Catching a cold from a teething baby

Every time my son is teething he seems to get a cold with it but I always seem to catch it. I always thought you could only catch colds from viruses. So does this mean that when he's teething he's picking up a virus due to being run down because otherwise surely if it's not a virus then how could he possible pass it on?

My mum and dad as well as myself have managed to catch it and they always seem to be the worst colds of all.

I've had loads of colds in the past but when I get one off my DS whenever he's teething it seems to really hit us all pretty bad which is weird because i'd have thought that we'd be equiped to deal with it better than he is. Last time I got one off him I contracted a sinus infection that lasted for 3 months. This time i've had full blown flu which has now managed to manifest itself into a chest infection which I just can't shift. My DS is coughing loads also. Thank god it's his last 2 teeth as we're tired of picking up these colds and infections off him.

Is this normal?

Oops. Sorry just realised I posted this in the wrong forum. Should have been in general health.

You can't catch flu from a cold so he must have had flu or you must have vaught it from somewhere else. You also can't catch a cold from a baby who has a runny nose from teething. Afaik they dribble more because of the pain and they may be more run down so may catch a cold which they could then pass on iyswim? Dd has high temps and runny nappies etc but I never catch anything because those are teething symptoms rather than an infection if that makes sense? Also, be careful not to attribute everything to 'teething'.

Well he's been coughing really bad and waking up with a face covered in the green stuff for the last 2 weeks. He keeps trying to bite on his hand and playing with his teeth so I think his teeth are giving him trouble but it's possible that he's caught a cold.

I started with it last week as a normal cold but then 2 days later I was shivering and shaking and feeling dizzy and generally pretty bad. My dad babysat at the weekend and now he's a job to speak and his chest is really bad. This always seems to happen whenever he's teething.

Hi Oxygene,

Hope you are feeling better! Small childrens' immune systems are functionally immature, which means they are more susceptible to germs...and colds. You are not alone -- babies will have cold after cold as their immune systems mature and strengthen. To help keep you and the rest of your family healthy, remember to wash your hands before and after handling your baby. Try to avoid touching you hands to your face (or biting your nails) if at all possible. Cold bugs love to enter through the nasal passages so it is especially important to keep these critical areas protected. Best of luck!
