The only thing that ever helped with mosquito bites! is there something like this in the UK?

... I used to buy it whenever I went to the US. Band-aid anti-itch gel. It was fantastic for anything stingy or itchy. The only thing that ever ever worked for me. I would have paid anything to have some sent over, but it's been discontinued!

We're off to Gozo in a couple of weeks, and we will of course do all the stuff you're meant to do, but someone will inevitably get bitten and have a bad reaction to it. Does anyone know what actually works and I can buy here?

Also, someone told me that if you take anti-histamines for a week before going, you are less tempting, or you don't get bitten, or something like that. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Would be very very grateful for any hints and tips - thank you!

Antihistamine tablets are the only thing that ever worked for me.

Anthisan is good its a cream and available in pharmacies it works well for us and I react very badly. We also buy a mosquito plug in from Cotswold Outdoor its very very good we use it a lot although we did need to buy an EU to Uk adaptor as it was for use in Europe, we originally bought it when we lived next to a stagnant bit of the Thames.

Mosquito killer

Anthisan

faustina · 15/08/2012 07:41

.. thank you for the replies. We've tried the anthisan I think, and that didn't do it. The mosquito killer looks like a good investment, but someone does ALWAYS get bitten whatever you do to prevent it.

ThisIsNotHoneyDragon · 15/08/2012 07:56

faustina · 15/08/2012 14:01

Here.

Looks like the same stuff rebranded (same parent company as band aid). It certainly has the same active ingrediant.

iscream · 16/08/2012 13:45

faustina I liked the Bandaid anti-itch gel and phoned them to see where they sold it, as I couldn't find it anywhere. They said have quit making it. :(
I find white or cider vinegar good for bites. Some people use After-Bite, or calamine lotion.
*Haunted, you may be my new hero.

kilmuir · 16/08/2012 13:46

Fenestil gel is good, though I think i got that in Middle east

HauntedLittleLunatic · 16/08/2012 15:14

iscream.

Check the product I linked above.
It is (i think) made by the same parent company - Johnson and Johnson.
It has the same active ingredient (0.45% camphor).

The photo looks the same as the bandaid product apart from the label.

I don't think it has been discontinued just rebranded.

(sorry I should have read the whole.of your message before posting.)

swear by the Avon skin so soft original dry oil body spray. on offer at the mo too :)

BlueChampagne · 16/08/2012 16:46

I swear by After-Bite, and ammonia solution in pen form available from Boots.

Dahlen · 16/08/2012 16:48

I found the only thing that worked was a combination of antihistamine tablets and wasp-eze, which contains benzocaine so really numbs the area. THere are bound to be other, similar products with the same active ingredient.

LadyofWinterfell · 16/08/2012 16:51

DH uses Lanacane(sp?) cream as he gets bitten despite using everything possible.

Zhaghzhagh · 16/08/2012 16:53

I swear by citronella oil. You need to get it from a chemist and it's pure lemon oil (which mossies hate). Smells very lemony (so nice, but strong) and it works without any horrible chemicals.

If one does happen to get through the barrier then Tiger Balm takes the string out.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2012 16:54

Antihistamine if it swells up. Otherwise the amonia pen stuff mentioned below - stings like buggery at first but then pretty soothing. And those little gun things to zap yourself when tempted to scratch!

Zhaghzhagh · 16/08/2012 16:55

oo, Citronella oil is made from lemongrass, so there you go. It also soothes barking dogs. That alone make it worth buying and taking on holiday.

Zhaghzhagh · 16/08/2012 16:56

stops barking dogs

heroutdoors · 16/08/2012 19:10

Autan is the stuff that will prevent you from getting bitten. It is not nasty like Deet.
There is Autan for children, babies , adults etc.
Not sure if they do an after bite thingy.
But the pen mentioned above is very good.

I get PMLE (polymorphic light eruption), for itch relief the ONLY thing that works for me is Benadryl skin Allergy cream. I have 3-4 tubes of the stuff lying around the house.
That said I've been looking to buy online and everywhere says not available...

thegreylady · 16/08/2012 21:26

You can get the Benadryl from Amazon uk too.It works.

DazR · 22/08/2012 21:41

The ONLY things that stops the itch of a mozzie bite is Eurax Cream (found in most pharmacies). Both me and my daughter are allergic to mosquito bites and swell up quite dramatically when bitten. Eurax cream calms the itch and brings instant relief - it is fairly long lasting too. I don't travel far without a tube of cream in my bag!! I have also used the Avon skin-so-soft spray to ward off mozzies with fairly good results - or any 'jungle' strength repellent. I also take an anti-histamine with Loratnadine (such as Claritin) to good effect - would take it daily during an overseas holiday (just in case) but at home use it when bitten. Have also tried eating lots of marmite which is supposed to ward them off too!!.... have tried most things over the years but think Eurax is best to soothe the itch!!Smile

This - amazing! Worked a treat in Turkey last year. I react realy badly to bites and this is the best thing I have ever found.

tb · 27/08/2012 11:30

We use one of those pierre d'alun - alum stone? sticks that you get as a deoderant. It stops the itch, and has brought down the swelling from those bites that cause a hard swollen lump.
