have you tried

only buying wine at more than £10.00 a bottle
keeping the empty bottles where you finished them
not washing the empty glasses
waiting until after 9.00pm to open a bottle
keeping the bottle in the kitchen

can you think of some more?

zippi join the wine society that is always a good start

And go to Majestic not bloody threshers!

Carmenere · 08/03/2006 12:22

Camden Park - shiraz/petit verdot about £7 in Threshers I think. It is really really nice, it's our house wine here in casa carmenereGrin

zippitippitoes · 08/03/2006 12:23

because they ration you to a limited number of expensive bottles of wine? Grin

I am not faithful to any shop, just the drink. Majestic are graced with my custom also (and Tesco's, and Sainsburys, and M&S etc etc)!

amynnixmum · 08/03/2006 12:23

Majestic are great but you have to buy at least 12 bottles. DH and I have done this several times with the idea that the wine will last as ages......as ifGrin So we now tend to buy only what we intend to drink that night. Aldi have a surprisingly good selection of wine at very good prices.

sandyballs · 08/03/2006 12:25

Mmmm, my favourite white wine has to be a NZ Montana Sauvignon Blanc.

Red wine - any Rioja.

sandyballs · 08/03/2006 12:25

Grin moonshine. I'm the same.

anorak · 08/03/2006 12:35

Grin at this thread.

Started off to try and help people cut their wine consumption down and has morphed into tips on where to get the best wine at the best price. PMSL

Grin

I've had a look at the wine society, thank you

just wondering whether joining it and buying wine over the internet would be a good idea?

or a bad one?

OP posts:

Don't buy it!! Grin

Seriously - me and dh used to share a bottle of wine 3 or 4 times a week, and open a second on Fri or Sat night.

We agreed to stop buying alcohol as part of the weekly shop and although we missed it at first, now we don't at all.

It had become a habit and was compounding the all round feeling permanently knackered that goes with having small children.

Dh doesn't really drink alcohol at all now. I still enjoy a drink when I go out and very ocassionally at home eg if I have a bad cold a couple of stiff brandies works wonders.

expatinscotland · 08/03/2006 12:57

Good ideas. I tried them all. Still was a serious winehead. All buying more expensive wine did for me was give me a taste for expensive wine. :o

ChampagneandNappies · 08/03/2006 13:54

So this is where the other thread meandered off to - enjoy yourselves won't you!

WideWebWitch · 08/03/2006 16:54

ha ha anorak, absolutely re thread starting with tips for lushes and meandering into a discussion of where to buy, ha ha. Today I bought 3 bottles of dry white and some more Champagne (there is already some in the fridge unopened) because I might get a job offer this week (fingers crossed) and if I do I will be drinking Champagne because it will be such great news.

Hey, there you go, that's MY tip: buy Champagne and promise yourself you'll only open it if it's a special occasion. And 'it's Thursday' doesn't count as a special occasion! I've had Champagne in the fridge for over a week and haven't been remotely tempted because there hasn't been a special occasion or reason to open it.

CountessDracula · 08/03/2006 16:58

yes but then you end up doing what we did once and having a bottle because a new washing machine arrived Grin

(well you have to celebrate the patter of tiny bubbles n'est ce pas?)

moonshine · 08/03/2006 20:22

WWW - I have started cross-referencing threads in a stalker-like way and methinks I have caught you out - er, was last night a special occasion??????

WideWebWitch · 08/03/2006 20:25

No, no, last night was wine not Champagne! Honest, and I did admit to it on the 10yrs younger thread, honest I did, look, \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=2350&threadid=152638&stamp=060308202115\here!}

WideWebWitch · 08/03/2006 20:27

Oh I see, you thought I was saying on this thread that I was being virtuous this week and on the other that I wasn't?! No, no, am being crap but enjoying it v much! And have childcare and no job during the day atm so it's ok!

moonshine · 08/03/2006 20:30

Hmm, don't know if that little detail is a convincing mitigating circumstance (says she supping a lovely little Macon yet again despite promises not to indulge tonight). People in stone houses eh.....Grin

Pruni · 08/03/2006 20:31

We cut down because I worked out our weekly booze bill.
It was over £60. Blush
A bottle of beer then a glass and a half of wine each every night.
Saying that, I really fancy a drink now.

moonshine · 08/03/2006 20:31

Ah, posts crossed - yes, that was what I was thinking! Good for you (and good luck with the job).

WideWebWitch · 08/03/2006 20:32

I keep saying 'fuckit' is my problem this week. Am promising myself that when I am working again it will all change, oh yes Grin

CountessDracula · 08/03/2006 20:33

what are your jobs you are going for www?

Carmenere · 08/03/2006 20:34

Ok you lot I was going to skip the vino tonight and had a big glass of water with my dinner BUT you have inspired me and now all I have to say to you is CHEERSGrin

moonshine · 08/03/2006 20:35

And I am a f**kwit - stones houses - meant glasshouses, natch (I need another glass....)

WideWebWitch · 08/03/2006 20:35

I'm on 3rd int for one cd, fingers crossed!
