URGENT ADVICE NEEDED

My DS is 7 weeks old and breastfeeding every 3 hours or so, slightly less often in the night. He usually poos during or immediately after every feed but hasn't had a dirty nappy in 24 hours now, though he's weeing normally. He doesn't seem to be unwell, no temperature, not off his food or anything
Can anyone advise?

Think its normal for bfed babies. As long as when the poo comes its normal colour and consistency it's fine.

Chandra · 23/12/2003 19:38

I agree with Jimjambells, mine used to go clean sometimes for 2-3 days and then, he made-up for the time lost...

boozysoozywong · 23/12/2003 19:38

agree with JimJams,
Mine sometimes goes 60hrs without a pooh
just makesure you have overalls and a mask when he does blow

Festivefly · 23/12/2003 19:39

I might be wrong but i'm 99% sure that if there still weeing there fine, i'd get him checked tom. though at the clinic or ring the health visitor, as if you don't it will all shut. I think no temp and feeling well is all signs its not an emergency. So don't panic, perhaps just a little constipated. Its difficult when there little good luck

MincePie · 23/12/2003 19:39

Agree with Jimjams...anything up to 10 days is considered normal for a b/f baby as long as when it does arrive it is normal and if he is not in obvious discomfort in the mean time.

Be prepared though, it may be pretty hefty when it does turn up!

MincePie · 23/12/2003 19:40

Hey we're all agreeing with Jimjams

Festivefly · 23/12/2003 19:40

I don't think you need to go, just to save you worrying over christmas, get some reasurance off your hv. have you got a walk in baby clinic

Jimjambells · 23/12/2003 19:41

my god that's unusual pie Must be christmas or something

Lisa78 · 23/12/2003 19:42

Have spoken to NHS direct who said more water - they seemed more concerned that I couldn't hear any bowel sounds which I usually do when feeding him. Have got our post natal check up in the morning, so will be seeing the doctor then. Just panicking a bit cos he has gone from every feed to nothing so suddenly

MincePie · 23/12/2003 19:45

Lisa, you DON'T need to give him water, its not advisable to do so with a b/f baby. He's weeing so he's not dehydrated, just offer more breastfeeds the usual if you think he needs more liquid.

DD2 had a poo with every feed until she was 6 weeks then she only went every 3 days for a couple of weeks, now its about 3 times a day...unless you think he is unwell in other ways you don't need to panic!!!

(jimjams I'm always agreeing with you, just silently )

boozysoozywong · 23/12/2003 19:51

I don't wish to appear sychophantic but Pie and JimJams, amongst others, are right. I call NHS direct YTS direct as they are a bit dim and have no iniative..

Lisa78 · 23/12/2003 19:52

Thanks all, feel less worried now, tho DH is annoying me as he is "worried sick" - wants to take him to casualty...! Wish I hadn't told him, he is going to make me feel like bad mummy...!!!

Lisa78 · 23/12/2003 19:53

Ahh, another NHS direct devotee! Don't know why I bothered ringing them, never found them any use! Last time I rang, I found me telling them stuff - the wonders of a biology degree - was tempted to make stuff up!!! Just kidding!

Jimjambells · 23/12/2003 19:54

awww pie- thanks xxxx

Agree NHS Direct are panic merchants. I rang them once to ask about temp reduction and had to stop them calling an ambulance.

Festivefly · 23/12/2003 19:56

Did anyone see my nhs direct story?

Lisa78 · 23/12/2003 19:57

Tell me! I once rang them for numbness and tingling in my left side and had to stop them calling an ambulance. Still they panicked me enuf to go to casualty, and even faxed my local hospital that I was coming! Got there, sod all wrong with me, well bit of a virus, passed in a few days! They scared the life out of me!

Festivefly · 23/12/2003 20:01

I rang because my son stuck a raisin up his nose. They told me to ring an ambulance immediately without delay. I said i wouldn't it wasn't that serious, the nurse started saying give me the name of your doctor or health visitor. I told her everything was ok and i'd take my son to casualty but he hadn't stopped breathing or anything, so i wouldn't be in a mad rush. She was really angry and said is he not bleeding everywhere how long has the razor been up there now?

snowysam · 23/12/2003 20:01

Lisa, my DD is 7 weeks today and has done the same thing. BF babies don't have as much waste to get rid of so can go a long time between poos. DD didn't go at all over weekend and then pooed for England all day yesterday. If everything else is fine and theres a load of wet nappies he's fine!

Have a good christmas and have fun with your PN tomorrow

Lisa78 · 23/12/2003 20:03

ROFL FF!!!!!!!!!

Lisa78 · 23/12/2003 20:03

Thanks snowysam! Look forward to horrendous nappies over christmas then!!!!!

popsycal · 23/12/2003 20:08

ff - that is very funny!!!

Jimjambells · 23/12/2003 20:10

NHS direct told my friend to go to casulaty immediately as she was probably about to lose the sight in one eye. She had to get a friend over to look after her ds, take her autistic dd with her- it was a migraine........

alison222 · 23/12/2003 21:51

DD used to go for up to 6 days without a dirty nappy and then it used to all explode at once. She started off like your DS though. It was normal for her. As long as you are still getting wet nappies I wouldn't worry just yet. - My DD is now 10 months and I get a dirty nappy 2 or 3 times a day due to all the fruit and veg she eats - again now normal for her. These things do change a bit over time

mears · 23/12/2003 23:26

This might help Lisa78. Absolutely no need for water, no need for worry - totally normal.
here

Demented · 23/12/2003 23:29

My DS2 could go up to 10 days before pooing, then when he did poo it would be rolling down his legs and squirting up his back (nice ). As for the water I agree with everyone else, if you do a search for postings by Tiktok (she is a BFC and knows everything about b/feeding) she was just recently giving someone advice about giving a b/fed baby water, she says it's not necessary. HTH.
