Have any of you tried treating it with methotrexate, and if so how effective is/was it?

DH on methotrexate for psoriatic arthritis .. its done his arthritis wonders but tbh his psoriasis seems to be slightly worse than it used to be on his back

all these drugs are trial and error and dependent on the individual

have you tried a gluten free diet?

CHICagoMUM · 23/03/2006 20:44

It is actually dh who has it. He has both plaque and guttate (?sp) and suffers from associated arthritis. It has got really bad recently. He saw the dermatologist yesterday who recommended either methotrexate or "biologics". (the biologics (no quite sure what they are) aren't avaliable on the nhs and our health care plan won't cover them - they will cost £10,000 a year - so that is out). The other option was for him to be treated with a biologic under trial (but with what happened last week he is unsurprisingly reluctant to be a human guinea pig). So that pretty much leaves the methotrexate, but I wondered if it is sucessful.

biologics .. enbrel / remicaide .. you won't get them on NHS though have been approved by NICE .. too expensive

DH tried sulfasalazine which was great for arthritis though gave him dermatitis (also makes you temporarily infertile)

you can't conceive if using methotrexate (shouldn't / not can't)

what else has he tried??

enbrel and remicaide well documented and widely used in US .. they're not a trial drug .. only thing is no long-term research ie over 30 years due to how new they are

have seen some wonderful case studies on the biologics .. just too damn expensive

CHICagoMUM · 23/03/2006 20:52

"what else has he tried?"

I think it is a case of you name it he has tried it.

Visits to the dead sea
Steroid creams
Dietary changes
Herbal/homeopathic lotions and potions
Various types of UV treatment with/without creams
Antibiotics
Chinese herbal medicine
Accupuncture

sounds similar .. though we never made it to the dead sea .. well not yet

I'd say its worth a trial tbh .. you need to take low dosage folic acid (on prescription only) the day after

will find some info on it . hang on a sec

gingernut · 23/03/2006 20:56

Do you know what the trial drug is? It could actually be a licensed product such as enbrel or remicaide (trials are often done on licensed products to support applications to change the wording of the licence for instance). May be worth checking - just a thought.

CHICagoMUM · 23/03/2006 20:58

He didn't say what the drug is, just it is a phase 2 trial (ie it has been tried on humans already) but I believe it isn't already licenced.

OP posts:
Twiglett · 23/03/2006 20:59

problem with taking it on trial though is if it does work .. once the trial is over .. you don't get it any more .. so back to square 1

CHICagoMUM · 23/03/2006 21:00

Plus if he did do the trial he is supposed to commit for 4 years.

The one concern I have about all of this is that we (particularly I) were hoping to have baby number 3 in the next couple of years (not ready to just yet) and therefore are concerned about the implications of these drugs.

OP posts:
gingernut · 23/03/2006 21:02

If it's Phase 2 then it isn't already licensed.

4 years Shock.

Twiglett · 23/03/2006 21:03

CHICagoMUM · 23/03/2006 23:12

We have a sun bed at home and he has been to a centre to treat it, but this time as soon as he stopped it has flared up big time.

I have terrible psoriasis on my scalp, under arm and breast and also between legs i use lots of E45 cream which helps with the itching and keeps the plagues under control i have a steroid cream which i use on the scalp it is hard to apply but does minimise the problem but i do find it very hard to cope with especially on the scalp it does stop me wanting to go out sometimes, and i always hide under a hat.
Recently saw a product called Derm-80 it is a hand held UV light wondered if anyone had tried it.

LOU38 · 31/03/2006 08:22

bump

ThisTime · 15/01/2007 22:54

I have had terrbile plaque psoriassis for 20 twenty years and was seen as a case for funding for Enbrel. It is fabulous and cleared up within 3/4 weeks, i just have to inject myself twice a week.

Im back at hospital next monday and have a feeling that they wont continue with my prescription as think you can only have it (due to expense) for a limited period.

Just waiting for it to return.......

mumof3teens · 21/01/2007 15:12

My DS1 has really dreadful psoriasis. He started with it approx 12 months ago - shortly after starting Uni. He started with a spot on his leg and it is now all over his body (including face). He is pretty fed up with it now. He finished a 6 week uv course just before Christmas, which cleared it up pretty well, but it is now back with a vengeance. I am interested in the Chinese herb remedy (or indeed any remedy) countessdracula - can you tell me more about that please?

CountessDracula · 23/01/2007 23:15

well all I can tell you mumof3teens is to go and see a reputable chinese herbal practitioner, the remedy is different for each person; they cured my lifelong eczema 15 odd year ago too!
