weight loss tips to move the stubborn pounds??

Hi all,

I need to lose the extra weight i seem to have gained!

ive tried eating things in moderation and cutting out snacks and fizzy drinks altogether but i gradulally end up goig back to where i started.

therefore im guessing i just need to cut it all out... including the fizzy drink!!

id like to lose 2 stone to be happy with myself completely but anythings a start as it just seems to fluctuate.

Does anybody have any ideas or tips for me?

Im a stay at home mum so i do try and keep busy so as not to pick at food but i think the evenings are the problem..and portion sizes...i dont really know the exact portions i should be putting on the plate.

Have you thought of low carb? It gets rid of all your cravings for sweet things and you just end up not overly hungry so don't snack etc.

There are a few threads in the big/slim/whatever threads about it.

Couch to 5K! (Assuming your'e able-bodied, etc). It's very gentle to start, only half an hour 3 times a week, and within a couple of months of starting I'd dropped a dress size without really changing what I ate.

These days I'm addicted to running and do it for sheer pleasure, and how it helps to clear my head Smile

All these 'low carb' fad diets are shite and do not work.

I lost two stone quickly and easily.

I just had to admit to myself that my fattness was all my fault. I ate too much of the wrong crap and did little exercise to shift it. My genetics are not to blame, my bad knee is not to blame, its my hormones/Thyroid, I hardly eat a thing!! (bollox) all shit excuses. It was all my fault. No one makes me eat chips and chocolate or drink the wrong stuff.

It is a scientific fact that if you burn more calories than you take in you CANNOT fail to lose weight.

Eat sensibly, you know what you are eating/drinking that is not good for you and fizzy drinks/alcohol are amonst the worst things you can consume.

Start exercising gently and build up. Try walking, swimming, running, rowing. DOnt sigh up for pricey gym membership. NOT WORTH IT. running on the road is free, get a second hand bike for £40 from the local paper and cycle.

balotelli Low carb diets are not faddy shite. They are scientifically proven. Have you not been watching "the men who made us fat"?. Your suggestion of cutting the crap will work to a degree because you are cutting carbs, the food you mentioned cutting were carby foods.

It is all to do with insulin. Carbs increase the amount of insulin produced to move the sugars from your blood to your cells, then insulin levels drop and your blood sugar levels drop and you get starving and crave more carbs/sweet things = viciuos circle. Low carb stabilises insulin levels so you don't get the highs and lows or cravings, no excess sugars stored as fat, body starts burning own body fat as fuel.

As for the exercise, yes it can help but lots of cadio along with a low fat diet will actually cause muscle loss as well as some fat loss. You don't want to lose muscle as muscle keeps your metabolism high. Lots of cardio can also stress the body and cause it to produce excess cortisol. Cortisol works as a fat storage hormone along side insulin.

You can lose weight with minimal effort, no hunger and tasty food by low carbing. Resistance exercise will help tone muscle to keep metabolism up (which will reduce continuously while cutting calories), the higher protein ratio of the diet helps to ensure muscle is not used by the body as an energy source whereas on low fat, low cal your body will start to use it's own muscle for it's energy requirements as it is not getting enough through the diet. You may well lose weight but will end up 'skinny fat' or another term is 'thin outside, fat inside' because your body has used muscle for energy instead of all your excess body fat. You may look slim but will probably have a higher body fat % than someone of the same height and weight who low carbs.

Low carbing is not a faddy diet at all, and there is a considerable body of evidence to support it as a healthy way of eating, going back a couple of centuries. Governments and the media seized on a dodgy bit of science back in the 50s, and decided that fat was the culprit, and so we have been advised - particularly since the 80s - to cut right down on fat. Despite a plethora of low fat foods being made available since then, and people cutting down on fat, obesity levels have soared over the same period.

Looks like low fat isn't the way to go.

Low carbing works great for me. Makes it so much easier to eat less, in fact at times I have to remind myself to eat and I actually have enough energy to move more.

There is more and more evidence that low fat, high carb is not good for us at all and I certainly couldn't go bsck to eating that way.

I am not low carbing, am following weight watchers and the weight is coming off pretty easily. I am exercising, both cardio and lots of resistance training (I see a personal trainer twice a week so getting good advice and working hard). I also go to the gym on the other 3-4 days that I don't see him. I love carbs and while I've definitely had to cut back on them i.e. smaller portions, I don't think I could be considered to be low carbing. I eat either porridge or a bagel for breakfast, have a sandwich for lunch and have either potatoes, brown rice or brown pasta with whatever else I'm having. I need the energy from carbs for exercising otherwise I wouldn't be able to move. I'm sure there are people who can exercise without eating these type of carbs but not me.

I am LCarbing and for the 1st time in years I have lost weight and so easy to maintain, my skin is better, I have more energy, my pmt has gone, along with my period pains.

Its not a fad its just back to basics, meat, fish, veg, salad, eggs, cheese, butter, no sugar, no processed food and lots of water, how can that be bad???

Wow thanks everyone amazing input!! So sounds like low carvs the way to go!

If anyone has any links on how id go about this ie. recipes and guidelines id be grateful!

I do agree that sugar coating all your habits doesnt help and we need to be honest and confront ourselves with everything we do eat and drink!

My mega issue was the fizzy drink.. I have diabetes in my family and therefore shouldnt have a high sugar intake anyway!

emma This thread has the basics on and offers lots of support. Good books to get are John Briffa 'escape the diet trap' or Gary Taubes 'why we get fat'. Both of these explain the science behind low carbing and how and why it works.
