URGENT 4yr old drunk maybe quarter bottle haliborange

kizzie · 11/12/2003 17:32

One of my twins has got hold of the haliborange vitamin juice out of the fridge while I was upstairs. He spilt some but definately drank some of it (hed put it in a glass!! He could have had as much as about quarter of a bottle (250 mls bottle). I phoned a chemist and he said I needed medical advice - surgery closed so Ive rung NHS direct but they are v busy so may be while before someone calls back.
Anyone know anything about it??????

Are there any warnings on the bottle?

popsycal · 11/12/2003 17:35

ring A and E for advice??
hope he is ok,,,

kizzie · 11/12/2003 17:41

The only warning on bottle is same as with everything - keep out of reach of children. You have to store it in the fridge but Id hidden behind a few other things - never imagined hed get it out (or WANT it)
Still waiting for them to ring back.

The doctors surgery will still be open ring them, or have nhs got back to you yet

Forestfly · 11/12/2003 17:43

Go to the nhs direct website they ask the same questions and tell you what to do

SoupDragon · 11/12/2003 17:43

I've no idea - what's the normal dose for this stuff? And what are the contents?

zebra · 11/12/2003 17:43

What's in it (never heard of it?). Unless it's got a mega-dose of Vitamin A or alcohol, I kind of doubt it will have hurt him.

norma · 11/12/2003 17:45

Good idea to ring a+e. They will have a list of poisons or will be able to 'phone for ingedients. If it contains iron then I would trot off there anyway.

zebra · 11/12/2003 17:46

Look -- here's the website . Unless it's the syrup he drank, I think it still likely it won't have hurt him.

hmb · 11/12/2003 17:54

Ring A and E. But if it is just vitamin C he will pass it out in his urine.

zebra · 11/12/2003 17:55

I'm guessing it was this one ? the multivit liquid? Annoyingly claims to be suitable from one month old grrrrr... but never mind, also says 5ml daily for up to 4yo, which (not knowing your child's age) implies your child got maybe 65 ml, or 13x the usual dose.

This site says 400 mcg of Vitamin A for a child under 3 as the RDA, and your child theoretically just got 13x200 or 2600 mcg of Vitamin A. NHS-direct should be able to figure out if it's too much.

kizzie · 11/12/2003 17:59

yes zebra - its that one - thankyou - never even thought about looking at their website. Just going to put question on NHS Direct website

OP posts:
zebra · 11/12/2003 18:02

Glad I helped...
I think the Vitamin A is the only one to worry about.
I wish I could get a 2nd job just researching stuff for people, on the Internet or even in University Libraries... that would be so cool!!

popsycal · 11/12/2003 18:02

kizzie - if you are seriusly worried, please do ring a and e...
i have done this before on far more trival matters and they have bee superb

Jimjams · 11/12/2003 18:07

vitamin A in supplements isn't a problem as its always in the form of beta carotene (only exception is in fish liver oils). beta carotenes can't be toxic- your body converts what it needs in vit A and dumps the rest.

Jimjams · 11/12/2003 18:07

sorry to vitamin A not in

GeorginaA · 11/12/2003 18:10

"Storage information:Ambient"

you keep it in the fridge? confused look - shouldn't need to - ambient is room temp.

Agree with all the phone A&E-ers - you may feel a bit paranoid mummy doing so, but sometimes it pays off to be paranoid. Good luck, please let us know the outcome!

hmb · 11/12/2003 18:13

That used to be my job Zebra! I used to do that for a drug company in their medical information department. We used to get all sorts of questions. It was a great job, I loved it.

kizzie · 11/12/2003 18:13

NHS Direct site only promises to answer within 5 days so maybe wont use that at mo!
Have checked and theres no iron in it so main problem is vit a.
NHS direct have just rung back to say that a nurse should rin g within hour - tried A & E just before that but was engaged so will give it the hour but will then definately try A & E again. They must be absolutely snowed under at moment.
DS doesnt seemto have had any immediate effects - obviously just long term worry re. Vit A.

Im really annoyed at myself for buying it - normally just really on fruit/veg for their vits but theyve had such horrible colds thought they could do with a bit of a boost.

Thanks Jim Jams - the vit a is my real worry - how do you know all that?

OP posts:
kizzie · 11/12/2003 18:15

Georgina - it says on bottle to keep refrigerated after opening and use within 8 weeks???

OP posts:
GeorginaA · 11/12/2003 18:20

weird - the site definitely says ambient.

just checked the back of our bottle and you're right, it does stay store in the fridge. We never have Mind you, so does tomato ketchup and we completely ignore THAT too! (shudders at the thought of refridgerated ketchup)

Dunno - it's stored at normal room temperature in the supermarket. Strongly doubt it needs fridging. Daft manufacturers.

GeorginaA · 11/12/2003 18:56

Any news kizzie?

kizzie · 11/12/2003 19:21

NHS direct have now rung 3 times to say that a nurse will ring soon - they were all very pleasant but maybe if they spent less money on admin staff and a bit more on nurses theyd be able to answer more calls. (Just a thought)
Manged to get hold of an out of hours chemist who seemed much more aware than the other one. He said to definately speak to the nurse but that in his opinion it wasnt a major problem - said it could make feel or be a bit sick but there wasnt a risk of vitamin poisoning. So I feel a bit more at ease now - will report back later when Ive spoken to the nurse.

What a good idea contacting an out of hours chemist - I'd never have thought of that!

I did think it might not be a problem because NHS direct do tend to have strict guidelines on priorities for serious cases - I'd have hoped you'd have had an immediate ring back if he was in any serious danger.

hugs hope they call back soon and you can settle back with a bottle of wine...
