Mirena coil

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

Hi Tinkerlou
I'd just had my fourth child and was losing the weight and gaining shape really well, then I had the mirena put in and like yourself couldn't shift the weight no matter how much I exercised or how little I ate, I have had it removed 6 days ago and already I am less grumpy and stroppy with hubby more patient with the kids [ yes all 4 of them!] and have lost half a stone. I feel sooooo much better within myself and really pleased I made the decision to have it removed. Good luck.

Tinkerlou · 06/02/2006 21:13

thats amazing that you've seen a change so soon! well done on the weight loss, i'm sure your hubby and kids will be pleased with their 'new' mum. i'm really pleased for you.
Are you bleeding since having it removed? i'm going to Egypt for a week in 3 weeks and don't want to get it out before the holiday in case i get heavy bleeding.

iamrachel · 06/02/2006 22:38

Only enough for a panty liner then it only lasted less than a week.

Good Morning
Like others so pleased I found this website I found I have been awful I have been for my partner a couple of times which I am totally ashamed of and people annoy all the time, and it all makes sense now since having this fitted.
Dr said I was over reacting but having it removed next Thursday Hoorah

I was on the pill for 10 years before coming off it to get pregnant. After having my daughter I went back on the pill but suffered from awful migraines, so I had to come off it and have been told that I can no longer take any pill. I was considering having a coil fitted but having read some of these messages re weight gain and mood swings, I'm now very worried! I'm desperately trying to lose weight before I get married at the end of May and don't need it to be harder! However, condoms are not a long term solution so does anyone have any other advice on a contraception device? Thanks....

I'm hopefully getting mine taken out next week when I go in hospital for laparoscopy. My moods have been horrendous and getting worse. I told my poor DH that he stunk the other day then this morning I told him I thought he was having a fling behind my back. I'm laughing about it now but with the way I've been treating the poor soul I wouldn't be surprised if he was. I let rip at the school secretary last week too but she was asking for it. (My DD had just gone back to school after coming ouf of hospital because she was having seizures, I was in the bath and the phone kept ringing, then my mobile rang about 10 times and I leapt out of the bath fearing that my DD had suffered another seizure at school. It turned out that she had phoned me a total of 20 times in about 5 minutes to tell me that I had forgotten to sign the cheque for my DD'd school dinner money!!! I probably was not as tactful as I could have been but the stupid woman put the fear of god into me) Expat, have you had any more news regarding your fitting? I hope you get a cancellation soon. If I'd known how the Mirena was going to affect me you could have gladly had my appointment instead of me lol. Anyway I'll let you know how I get in having it removed and if my moods improve. Take care all xx

Hi all I am new at all this. I found this site as I was looking for info on the merina coil. I have 4 children at the mo and have recently lost my merina coil. This I find hard to believe as it was there the other day and now its not. I have been checked and its definately not there. The nurse said as I have had a few children its probably likely that is has come away and I havent noticed as things have been a little stretched with all the kids. I have now found myself in the dilemma of having another put in.. After reading everyones comments the penny has just dropped. I had mine fitted in sept 2004 never had any trouble, bled sometimes and then again didnt. The moods have been the worst with getting all wound up over nothing. All of the side effects of this coil. I think I am now going to ask for another form of contraception as I dont want to be miserable for the rest of my life. I am still in shock as I cant think of how is came out. Any thoughts or comments would be of great help.

I had a Mirena coil fitted 3 weeks ago. I found this very painful when fitted (im not a softy I had 3 children with out pain relief) I have been off work since I had this fitted. First of all I had an infection, I look 6 months pregnant I was even asked when the baby was due. I have been having sever headaches and last nigh a ambulance was called due to chest pains and difficulty breathing they seam to think this could possible be linked to the coil. I already want the coil removed. I know it is early days but I feel so dreadful I can?t see me going on like this for another 6 months I just pray my consultant will remove it. I have now been waiting a week and a half for an emergency appointment to arrive via the post. Has any one else had other problems apart from mood swings and weight gain? I have lost 8 pounds since this was fitted and at 5ft 1 and 8stone I cannot afford to lose too much weight. I am so fed up. (sad)

I've decided not to have it. I'm on Cezarette instead. At least, if I have bad side effects w/it, it doesn't require another trip to the doctors and being poked and prodded again.

lindsey41 · 11/02/2006 18:24

Has anyone suffered from severe pain when having a Mirena fitted? I went two days ago to have one put in and ended up staying in the clinic for 2 hours!! As soon as it was fitted I started to faint, and my blood pressure dropped. My pulse was down to 39, and I started vomiting. I was getting very worried and had to phone my sister to come and take me home. When I started vomiting for the 2nd time the doctor insisted on removing it immediately. This was painful, but nowhere near as painful as having it fitted. The pains in my abdomen eased straight away. It was an awful experience so I went to my GP ( not least to have my heart checked as advised by family planning doctor) GP said Mirena was probably stuck in my cervix, causing endocervical shock. This was very frightening , and I will not be trying again!!
Has anyone had a similar experience. I wonder if my womb is a funny shape or something? Thnx

foxinsocks · 11/02/2006 18:37

haye, I lost an enormous amount of weight with it - largely because I felt so ill when it was in. I can't remember now how long mine was in for (it's probably on mumsnet somewhere!) - I think it was around 12 weeks because I kept thinking (and the doc kept thinking) I would start to feel better. I had very painful, swollen breasts (like so painful I couldn't turn over in bed), dreadful nausea (like all day morning sickness) and terrible headaches. I think I lost around 6kg but can't remember exact figure.

haye · 14/02/2006 09:29

I went back to my doctors and he has agreed that this coil needs removing, as I?ve felt so ill from the moment it was fitted that?s the good news. The bad news is I have to wait 3 weeks as they only remove 2 a weeks at my surgery and there booked for the next 2 weeks. So that?s 7 weeks in total I could have recovered from a hysterectomy by then. I have 3 children I can?t see why they would not just give me a hysterectomy in the beginning. I certainly do not want any more children. I can?t wait to get rid of the stomach pains headaches chest pains sickness and the over all feeling of YUK

mcmum · 14/02/2006 09:49

i had mirena fitted last january for heavy painfull periods and i agree it was uncomfortable to have fitted and i did bleed quite a bit after. I still have periods tho very light and on 3-4 week cycle with pain but mild in comparison. I can't feel mine neither can dh, however when i went for check up a few weeks ago neither could the nurse and couldnkt see threads which sent me in a panic, had to wait 2 weeks for a scan which showed mirena sitting happily where she should be, i havnt lost any weight (mind nothing to lose am skeleton like anyway) mood swings i am a bad temepered bitch at best of times so that hasn't changed either other than that i am happy with it and would recommend but it takes MONTHS to work well did for me and i mean 10 months !

Haye hope you are ok sounds like you have had a really rough time with mirena! big hug

lapsedrunner · 14/02/2006 09:58

Has anyone got a positive story about Mirena? If so I would love to hear about it. I was all set to ask my Gynae about it as I have an appointment tonight. Part of me wants to believe that I am only reading negative news about it as all the people who are happy with it would not think to look at a post on Mirena?

I thought it was the answer to all my problems until I found this thread (an others on the web)...any more positive vibes?

foxinsocks · 14/02/2006 10:09

I know lots of people for whom Mirena has been a godsend - lighter periods and for some friends, it has really helped their PMT.

I think if you have ever had any adverse reactions to any contraceptive it's worth discussing this in detail with the doctor before you have one fitted.

mcmum · 14/02/2006 10:11

lapsedrunner,
i do like mine now and it has stopped my pains as i was doubled up in agony for days just b4 period and during where as now i probably get a level 2 pain day before, i know several friend who have them who dont have any periods at all, everyone is different and i think you should ask about it tonight and giv it a go if you dont like or doesnt suit take it out. it is alot easier coming out than going in apparrently.

lapsedrunner · 14/02/2006 10:12

I've never had any real PMT symptoms and never had any problems with the pill.

I want to use it to have lighter periods (v heavy since ds born) & freedom of contraception.

I am really put off by the chance of major weight gain and mood swings though.

mcmum · 14/02/2006 10:15

ive never gained weight i am 5ft 4 and weigh 7 1/2 stone! dont have any more mood swings than b4

expatinscotland · 14/02/2006 10:16

I've got too much metal in my knees to risk weight gain. It's not a matter of aesthetics to me, it could cause my autografted ligament to snap, which I do NOT want.

So I'm sticking to the Pill for now.

mcmum · 14/02/2006 10:17

oooh that sounds painfull. I would stick to pill too !

lapsedrunner · 14/02/2006 10:22

I would love to stick to the pill but have been told I'm too old (43).

expatinscotland · 14/02/2006 10:23

I ripped up my knees is a skiing accident in my 20s. It took 4 major surgeries to repair the damage and at times I thought I'd never walk again w/o pain. Extra weight really hurts. It was hell when I was pregnant.

Plus, I can't afford new clothes if I gained weight. I really can't.

mcmum · 14/02/2006 10:26

expatinscotland,
def stick to pill, i hope u r ok
