TinyGang · 08/03/2006 18:05

Oh poor youSad. I guess if it's contageous, maybe you'd better not go in until it's ok. Did the doctor give you any advice? How did you catch it at work?

auntyquated · 08/03/2006 18:06

it comes with the territory. everyone at work knows that it is a risk...but will they want me there knowing that i know i have it?? iyswim

OP posts:
meggmoo · 08/03/2006 18:08

I wouldn't go in, what if loads of people catch it? Nightmare.

auntyquated · 08/03/2006 18:08

the GP said - "Well you probably aren't the only one who has it, so jsut go in." but what if i am the only member of staff with it???
i teach refugee and asylum seeker children and we have jsut admitted 2 large groups.

OP posts:
TinyGang · 08/03/2006 18:09

If it comes with the job, I guess every so often someone picks it up? I think I'd stay off - you might feel bad if someone else gets it.

auntyquated · 08/03/2006 18:10

radley - scabies is a louse that gets under the skin. its faeces make you itch. Shock told you...bleugh!!!

OP posts:
Radley · 08/03/2006 18:12

AQ, that must be horrible, i can't begin to imagine what it is like. What treatment are you on? How come you got it from work?

gladbag · 08/03/2006 18:12

I caught scabies a few years ago (primary teaching - don't you just love it...nits, ringworm, threadworm - the list goes on)

I was told that once I'd covered myself in the lotion overnight then it was fine to be in school (though I did have to phone my new boyfriend, now dh, who'd just been to stay for the very first romantic weekend, and tell him that he needed to see his doctor as I'd probably given him scabies Shock. Good start for a relationship)

desperateSCOUSEwife · 08/03/2006 18:14

gladbag ooh the shame you must of felt making that phonecall to your bf/now dh Blush

auntyquated · 08/03/2006 18:15

i have the lotion ready to put on tonight so maybe i will go and offer to go home again and leave my planning for someone else to follow.

TinyGang · 08/03/2006 18:19

Omg you catch something doing your job, and then you don't get paid cos you have to be off sick. What a pita for youSad

katyrocks · 08/03/2006 21:05

DP had this a couple of years ago, (also from work). He had to go in and tell everybody, but as it happened they were already aware from another emplyee. it drove him potty. GP said as its highly contagious, treat all the family and wash all bedding etc and warn all friends we'd been in contact with. its horrible, feel for you Sad. but quickly cured! Smile. make sure you do the second treatment though, good luck

auntyquated · 09/03/2006 16:33

katy - do you know when i need to do the second treatment? i can't rememebr what the GP said.

I definitely wouldn't go to work as it is very contageous.

Myself and a group of friends had a scabies scare about 4 years ago (I can laugh about it now) after a weekend away. Never came to anything but have never got an appointment so fast before or since at the doctors - went directly to Reception and told normally stern lady that I thought I had scabies. Told me to take a seat and doctor would fit me in that morningWink

gladbag · 09/03/2006 17:09

As far as I'm aware you can go to work as soon as you've done the treatment (same goes for children), so I didn't have any time off - saw GP on a Friday afternoon appointment, did the lotion thing overnight (24 hours) then into school on Monday as normal. Not sure about next day, if it's during the week though. I used Dermac something lotion, iirc, which you only have to use once (and not more than twice in a week), but I think I did it again a couple of days later, just to be sure (I was completely horrified by the way, and v itchy, so you have my complete sympathies). HTH

gladbag · 09/03/2006 17:11

Oh, and I boil washed all my sheets and towels, and washed all my clothes on the hottest cycle they would allow. HTH

amouse · 09/03/2006 17:15

i had it from work too. Gross makes you feel really nasty doesnt it surely they could come up with a better name.
I used the all over lotion overnight and washed it off the following day, just make sure everyone in your house gets treated too, plus wash all bed linen and towels the morning after you've used the lotion HTH

jellyjelly · 09/03/2006 17:34

Caught this froma veryex boyfirend after i stayed at his house, pretty gross. Has anyone said that you hace to treat your hair, both up and down to get rid. That is what the doctor said anyway and i never had to do another treatment.

auntyquated · 09/03/2006 18:23

i have been to work and everyone was fine about it, just called me Crusty all day! Grin
school nurse was in today and she jsut siad "Oh dear nevermind, pretty unavaoidable working here" Sad

i was told not to do my head/hair/ face as adults don't get it above the neck!!!!????

instructions on Derbac said ne need to hot wash linen jsut an ordinary wash would do the job.
GP said don't treat the rest of the family until symptoms appear as he thinks i have had it a while and as they don't have any symptoms it is unlikely that they will get it now??????

when you get soemthing like this there is always conflicting advice. google scabies and you will see what i mean. Sad

haven't been too itchy at work but it is beginning to get worse, i think i will take an anti-hystamine.

OP posts:
Yorkiegirl · 09/03/2006 18:28

ouch AQ. Not good!
Something I have managed to avoid in my time as a teacher!

gladbag · 09/03/2006 18:32

auntyquated Sad The night time scratching was the worse, and just to warn you, the itching didn't go away after the treatment, but was bad for a week or so after... double Sad

Googling is a two-edged sword....I remember I found lots of useful advice about scabies, and also read things and saw pictures that I really wish I hadn't.....

I didn't have 'family' at the time - was a singly - but if you do have a young family, and especially your dp/dh, they really should all be treated. I'd ignore the GP on that one. I think scabies has quite a long incubation period (3 weeks...?) so impossible to tell if they have or haven't.

Anyway, good luck Smile and I hope it all goes away very very soon.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 09/03/2006 18:54

AQ - ds2 had this and the night-time scratching went on for ages. Take that anti-histamine.

Dd was the only other one (of the 5 of us) who got it. Take care if anyone you treat has excema - despite Derbac saying that it's OK for excema dd's flared up really badly for weeks afterwards.
