I've namechanged because this is just so hideous

I've got worms.

I just went to the toilet and there was a worm wriggling.

I feel sick.

DD had them, I am bfing DD2 so can't take the medicine. what can I do?

I have just scrubbed myself clean, but still feel disgusting.

bleeerrrrgh!

pictish · 22/08/2012 11:17

It's very common. See your chemist or gp.

cocolepew · 22/08/2012 11:18

Get the stuff from the chemist. Ive had them before, it's not very nice

fluffyanimal · 22/08/2012 11:18

You have my sympathy, I've had them twice from the DC. The first time, i was bfing DS2. You can take Pripsen, but you have to pump and dump for about 12 hours iirc. Talk to your pharmacist or your GP about this.

Methe · 22/08/2012 11:19

You can buy the stuff over the counter in a pharmacy, it's call Ovex.

Methe · 22/08/2012 11:19

Oh just seen about bf.. As fluffy said there is something you can take.

gingeroots · 22/08/2012 11:21

no ,no ,not disgusted at all - we've all been there .

You poor thing .

Could you double check with GP about not taking while breastfeeding ?

fluffyanimal · 22/08/2012 11:24

You can take Pripsen whilst breast feeding but you have to dump your milk.
You cannot take Ovex.
As Ovex is the most popular, some pharmacies may not stock Pripsen, so get asking asap. Also, get advice as to how long you need to pump and dump for, I seem to remember it was not more than about 12 hours longest 12 hours of my life

cheddarcheeselover · 22/08/2012 11:25

can't get a gp appointment until friday, and we go away on friday!

can't get anything but the over 2s, banned when bfing stuff over the counter, so I have to put up with it till I can get a prescription on friday Sad

What I hate more about worms is the obligation to wash all bedlinen, PJs and towels and damp dust all surfaces but then I am a slattern and probably why we got worms in the first place.

cheddarcheeselover · 22/08/2012 11:27

I'm bfing a 19month old... she's nearly 2? could I take the other stuff if she's nearly old enough to have it herself?

OP posts:
fluffyanimal · 22/08/2012 11:27

Are there any other pharmacies near by that might stock Pripsen?

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 22/08/2012 11:27

Have you got a walk in centre near you? If so they will fit you in regardless.

fluffyanimal · 22/08/2012 11:29

Anyway, you'll have to get Ovex for the rest of the family - DH and any other DC. The whole family has to be treated when there is worms.

cheddarcheeselover · 22/08/2012 11:30

well our gp's is technically a walk in centre but you have to wait for HOURS. not practical with 2 small children.

Will ring round the pharmacys.

OP posts:
saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/08/2012 11:30

Does your GP have to see you to give the script? It's not like he's going to check up your bum. Sorry. Madness to have to wait for an appointment.

cheddarcheeselover · 22/08/2012 11:31

DH and DD1 have just been treated because DD had them, me and DD2 didn't take it because of the no under 2s/bfing thing.

yuck yuck yuck

cheddarcheeselover · 22/08/2012 11:34

just read this from the breast feeding network

"Mebendazole (Vermox®, Ovex®, Pripsen tablets®). Adults and children over the age of two 100mg (one tablet) with a second dose after 2 weeks if re-infection is suspected. It may be given to children under the age of 2 years but is not licensed for such use. Appendix 5 of the BNF (British National Formulary) states that the amount excreted into breastmilk is too small to be harmful although the manufacturer advises avoidance under the limitations of licensing."

tempted to just take the ovex we have in already, they don't consider it different to pripsen.

OP posts:
MousyMouse · 22/08/2012 11:35

see what netdoctor says about ovex
I think I would risk it. if there really would be a problem, there would be a big fat warning.

fluffyanimal · 22/08/2012 11:35

Sounds like you might have to treat DH and DD1 again then, or this will just go backwards and forwards, unless you can bring yourself to do the most thorough house clean and laundry load every single day. Everyone needs to be treated on the same day.

Sorry, I'm just bitter, because I'm the only one who ever notices the damn things, my DS must have a bum of steel.

droves · 22/08/2012 11:38

If you can't get it in a chemist you might get it on one of the online chemists , like chemist direct or boots.com.

I think there was a thread said senna was a treatment safe for pg women who've caught it .

Garlic ( remembers the garlic arse thread ) , grated raw carrot , cayenne pepper and cinnamon are all supposed to be toxic to worms too .

Hope it gets cleared up soon .

Smile
cheddarcheeselover · 22/08/2012 11:38

well I was assuming I could only take the under 2s stuff, which they won't give out without a prescription. looks like pripsen is over the counter and not that different to ovex though...

they were super cagy about giving us even the ovex for DD1/DH until I explained that I had actually seen a number of worms wriggling around DD1s bum

OP posts:
fluffyanimal · 22/08/2012 11:39

Can't speak for whether or not Ovex is ok for you to take, but I think that info from BFN is wrong about Pripsen, it is definitely not the same as Mebendazole, as its pharmaceutical name is Piperazine Phosphate - I have my old packet in front of me

cheddarcheeselover · 22/08/2012 11:40

we've had a major cean and have done the whole massive laundry thing... guess I'd best get started on it again.

OP posts:
BegoniaBigtoes · 22/08/2012 11:42

Oh don't worry, worms are everywhere. We've had them a couple of times and now DD is 2 we can all de-worm ourselves together - I love the fact that the medicine is called VERMOX - DP says it in a big scary alien worm type voice as he chases DS around the house with the box :o

They are horrible and disgusting but easily zapped.

Do you know what is the worst - when you have guests or visitors (or memorably once when staying in a cottage with another family) and your child goes "Oh no itchy bum! Worms! Worms!" Blush
