10 minutes, but that was it.

tilba · 18/07/2003 03:58

No I am not! I'm in Hong Kong where you can get anything you want!!
Re the coil though : I wanted heavy periods sorted out as well as contraception. My GP suggested the Merina but I wanted to check it out with my ObGyn who agreed but said they work so much better if you have a D&C first. ie far better result if your problem is heavy periods.
I have had a fantastic result but my friend who also had heavy periods++++++ but was terrified of a GA and forwent the D&C hasn't noticed much of a difference, bled for 6 weeks cont. and now has break through bleeding.
Wishes now she had just had gone and had a d&c and had the coil put in at the same time.

Bumblelion · 22/07/2003 14:29

I might have to another another colposcopy (dodgy smear again) and also might need a D&C. They are going to give me a general anaesthetic (I live in U.K.) and also fit the mirena coil at the same time.

LIZS · 28/07/2003 15:04

good luck Bumblelion, hope it all turns out ok for you.

Does anyone know whether there is a problem doing a smear if you have some spotting at the time. I go through phases (had a couple of months earlier this year with none at all after a year on Mirena) of having a little brown discharge and have just realised that this may coincide with my OB/Gyn check up. As this is not always the case, and timing not 100 o/o predictable, I'm a bit loath to cancel on the off chance especially if it would not affect the result. My feeling is, at worst, I'd be asked to come back another time.

Kazbaz · 29/07/2003 07:53

Hi LIZS, last time I went for a smear i had some spotting (also have mirena coil) and my GP postponed doing it saying the results would be too difficult to read. I guess you might as well go on the offchance it's ok that day though.

Hi Ladies,
New here...wondering about the mirena coil..I have one after TERRIBLE painful periods after my DS was born 20 months ago...It was the BEST decision I ever made!...We are kinda thinking of another baby in the future...maybe in another yr or so?..and I was wondering if any of you have any idea when I should have my iud removed?...I know with a normal iud ( had one for years! ) they recommend a 3 month 'other' contraception period...but with the hormonal implications
of this..when will my fertility return?..is it straight away as is stated on the info?..or should I still use additional protection?..Also..when the iud is removed..do you bleed immediately..thus meaning the timing of your future periods are likely to be around the time of month you had the iud removed?..this may sound like a silly question..but I work a weird shift pattern and would rather have the crampy tummy time when I am OFF work if at all possible!..lol

Thanks guys..in
anticipation of a reply!

Hugs to you all

Linda

When I had mine out last Jan, the doc told me to use alternative contraception straightaway if I didn't want to get pg as, officially, you're fertile immediately. If you want to work out when your periods will be, though, you might want to wait one full cycle. I remember I didn't bleed much after having it removed but about 10 days later had a really heavy bleed which took me by surprise (to say the least). This lasted about 9 days (nice!) but after that periods went back to normal.

monkey · 13/10/2003 15:33

It does say you're fertile straight away, but my doc still said, and it was true for me, that it can take 3 mnths. I can't really tell you about cycles off the top of my head, but for me anyway, i had nothing for about 3 months (convinced I was pg)

Hi, new to this so bear with me. Went to docs last night for more pills who has told me NO WAY can I have anymore .... high blood pressure/smoker/over 35 etc. I am on a high dose pill (50mg) because otherwise I CONSTANTLY spot. She suggests Mirena best for me as when not on the pill I have very heavy (but regular) periods since birth of baby 2 yrs ago. I see that this coil contains low doses of hormone but when I have been on 30 mg doses of the pill before I spot all the time. I can't bear it. I'd hate to go thru all the turmoil of having it fitted only to find i bleed all the time like i do on low dose pills. Anyone else had this problem with pills and, if so, how has it been on Mirena ?? Thank you x

damselfly · 13/09/2004 00:20

hi everyone, I had my coil fitted last xmas and I have put on 2 stone also I am having it taken out as I am more depressed than before, although I am not looking forward to heavy periods again...please what is the answer hysterectomy?

kraftycat81 · 18/09/2004 23:27

Well I have had the blasted thing removed had period almost straight away not a mojorly heavy one.Fingers crossed on the loosing weight. Has anyone else lost the weight gained by the mirena coil after removal, if so how long did it take to get back to normal size?

ChicPea · 19/09/2004 00:44

'Scuse me for butting in but:

I was told by a friend that she was told not to have a Mirena coil fitted when she opted for a coil as she still hoped to have a baby at some stage. So she had a normal one fitted for 3 years, had it removed 3mths ago and is now preg. Have you all been advised this?

Can't believe the Mirena coil leads to weight gain! Struth! That would seriously P**s me off. Is this listed in the risks. KraftyKat, I would get the thing removed tomorrow. It can't be doing you any good, unless of course, you list not getting pregnant as one good thing. Both my Ob and Gynea (2 sep drs) raved about this coil but I don't like the idea of something with hormones (am anti-pill) and hate idea of something that could get embedded. Has this happened to anybody?

DH wants me to have coil but have resisted so far.

special · 15/10/2004 12:24

Hi every one, im so glad i found this site. I had a mirena coil fitted five days ago and I have been in agonising pain since. It really hurt when they fitted it and now i have got terrible cramps in my uterus and back and leg. The bleeding has eased off and im not worried about that too much as i was expecting it. I have been taking Ibuprofen regularly which helps but im not sure if its good even to take that indefinately. Some of your letters make it sound like i shouldnt be getting this pain after five days. Iknow also that i have a high pain threshold like most women. I think i will phone my doctor in a minit but i would appreciate your comments and help, Thankyou. I also feel depressed and tearful and totally violated.

spacemonkey · 15/10/2004 12:27

I had terrible cramps too for a couple of weeks after having mine fitted. In the end I went to my GP and had it checked because I was convinced it must have slipped, but it was fine. They just told me to take painkillers and a few days later it settled down. I'd say if you're worried definitely see your GP or practice nurse.

foxinsocks · 15/10/2004 12:33

damselfly (and others with very heavy periods) - you can get a tablet you take on your heavy days - can't remember the name, tranexamic acid I think (?)

I have unbelievably heavy periods that are a nightmare - I'm going to ask the GP for them (when I finally get there) because an acquantaince of mine who had v heavy periods was put on them and they literally changed her life.

And I think Mears may take them (think that may be where I heard about them first!)

susanmt · 16/10/2004 04:08

Your fertility can come back immediately you have it taken out ... and I mean immediately. Mine had slipped into my cervix and I got pregnant just because it was not in my uterine cavity. It was (they think) the smear I had had 6 weeks previously that caused it to slip, but I guess we'll never know.

I liked it so much (no weight gain, no mood problems, no periods, no migraines, no PMT, no worries!) that I have had another one put in (though, given our history, we are not relying on it for contraception and dh has had the snip as well) but the gynae was delighted to give it to me for heavy periods and migraines.

I can't recommend it highly enough, despite what happened to us. When I had it fitted 6 weeks ago my gynaecologist said that I was the ONLY reported case of a woman who got pregnant with a mirena in place in 2003. SO it is pretty reliable!

Loobz · 20/10/2004 22:06

Had my Mirena coil fitted October last year, piled on weight. Have started back at slimming club but just cannot shift this weight. Has anyone else had problems losing weight with this coil? Also my mood has been really low and I am anxious a lot of the time - not sleeping well - wakening up really early feeling panicky then am shattered during the day. Anyone else experience anything like this - or am I just nuts???!!!

damselfly · 21/10/2004 17:45

just an update folks I did have the mirina coil removed 3 weeks ago, and yes the periods have returned but i am going in for investigation re fibroids! on the plus side I feel almost sane again and have lost weight already and without trying.thanks foxinsocks if the pain gets too bad i will ask for this medication

mirenadepressed · 25/10/2004 13:16

I Had the Mirena Coil fitted in March 2004 and after reading all the messages and realising that I was not the only person to have gained weight, have mood swings, be anxious and nervous. I decided to have it removed las week, It has only been 4 days but I feel better. It is going to take a long while to get back to normal (if that is possible) and lose nearly 3 stone, but I am going to try.

Loobz · 25/10/2004 18:55

Am so glad that I found this site and read these messages. Was begining to think I was going nuts. Am seeing my GP on Wednesday to have this thing out as I can't stand the weight gain or the mood swings much longer. Think my family and work colleagues might be happy about this too!

Loobz · 27/10/2004 21:18

Went to gp today with symptoms and she laughed at me - told me that there was no way they were related to coil. Blamed my weight on my age (i'm 46) and offered me anti-depressants for mood swings!!! then took blood to check thyroid which i've already had checked. Don't know what to do now

mirenadepressed · 28/10/2004 11:27

I was perfectly healthy until I had the coil fitted. The doctor also gave me anti depressants (which I did not take). Also I am seeing a thyroid specialist, the problem with the thyroid also only appeared after having the coil fitted. I had heart palpitations and taking a heart pill to calm the heart down (also only after having the coil fited. But since having it removed only 7 days ago, I feel much better in myself. I am not nervous and anxious, I have not taken the heart pills for 2 days either. Keep persisting with your doctor, you know your body.

Loobz · 28/10/2004 20:23

Thanks Mirenadepressed! Yesterday I was upset, today I am angry. I will wait until I get the thyroid results on Monday then I am going back as I do want this removed. You are right - I do know my own body and I know that I do not need antidepressants!!!
