Mirena coil

Lizzer · 07/01/2002 12:41

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

well, there's a thread here w/over 600 posts and most of them have had a horrid time w/Mirena.

do a search on progesterone and female depression.

i found out the hard way what progesterone can do to a woman w/PND. and it wasn't pretty.

Gezzie · 25/11/2006 16:25

exactly! It can't be all in my head! I've read some pretty nasty things about the Mirena IUD too. I've been reseraching for days now.

I am trying very hard not to write a public post at the forum. However, I have a right to defend myself. I did not, at any time, suggest that those women do not try the Mirena IUD - I just wrote to simply state that the Mirena didn't work for me and stated all the side effects. I can't help feeling that she is trying to publically win some battle - well, I will let her get on with it if it makes her feel better.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 25/11/2006 16:28

How did you find your cycle was after you had the coil removed?
I had af a few days after I had mine out but was due last week but get a bfn when doing a pg test

Gezzie · 25/11/2006 16:30

I had the IUD inserted for heavy and prolonged bleeding. I have no clue where I am in my cycle. I am completely messed up

Cockadoodydirtybirdie · 25/11/2006 18:42

Gezzie - don't let this woman on the forum make you doubt yourself. mirena's obviously affect all women differently and i don't see why she can't respect your experiences in the same way you respect hers. don't worry about it, she seems to have her own agenda, so leave her to it!

dingdongmerRADLEYonhigh · 25/11/2006 18:52

Don't know whether this is connected to the coil, but, i had it fitted at the beginning of october and have noticed

I have started getting spots
Really really bad headaches
Constant really dull aches like period pains
Horrendous lower back ache that wakes me up through the night
My skin pre coil was combination, now it is greasy
Have really low days where making a cup of tea is an effort
No libido, to the point DH is worrying that I don't love him anymore

dingdongmerRADLEYonhigh · 25/11/2006 18:53

Also, when I told my consultant alot of what i've read on here and my worries etc, he burst out laughing and said it was all bullshit.

2ndtime · 25/11/2006 19:20

Gezzie, I bet your on-line friend is a GP in RL!
Radley, tell me who your consultant is, I go smash his face in.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 25/11/2006 19:24

Sorry Gezzie my question wasn't aimed directly at you!!
2nd time is right 'she' is prob a male gp!
Radley I felt the same but since having my coil out I do feel better plus the female gp I saw was supportive when I told her how I was feeling with my coil in
Hi 2ndtime!

2ndtime · 25/11/2006 20:02

Hi Whoops, how are you? Still feeling good?

whoopsfallenoveragain · 25/11/2006 20:10

Not feeling too bad - have been feeling sick a lot but not convinced I'm pg though
not getting so many headaches etc as I was though now

expatinscotland · 25/11/2006 20:26

They hard sell the Mirena at the FPC here.

Must get them in a batch lot for a discount.

whoopsfallenoveragain · 25/11/2006 20:38

Expat you're right about that!!
My bf has asked for one but her fpc have advised against it suggested she had an implant instead

ROSE3 · 26/11/2006 13:05

hi every1,
started period on friday. it is so so light which is great. BUT i've got a few spots on my face which i never get + starting to get some that look like blisters?! Legs have been aching and yesterday had the most horrific moodswings, felt really violent and almost unable to look after kids. thankfully its w'end and hubbys home, but ended up gettin drunk just to stop feeling angry. Feel completly controlled by emotions today and really depressed. Is this when the problems start or is this just a pms thing that will eventually settle down? HELP!

LIZS · 26/11/2006 13:25

It should settle down but you may need to give it a few months. I used to get spots but have had far fewer in the last year or so , having said that since the new one was fitted have had some spotting and a couple of pimples so hope it is just the effect of the switch and will settle again. tbh also I think some of the initial (as opposed to longer term ones described below) symptoms can be attributed to the stress and anxiety of getting the appointment over and done with as much as the device itself.

multitasker · 26/11/2006 14:07

I know this is a thread about contraception but if anyone was thinking of sterilisation I can highly recommend a new(ish) procedure called Essure. I had my three dc by cs so I found the insertion very painful - probably much the same pain as having the coil fitted but after a few days cramps I felt great.
I never found a contraception that agreed with me, a five year implant left me bloated and spotty so I had it removed after two years, and the pill left me with no libido. I love knowing that how I feel during my cycle is completely natural and added-hormone free.

Gezzie · 26/11/2006 16:32

Hi girls - still struggling - can't believe the Mirena has messed me up so much. Have a loving, supportive husband and great kids. They're helping me to get through it.

Noted the comments about my friend sounding like a doctor - probably why she doesn't know jack sh**!

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday.

Gez~

ROSE3 · 26/11/2006 18:01

hello again,
have spent the day crying. feel so immature and totally unable to cope with anything. feel like removing it myself. definetly have developed blisters and kids seem like such hard work. am i going mad?

Gezzie · 26/11/2006 18:18

Hi Rosie -

Please consider having the damn thing out. Do you really think its worth this misery? No-one should need alcohol to dampen angry feelings or be in tears all day. Life is too short. Make an appointment to have it out asap.

Sending lots of ((((Hugz))))

ROSE3 · 26/11/2006 18:34

hi Gezzie,
ty for your message, the thing is its only been about tens days and the first few days i felt great. my periods before for awful, heavy and painful. i feel like a failure, i cant take the pill or have the injection or the copper coil because my periods are so heavy that it makes me anaemic and this seemed like the perfect solution, i wanted this to work so much. i dont want to talk to hubby as, as understanding as he is i'm sure he just dos'nt get it. and at this rate its working as great contraceptive because i don't think he even wants to come near me. when i went to have it fitted he was great and so understanding but today i know he thinks why cant she just see that its the coil making her sad and angry and get a grip.

ROSE3 · 26/11/2006 18:37

Sorry Gezzie
I've just read my message. don't mean to be so negative! see what i mean i'm just sitting here letting it all out without even realising how miserable i sound. I'm going mad! I think i will go back to GP tomorrow!

LIZS · 26/11/2006 19:44

Go back to gp if you are worried about a rash etc - could yet be something else. I'd just say don't be too hasty if you think you may yet benefit with lighter periods etc. btw these things aren't cheap so find it hard to believe gp's/fpc's would dish it out without consideration of alternatives.

Gezzie · 26/11/2006 20:18

Dont worry about your message sounding negative. It's okay and I understand that you are feeling miserable.

I know you want the Mirena IUD to work for you and not against you - The Mirena coil worked within days to drastically reduce my heavy bleeding problem. However, I just coul not tolerate the side effects. The first two weeks were okay but I felt spaced out and knew that something didn't feel right wih me. Two weeks after that, all hell broke lose - mood swings, mood lability, tiredness, craving for sweet foods -

Like you, I became very anaemic because of the heavy bleeding so my doctor prescribed iron supplements. I hoped the Mirena would sove the problem - it just bought more problems.

I am now looking at natural alternatives that may help because I will never put , but one thing I'm sure of - I will never put another hormone in my body!

I dont know much about your medical history or if the intense mood swings are a sudden occurance with you. You need to judge for yourself how long you can tolerate your body going through this.

Listen to your inner voice - what does it tell you? ...

((((big Hugz)))) Rose!

sja307 · 27/11/2006 14:44

Hiya all what a great source of information this is. I've had my Mirena for about 3 weeks now, was wondering if anybody had used any medication for tender breasts? is so what can you recommend.

charlieyates · 29/11/2006 12:37

hi ladies,i have just joined as i wanted to ask if anyone had had mirena removed when no strings are visable. i had mine in in jan 2006, at my 6 week check i had no strings, been for a scon and its still in place but was wondering how they remove it?
i have been reading some of your posts and might make a visit to the doctors,i have 3 childern, the older 2 i suffered with pnd, the 3rd seemed to be fine, but since he got 2 about 8months(a month after coil fitted) i have been really struggling, spotty skin, hair loss, no sex drive whatsoever, i am so so tired all the time, snappy and my dh says im a right cow to live with, no weight gain but cant loose what i want to, and lack of energy as everything just takes so much effort. i just thought it was pnd again altough i haven't got the courage up to go to doctors, dont want them to think i cant cope especially as i am so broody. maybe it could be due to the coil, just want to get it sorted.
