Debating having the Marina fitted......Anyone have/had it?

Evening all!

Well long story short, ive been suffering for a long time now from really heavy periods and mid cycle bleeding. I've had varies checks and have been given the all clear for anything nasty.

The problem is, the older I get, the heavy my periods are. I'm only 28 now, but it's getting to the point where even super extra plus AND a towel aren't lasting more than 20 minutes. So obviously it's getting the stage where i'm having to plan things around my period. Sometimes I can't leave the house for fear of accidents.

My gp keeps suggesting the Marina coil, but I really don't like the idea of pumping hormones into my body. I've only ever used condoms.

Another, albeit less concerning problem, is weight gain. I first started researching it about 6 or 7 years ago and all the reviews I read were pretty horrific. Things like "get this thing out of me!!" or "i'm put on 20lbs in a month!!".

I'd really appreciate your advice and experiences please.

Thanks for reading

Eliza, glad that the Mirena sort of helped, albeit not int the way you expected it to.

Actually, you've reminded me of my other concern. Sex drive. Did/does anyone have any problems in that department? Eliza, did you have no sex life because you were constantly spotting and therefore felt unsexy? Or did you just lose your mojo?

There was a pretty negative thread yesterday. Hang on, will go and find it

It's not perfect but nothing is. Mood changed from tears to stress with me but it doesn't mean it'll happen to you.

Some people love it some hate it, suppose you have to try it and see. Like I said you can always get it removed very easily!

cupcake78 · 18/07/2012 13:36

Oh and it did reduce my sex drive but honestly thats not a bad thing Grin

orangeflutie · 18/07/2012 13:38

I'm in the don't do it camp. I spotted continually, had cramping, tender painful breasts, bloating and felt really down on it. I lasted just over six months and like one of the other posters because of the spotting had little/no sex so pointless anyway.

Seona1973 · 18/07/2012 13:53

if you dont get on with it you can have it removed - if you dont try it you will never know if it helps or not. It really is supposed to help reduce heavy bleeding so might make a difference to your life.

I was newly (second) married then. It's a few years ago now so, no shortage of interest! But....it was just this awful "period about to start/period finishing" brown slutch. So sorry for the description but, that's how I was. All month long. And they kept telling me 'it'll settle down this "spotting'" but I gave up in the end.

orangeflutie · 18/07/2012 16:22

Yes I got told it would settle down too Eliza22 and it didn't.

MrsHoolie · 18/07/2012 21:51

I have had mine since December and my periods have completely stopped.
I have got two small children so I don't have much of a sex drive anyway (too knackered tbh!).
And relying on just condoms lowered my sex drive as I get pregnant very easily.
Even though I have only had c section deliveries the fitting wasn't painful at all.

Doilooklikeatourist · 18/07/2012 21:56

I'm on my second mirena .
Best thing I ever had .

rainbowsprite1 · 18/07/2012 22:15

I havent read the whole thread but I dont have mirena, I have the old fashioned copper coil with no hormones. I normally have v heavy periods and the 1st 3 months were horrendous (I got prescribed postan forte to reduce blood loss, OP you are probably familiar with it...) and since then it has been wonderful! If you can get past the first 12 weeks it is great!!! (note to add that ladies without heavy periods wont notice the side effects i had)

OP - have you been checked for fibroids??? also what tampons are you using? people are v v rude about tampax but i personally find their superplus better than anyone elses.. very unmumsnetty hugs.. i've been where you are and it is pants :(
