Ihad the coil put in at the end of oct/beginning of nov - sorry this is discusting

i had a sort of persid a couple of days after having it put in.

I then started my period again on 20th december

i had a normalish period up until xmas eve

from then onwards i have bled really really bad - so bad i have had a couple of accidents with clothes and i'm having to change my pad every 45mins.

is this normal or should i be worried.

It has slowed down a little 2-day but not alot

Am wondering if i have made a mistake having this put in

any advice apreciated

Fairydust, I have no experience with this at all, so I am no help!! I have read that they can increase cramping, etc., but I would put a call into your doctor and speak with them about this. Make sure you are eating well and getting plenty of fluids. I worry about everything, so I would call first thing in the morning and describe this to them. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I had a coil fitted last January and bled really really heavy for the first 3 or 4 months to the point that I could not really go out for the first 3 days as I used super heavy plus tampons and a towel as the tampon needing changing every 45-60 mins. Almost a year on, my periods are still very heavy (still need super plus extra tampons that need changing very frequently and use tampons and towels at night and still have to get up a couple of times on the heaviest nights to avoid leakage) I don't really get any pain though. Friends who have coils fitted have the same problem with heavy periods so I think its 'normal'. I also felt quite weak due to the blood loss for the first few months. I'm sticking with the coil though as other than the few days a month when I do have to alter my lifestyle the pros out weigh the cons (for me.)
Hope this helps(!)

I had 10 day periods when I was on the coil (non-hormonal). Normally they are only 3-4 days for me! Although my GP didn't rate it as a big deal, any health page on the Internet will tell you it is not normal, and a sure sign that the coil doesn't agree with you. There's a technical name for such abnormal periods... I'd give it a few cycles to see if things settle, but unless you decide you can live with the extended periods, definitely get it out.

fairydust · 31/12/2003 20:07

Well i've been on my period since the 20th december i have had to buy approx 12 packets of towels and still show no signs of finishing.

so have an appointment on fri to discuss will nurse.

Am a little worried that my fingars swelling up may have something to do with me having the coil put in.

Haven't heard of welling as a side effect, Fairydust, and believe me I did research the coil a fair bit! You don't feel feverish, do you? The new coils have an excellent safety record, really. But the persistent bleeding isn't good for anybody's health, why you should have it out if it don't settle (and that's aside from the nuisance of the so much sanitary wear).

fairydust · 04/01/2004 16:53

I'd phoned the doc's on fri and was told i'd have to wait till next thursday for a appointment.

Yestaday the bleeding and the pains were worst so i did somethig i probly shouldn't i pulled my coil out myself -

Today i am still bleeding but already it seems a little better and the stomch pains have gone.

Lisa78 · 04/01/2004 19:10

Can't believe you took it out yourself!

fairydust · 04/01/2004 22:07

fairydust · 04/01/2004 22:12

will probly get told off - but i really couldn't stand it anylonger i've been bleeding very heavy since the 20th december- i've phoned them a couple of times and been told it's just my body getting use to and that we only loose a tea cup in blood well i've lost about three dinner sets.

but feel soooooo much better today and am hardly bleeding

they talk some crap don't they - especially male doctors about females bits! I'd have thought they would want to check you when you rang, just to be on the safe side
Still cannot believe you took it out yourself, I keep wincing!
Let us know how you get on

fairydust · 04/01/2004 22:25

i think it helped that i'd had a drink - the totally sick thing was we had some friends round at the time - as i disapeared dh came looking for me -

i'd done by the time he'd arrived and was just cleaning the coil - he then ran down stairs very proud that his wife had, had her hand up her self.

Removing the coil was painless for me (traumatic having it put in, then). Don't let them take you anything less than seriously, FD. It's expensive to them if you only use the coil for 6 weeks, but taking care of your health is the purpose of their budget. I posted as Scrooge before, if you didn't realise, and I really think coils just do not agree with some women.

fairydust · 07/01/2004 15:58

feel so drained - have used 22 packets of saintary products -

got to go now post laters

Hope you're ok, Fairydust. I've had a coil - best thing about it was getting rid of it. I let the Dr do that, though! Take care.

popsycal · 07/01/2004 17:24

hope thinhs are ok fd¬!

fairydust · 07/01/2004 17:33

well the reason i've been in so much pain and bleeding so much is because my body was rejecting it - that's the reason it was so easy to pull out.

I've been given some tablets to stop the bleeding and some iron tablets as i'm anaemic now.

thanks for all your help

OP posts:
popsycal · 07/01/2004 18:49

thank goodness that it is starting to be sorted out!

suedonim · 07/01/2004 19:40

Phew, I'm glad you're on the mend!

zebra · 07/01/2004 20:00

Sheesh, FD, now I just wish we had talked you into getting it out sooner! Annoying, init? When so many people obviously get on with the coil and love it. Now you've got to make birth control decisions again, too (blech). But, c'est la vie.
