Menopause - How old were you?

I know the average age is about 52, but I can't wait to stop my periods. All post menopausal women out there, who went throught the menopause naturally (is there such a thing?). How old were you when you had your last period?

48 Menopause over now and it was trouble free. Sorry for all of you who suffer night sweats and other symptoms but for those who haven't reached this stage yet, it isn't always difficult health-wise.

Brigit- hop over to the meno forum- lots of discussion about HRT.

OP it's not always great when your periods stop- unless you take HRT you are at risk from osteoporosis, heart disease, vaginal dryness and atrophy, just to name a few.

Love your hormones while you have them!

I was 54 when mine stopped.

Thanks Carnaby Street -Everyone says that to me but I'm horrified at the thought of having periods for years to come yet (I'm 53) and every month is draining.

The last recorded age for the menopause is 58. I read this in a book on meno by an eminent gynae.

If anyone is having bleeding after mid-late 50s then you should see a dr urgently as it is more likely to be endometrial cancer. This is lning of the womb cancer. In older women they mistake the irregular bleeding for periods- It isn't.

Carnaby Shock - my Mum was a record breaker and never even knew! She was definitely 60 - I remember because in those days that was the age when women retired, and she used to joke about having periods and drawing the pension at the same time.

I don't remember if she went to the GP at the time, but knowing my mother she'd just have assumed it would stop eventually, which it did. There was no endometrial cancer - reading your post it looks like she was very lucky. She's 83 and still with us Smile. However, she did have to have a hysterectomy aged 74 because of a giant fibroid, so perhaps that could have been connected.

40 and no hot flushes or any other typical menopausal symptoms, just more frequent periods from the age of 38, then a gradual tailing off to nothing.

Took HRT for 10 years to help avoid osteoporosis. All the women in my family went through the menopause in their 30s and 40s so it wasn't a surprise to me.

Carnabystreet · 12/07/2012 21:25

Owl it's also very unusual to have a hysterect, for a fibroid at tht age. Some of my friends have fibroids and have been advised to delay surgery because the fibroids shrink after meno- they grow with oestrogen production. Fibroids can cause heavy bleeding but they don't cause more periods in later life. The danger is if your periods stop for a couple of years then continue- or you think they are- and in fact it's cancerous bleeding.

Bunbaker · 12/07/2012 22:14

51 for me.

OwlsOnStrings · 12/07/2012 22:26

There definitely must have been something weird going on, Carnaby. They found the mass using ultrasound scan (she was deaf by then so I was in with her) and there was a concern that it might be cancerous, but when they got it all out they found it was a fibroid. I suppose if she just had sort of hormonal oddness going on, the late periods and the late fibroid problem could be linked. She was mighty glad to get rid of the whole lot of it.

Hi,i am 50 and now on 2nd time of going past time for period. Now up to 12 days over. Have had odd hot flushes where i am burning up from inside out, mostly though its brain fog, totally forgetting what i was gonna say and names!!
Hoping its the start and finishes quite quickly, unfortunately my mother passed away years ago so don't really recall her goung thru similar, although i seem to remember that there was'nt too much fuss just can't recall the age she was.

swingofthings · 29/08/2018 10:10

47 and I think I'm finally there after 5 years of perimenopause. Came a bit as a shock as both my mum a d grand mother had late menopause but suits me fine the quicker I can be over that dreadful time in my life the better.

No night sweats and very mild hot flashes but dreadful insomnia, some anxiety and low moods at times and other weird symptoms. I hope it will be all over by the time I turn 50 and I can go back to being my old energetic self.

maZebraltov · 29/08/2018 18:05

Oldest woman in Guinness book of records to naturally conceive & give birth was 59yo, Dawn Brooke. Carnaby's book was out of date, I guess.

Rebecca36 · 29/08/2018 18:46

51.5 when I actually reached the menopause, ie had last period.

Cheripie64 · 29/08/2018 20:07

Started tailing off at 44, completely finished by 46, all hot flushes etc finished by 49. Not sure if it follows same as mothers, as my sister was pregnant at 47!

LightastheBreeze · 29/08/2018 22:35

45, DM was late 50’s so doesn’t always follow
