Menopause - How old were you?

YummyHoney · 10/07/2012 19:26

I know the average age is about 52, but I can't wait to stop my periods. All post menopausal women out there, who went throught the menopause naturally (is there such a thing?). How old were you when you had your last period?

Sorry if this depresses you but I was 56. On the plus side, they do say that the circulating oestrogen you get when you still have periods is good for you (helps stop osteoporosis and wrinkles).

NUFC69 · 10/07/2012 19:31

58! I don't know if it is old wives' tales, but I had heard that the earlier you start your periods, the later they go on Shock! It was such a joy when they finished - mind you, while it's such a relief when they stop, all the other problems start.

Elibean · 10/07/2012 19:59

47 - I never minded my periods, and would happily have gone on for a few years!

My sister had her last period very young - at 40. They say mother's meno is a rough guide, but our mum was well over 50 so.....

Crap. If mother's menopause age is a rough guide, I'm stuffed. My Mum was still having periods at 60. But she had me in her 40s, so maybe that kept her periods going for longer?

TheFarSide · 10/07/2012 22:53

Bloody hell - possibly up to 10 more years of periods for me then? (I'm 50).

:(

SrirachaGirl · 10/07/2012 22:59

Interesting. I've wondered about this as I'm 35 and take the pill for PCOS (GP says I can take it until menopause). I get periods, but not "real" ones iykwim (still hate them though and can't wait for the end. Additionally, I've already experienced all the fun menopausal symptoms thanks to wonky hormones). I was a late starter (15) and my Mum was early (12) and has had endometriosis, fibroids etc. and no menopause yet (57)...I don't seem to have anything in common with her reproductive health at all. No idea what will happen to me!

57 in November and still going strong - not a hint of a menopausal symptom and when he checked my FSH earlier in the year, my GP looked at the result and advised me that he thought I was probably still fertile.

Bored with it now.

those who were late 30s, was it a surprise?
I thought that would be pretty early.

(Am late 30s, single at the moment but hoping will find a DP and have more children).

ToothbrushThief · 11/07/2012 20:02

I'd had problems with periods for ages. V frequent 21 day cycle. I also knew when I ovulated. I was TTC and had regular scans which showed that I wasn't ovulating some months but other months I was in a similar state to hyperstimulated ovaries. Several ovarian cysts... Basically my cycle wasn't cycling. Eggs were not coming nor releasing and it was muddled. I knew it was probably going to be early. I managed to conceive...miscarry then had my last child and two periods after I finished b/feeding ...and then never again.

OneLieIn · 11/07/2012 23:00

Yes, quite a surprise.

OddBoots · 11/07/2012 23:03

My mum was 62 so I fear I have many more years to go - we were both early starters too.

FiftyShadesofViper · 11/07/2012 23:07

I'm 52 and thought I was getting there as I've had 2 years of irregular periods, then nothing for 10 months. Just as I was looking forward to my year without periods and thinking this was it, they've started again!

FriedSprout · 11/07/2012 23:11

Think I am the youngest, 35!

BrigitBigKnickers · 11/07/2012 23:13

I am 47- periods stopped 3 months ago and have been thrown headlong into hot flushes and night sweats. Periods have been going a bit wonky for the last two years.

Actually Sage leaf/ soya tablets have made a big difference (thanks to the MNetter who recently suggested them.)

Don't miss my periods at all- they were painful and heavy but am a bit worried about the osteoporosis thing.

My mum was quite a bit older (around 54.)

Jakadaal · 11/07/2012 23:15

45 history of endometriosis and infertility. On long term mini pill (no periods) to help with the endo but was getting hot flushes, night sweats, memory had completely gone etc etc Went to the GP with pains in my back and he suggested it could be muscular or menopause. Blood test showed it was menopause and they started me on the miraculous thing that is HRT - feel bloody brilliant now!! Grin

BrigitBigKnickers · 11/07/2012 23:17

Am considering the benefits of HRT- what are they out of interest- I know periods resume but are they like the ones you get on the pill? (ie small and insignificant?)

Baskets45 · 11/07/2012 23:33

Pros and cons of HRT quite complex, and too late for my few brain cells - i need sleep. You could try a website like Patient UK for detailed info, and they might provide a weblink. There are a few good, reputable menopause sites. I'll have a think tomorrow if you want more answers.

crabb · 11/07/2012 23:34

I'm 54 and still going strong - although I had a 3 month break with hot flushes 2 years ago. Thought I was in the clear - ha!
