yay!!!!

i also gave up smoking b4 xmas, as i had flu and my throat was so raw i couldnt even bear the thought of smoking. my dh gave up too, so we are saving over £30 a week. so we have put the money away to pay for a holiday.

with regards to food, i find i snack at night, but am going back on the atkins diet soon, so will hopefully lose the added pounds b4 we go on the holiday from our fag money.

have u tried some chewing gum or polos? i dont like them myself too much but dh keeps polo's in the car to starve off the cravings he has when driving.

good luck, and keep at it.

Well done! It really is worth it, be proud of yourself. Water is a good idea. Remember, the pangs are just minute pangs and they will pass in a little while. Someone told me recently that because she'd read that a pang took 15 minutes to pass she used to look at her watch and think "ok, this is a pang and it'll be gone by...(whatever time was 15 minutes hence)" I don't think they even last that long though, I think they're only a minute or two. Keeping busy helped me but Twink's your woman here for solid advice, she's stopped and stayed stopped for ages.

Me too Twinkie. I had my last fag at 9pm on NY Eve after reading the Alan Carr book. I too feel very proud and each day is getting easier. Just have to work on dh now!

Well done you!

I'll join in now.... I had cut down to one a day ( yes.... just ONE) before Christmas and have now not had one or felt like having one for days now!

Long may it continue. DH isn't even trying though.
We've never smoked in our house anyway, so he's banished to the back garden on his own to smoke.

WELL DONE EVERYONE!

prufrock · 05/01/2004 11:33

Well done Twinkie. YOu will feel better soon, honestly. And just think - if you give up now you won't have to do it in the future when you start ttc.

I find that when I don't smoke my pen tops get seriously chewed. So make a trip to the stationery cupboard, and try to ignore the Freudian implications of needing something in your mouth.

When is the court case Twinkie?? Are you feeling confident? Hope it all goes your way, I really do.

charliecat · 05/01/2004 19:49

Well done folks. I have been eating and chewing on everything possible, but am now on day 8 of no fags. Easy for some of the day torture for others but am working through it. I have a stash of quality street, chewing gum mints etc in the kitchen to grab at in desperate times. I figure its healthier to eat a bit more than smoke, and as i feel fitter i will have more energy and burn it off??!!!! Heres to hoping anyway! Kepp it up!

bunny2 · 05/01/2004 21:37

I have been a social smoker for the last 3 years (prior to that a 20 a day habit) and I havent had a cigarette since before Christmas. The new anti-smoking ad campaign is disgusting but very effective. I lit up a ciggy a few nights ago, thought of the ad (the bit where they squeeze all that gunge out of an artery) and stubbed it out immediately. Shock tactics work for me. Well done everyone.

Twink · 05/01/2004 22:27

Brilliant Twinkie, to be honest you couldn't have picked a better time to stop, if you can cope now with all the stuff you're dealing with, you really can cope with anything.

Erm, who was it thought they could stitch me up with a fag & photo at the Christmas London meet ??! I'm sure there were about 6 of you trying and I must confess I was nervous in case you managed it (hence all the dodgy dancing..)

Stick at it all of you, it is sooooo worth it, this is cut & pasted from my previous posts:

I'm a 'many times' ex-smoker and have finally had to accept that I'm an all or nothing person. I LOATHE smoking, except when the wheels have fallen off my waggon.

Patches really helped me through the early stages, then I went and got pregnant so had to go cold turkey...

I used to find my weakest point (apart from the pub) was getting petrol, I was so used to picking up 40 B&H at the same. I used to try and fix it so I'd always fill up at a 'Pay at Pump' station, that way I avoided all the sweets too.

I stopped going to the pub unless dh would be there too (not that he's scarey at all !) and pretty soon hated going at all as I couldn't stand coming home stinking of smoke.

READ THIS BIT !

A word of warning though, after the inital physical withdrawal symptoms stopped (which is quite a short period of time, around 7 days I think) my brain used to play tricks on me
'well you've lasted this long so you've proved you can do it, so just having one every so often will be fine'

NO IT WON'T !!!!!

everytime I've thought that (I've 'given up' 4 times) I've been back on to 20+ a day in less than a week. I have to think of myself as a recovering ex-smoker not a non-smoker, even after 4 years of not smoking (I once went back to it after 6 years, how stupid am I ?)'

You can do it, just don't let nicotine trick you because it WILL try to. If any of you are struggling please email me and I'll try to help.
I'm now back to 5 years without smoking, so almost back to my best !

Twink xxx

PS How are the other quiters doing ? You know who you are and I won't stalk you !

tigermoth · 06/01/2004 07:09

well done twinkie and northener and all you other non smokers.

I can't give any advice about coping with the nicotine cravings, but I am trying to cut down on how much wine I drink at home in the evening so am trying to change myh routines too. The best replacement drink I have found is chai - spicy tea made with milk and sugar, if you like. You can get it all over the place. Mine comes from Sainsburys. I find it really calming and satisfying.

charliecat · 12/01/2004 21:23

Hows everyone getting on??? Im still nicotine free, found a really sad website that makes me cry everytime i dare to go near it, theres storys from familys who have lost people who couldnt stop smoking, or did but too late.
I am on day 15 i think and i have cracked it i hope.

codswallop · 12/01/2004 21:24

well done you lot - remember how much more pleasant you will smell

buy yourself some new perfume - codsters orders!

codswallop · 12/01/2004 21:25

The benefits of giving up (from BUPA)

The younger you stop the better, but even people up to 75 years old will have a longer life. It's never too late to benefit from quitting.

The benefits you will notice within a few weeks of giving up are:

your hair, skin and breath no longer smell of tobacco smoke
your breathing is easier
your sense of taste and smell improve
you'll see a reduction in phlegm and smoker's cough
your lung efficiency starts to recover to a rate similar to a non-smoker
you will be better able to cope with physical exertion
you'll feel positive about yourself for having stopped
and of course, you will have saved money through not buying cigarettes

JJ · 12/01/2004 21:26

Just read tigermoth's post. Me too, tigermoth! Join me in going without for 30 days. Break an old habit before starting a new one. Or something like that, I don't really know.

misdee · 12/01/2004 21:30

i had a cigerette 2 nights ago. i felt awful afterwards, and definatly dont want to start again.
